That's fantastic, Inferno, good on you and your dad too! At four to six weeks, even if Mum doesn't come back, they should be able to handle wet kitten food and this is a good time to get them used to people and handling. Bless you guys for caring!

My dad took one to the vet this morning and she told them they're 4-6 weeks old. I guess that since I haven't dealt with kittens for over 20 years that it's hard to guess their age. She said they look healthy and told us what we should feed them to make sure they're ok in case their mother has left.

They are crying for food and their mother. If they are only one week old, they will not be crying when their mother is with them. They would be in a huddle nursing on her when she is there and sleeping when she leaves them to find food. Their mother would not let them crawl out to see you when she is there. You also need to be careful about going to see them if you want the mama to accept them back, looking at them is fine but if you handle them each time and they start to smell odd to her (ie of human), she may well either move them or abandon them. It might be an idea to ring your local vet or shelter and explain the circumstances, they might have the best advice. A no-kill shelter is best if you can find one, otherwise if the shelter cannot find a foster parent, they will be put down but that is kinder than letting them starve or freeze or wild animals get them. I hope that they are older than you think and that mama is indeed there and leaves them only to hunt. Please try and keep a watch out for her, and it would be kind to leave out more food for her by the deck, that way she doesn't have to leave them long to find food.

If Mama doesn't come back, and you can't take them on, it would be kindest to take them to a vet or a shelter and give them a chance, if they can find someone to foster them. Please don't leave them crying out there if you know mama isn't coming home.

It was Saturday evening that he saw that happen. I'm afraid that feeding them every two to three hours is impossible for us since we all work so maybe we just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best. We are interested in taking one in once it's old enough.

Well, it does sound like she might be under the deck but how long ago was it that your brother in law saw that? Afraid it sounds like you'll have to make a judgement call on this one. You could try putting them in a box with a warm jumper or something right by the deck, so they won't freeze even if mama doesn't come back, and checking again tomorrow. That's if you don't have wild animals, dogs or male un-neutered cats around who might pose a danger to the kittens. One to two week old kittens need to be fed every two to three hours, day and night, so you would be taking on a commitment.

I think they're maybe a week or two old. Old enough that they can focus on us and follow someone walking away. We only discovered them under the deck yesterday morning. We have our suspicion on who the mother might be but haven't seen her for a few days. She does hang around our yard looking for any scraps but as soon as she sees us she'll run away. My brother-in-law did say that when he was leaving he saw another stray cat crawl in the hole and then heard a hiss and that same cat came running out of the hole so maybe she is under the deck. My dad did leave some food out there for her and it's now gone but any stray cat could have ate it.

Like I said, they don't look like they're starving but it's the crying and trying to find a nipple to feed off of when we hold them that's alarming. There's no way for us to look under the deck to see if the mother is there either.

Tent Test and Pedialyte:
Tent test: pick up a good pinch of kitten's skin at the neck and let go.If it snaps back immediately, she's hydrated okay. If it takes a little time to go back down, or, worse, it stays up in a 'tent' shape, she needs fluids, such as pedialyte (from the supermarket, children's aisle) or home-made pedialyte below.

Note, in the United Kingdom, pedialyte is called Dioralyte. Also known as rehydration salts.

Home-made pedialyte:
Pedialyte:

* Pedialyte formula (from World Health Organization)...no preservatives so short life-span
* 1 cup water (boiled then cooled)
* 2 tsp sugar
* 1/8 tsp salt
* 1/8 tsp baking soda
* (this Pedialyte formula gives needed electrolytes & some sugar for energy)

Combine all ingredients and warm slightly.
Make new after 24 hours.

Yes, it is normal, baby kittens, like human babies, cry for attention and want to feed but it is worrying that you haven't seen the mother.

How long have you been looking for the mother, and how old do you think the kittens are? Now that you have handled them, I am afraid even if the mother does come back, she may not stay, although you could try putting them back and keeping a close eye out for the mother as their odds of survival always increase greatly if they are feeding off mum. She would normally wean them for up to about six to eight weeks. (On the down side, if she is feral, she will also teach them to fear humans so if she does seem completely hostile, terrified and feral, they may be better off with you.)

However, it sounds like it might be up to you, I'm afraid. Depending on how old they are, you could try KMR or canned goats milk (available in the baking dept of Walmart) or KMR drizzled over a little soft wet food. CLick on the pink tag orphans on the top right for much previous good advice on how to look after orphaned kittens and also check out these websites, they tell you everything you need to know. If you cannot get to the store for a while, they also have various recipes for kitten glop which will do until you can get KMR.
Here are the kitten sites:

http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm
http://www.kittenrescue.org/pages.php?pageid=15
http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/orphans.shtml
http://www.feralcat.com/raising.html

A blog with photos on hand-raising:
http://feral-kitten-rescue.blogspot.com/2008/10/feral-kitten-how-to-story.html

Some links for recipes for glop:
http://www.hdw-inc.com/glop.htm

Also try the tent test, it won't tell you if they're starving but it will tell you if they need fluids, either pedialyte from the children's aisle of your supermarket or home-made pedialyte (I'll give you the recipe).

If they are cold, their digestive systems can't work so you will need to warm them up before you start trying to get food down them. Good luck! But if there's any chance Mum's still around, they are safer with her, especially if they are under six weeks.

Hello,

We recently found three kittens living under our deck. All three look and feel healthy and have enough strength to crawl out of the hole we have in the deck but cry a lot and when we hold them they look for someplace to feed. Is this normal behavior for newborn kittens especially when around humans or are they possibly starving? We have yet to see the mother and are worried that she's abandoned them or even possibly died or can't produce milk.

I only just noticed the post of Lynn's site above and would like to say it is a very lovely site. Thoughtful, caring and precise. Thanks for sharing it with us Lynn as there's much need for sites to ease the pain of our pet losses. So many people today don't understand how truly devastating it is to some of us to lose a pet. I can only say they aren't pet people.

This is great, I love seeing everyone's avatar without having to click on their name. Right now I have Miss Nibs (aka Nabby). I will have to rotate the other girls in since my chances of getting all three of them into the same picture are pretty slim. Nibs is the last of my outdoor rescues (Nora and Gem came from other homes). Nibs showed up shortly after my Gibbie went to the Bridge, 6 years ago. She resembles my favorite breed (Maine Coon) in every way, so I call her my "designer knockoff". She is by far the sweetest cat I have ever lived with. She is about 7 years old.

Hey this is a good idea. I seem to be doing everything bass acwards so this is a good post to respond to.

I am new and came through some wonderful member who read an article I wrote. It's taken me a couple of weeks to kind of feel my way around this site but I think I am starting to get it and tonight I managed to get my own avatar in place.

My avatar is my beautiful Bijou whom I lost at 17 years of age last January. I have launched a website to honor her and to help others who are grieving. I found although there were many sites online, I couldn't find one which met my needs when I lost her and went looking for information on Dealing with Grief. I hope you will visit my site if you have lost a pet but even if you haven't there is a lot of good information, advice and some of my writing (mostly about cats) I also have a Hero Hall of Fame and maybe you will know of someone you would like to nominate.

Thank you for having me here.

This is Lady. She belonged to a family that lived in my mom's apartment complex. When they moved, they abandoned Lady to whatever might happen. Mom had already been feeding her every now and then, so just increased the frequency. When Mom moved, I went back to the complex for one last load. Lady came running up saying "here I am!! Don't leave me!" When I moved in with Mom seven years ago, Lady took to me and has been my shadow ever since. Mom will glare at her from time to time and say "You ungrateful thing! I rescued you, I took you to the spa, and who do you love? Her!" :D
