all I can say is that 6 months later, we are on the final steps of our cats bonding.. it dosnt matter if it is a momma cat or not. cats are territorial. rarely, can you just stick 2 cats together and expect them to get along. it is a process that can take any ware from a couple of wks to a few months. you want to introduce them slowly. start whare the cats spend a few days - wks in separate rooms whare they can only smell each other. once the hissing and growling stops, make it so they can see each other but not chase each other (child's gate separating cats when you are there, door shut when you are not). once they stop hissing and growling at each other you are ready to put them together in the same room when you are home. they will have some fights, but you don't want to get in the middle unless someone pees, poops, or causes blood during the meeting. once you catch them grooming each other or sleeping together, then they are ready to live together unsupervised. it takes time, but with patients, MOST cats learn to like or love each other. you can do it!

Oh. No. Not. Again.

I don't think I can handle more new-cat aggression, more new-cat confinement, more splitting of my home and family. Brother's relatives called the kitty "sweet" when I asked about her temperament because I wanted as smooth a transition as possible. Particularly with my back being injured again and having to undergo a semi-surgical procedure on Monday, I don't know if I can deal with cats who don't get along and with keeping them separated for weeks, particularly with no second human to pay attention to one set of cats while I'm dealing with the other.

After she was spayed, the doctor told me that she was "not as far along" as she had thought, but confirmed that the kitty was "in the earliest stages of pregnancy." I know they diagnose that in humans via blood and urine tests, but how do they know that with kitties if there aren't any kittens there? I was wondering what would have happened to her if she had been with bro's relatives when she was found to be pregnant, then decided I didn't have to wonder. They'd probably have put her out to wander the trailer park some more.

I'm getting her for real tomorrow. This is Friday, and I'll pick her up Saturday morning.

As for names, EC, I can't use "Tiger Lily" because it's already been used. She and her brother Chappel, who was my first cat, were my "soul-mate kitties." I got to spend three times as much of my life with Tig as with Chappel, who died at 6 of FeLV (right before the vaccine became available). I have considered, though,

Tigrita
Tigra
Tigressa
Tigrace
Tigracia
Tigrella
Tigretta

and decided I would probably end up calling her "Tige" or "Tigey" as a nickname. I want to keep the "tiger" sound in it because the humans with whom she lived said she recognizes the name.

Any other feminine variations on "Tiger" would be welcome.

Congrats, Leeny. Mom cats certainly need a good home after all the kittens go. My Lucy lived in a pretty depressing place for two years waiting for a home after her kittens got adopted. Yay that your girl had a shorter wait. (How about Tiger Lilly?...just an idea.)

From what I have read (I don't have personal experience with this), "momma" cats rarely "get along" with other cats because all the hormones surging...they have a natural "hissiness" toward other cats to protect their own kittens. I say this just to suggest that you may want to keep "momma" in seclusion for a couple of weeks before letting her slowly meet your other girls. That will give the hormones a chance to settle down and give her time to adjust to not having kittens to protect any more. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in too.

Good luck. She is such a lucky girl!!

My brother's relatives have placed all the kittens but one (see "The cat who needs me" thread). They intend to keep that kitten and--rehome--the momcat. I went to meet the momcat last Sunday afternoon. Although the atmosphere in the home was less than congenial by my standards, no spontaneous combustion occurred (also see the earlier thread). I held her briefly twice before she squirmed to get down. The levels of sound and activity in the house really weren't conducive to a calm introduction. Anyway, on Tuesday afternoon my brother took her, at my request, to his vet; she had to be cleared for any communicable diseases and free of parasites before coming into my home and getting around my girls. She was to spend last night at the clinic, come home today, and have her spa day next week.

Things changed a little, though, and I don't feel entirely good about it. Monday evening the relative called my brother and mentioned that the kitty had been outside since giving birth, so she could be pregnant again. So, we added evaluation for pregnancy to the list of things to be done for her. They used ultrasound to look at her uterus, and the doctor said that, from the shape and "texture" of it (she must have palpated it, too), it seemed that the kitty probably was pregnant again. They did not detect any kittens, or any kitten heartbeats, on the ultrasound, though. The diagnosis of probable pregnancy was based soley on the appearance of the uterus. They gave me the choice to spay now or wait for a litter to be born and spay after that. I had been wondering how I was going to handle kitten birth, pediatric spays and neuters before allowing any kittens to leave my home, and placement in homes during the height of "kitten season," particularly with my new medical problem (more about that on another thread). After several moments of struggle, I told them to go on and spay her. So, as I type, my new little girl is having her spa treatment.

If they had detected kittens, though, my decision would have been different. I would have dealt with caring for a feline family and looking for forever homes.

She has to stay overnight tonight, and I will go pick her up in the morning if I can. This has been my second day off from work with a URI that I suspect my therapist gave me last week. I feel better today than I did yesterday, though, so that should go smoothly. If it doesn't, though, I'll call in the payment to the vet and ask my brother if he'll bring the kitty to me; tomorrow's his day off. The vet said that the kitty is around 2 years old, basing the estimate on the condition of her teeth. She has all her adult teeth and they show some "wear." Some of the tiny front teeth are missing, but the vet says that shouldn't give her any problems.

So I will really meet my little girl tomorrow. My brother's relatives have been calling her "Tiger," but to me that's a boy's name. I've been considering calling her "Tigey" in memory of the deceased kitty from the discontinued web comic strip "The Mows," but I'm not really sure about it. The Tigey in the strip was a boy, anyway. Someone said on the other thread that the kitty who came to me might be unexpected and come under circumstances I would not have predicted, and that's certainly been true. I just hope she heals well from her spay and that she and her sisters welcome each other.

Leeny, I'm certain that the kitty who needs you will come along, quite possibly when you least expect it. The kitty may not take the form you imagined, he or she may not be the size, age, color, gender, or condition that you want or expect. But the kitty who will whisper to your heart will find you, sooner or later.

Since Gabie's death, I've been wanting to get a third cat. My attempts at doing so haven't worked out. There was Bryson's biting incident. My brother has a relative with a cat who had 7 kittens, but that situation is starting to seem dodgy. For one thing, it turns out that momcat wasn't pregnant when she was taken in. For another, my brother refuses to arrange a time for me to meet the kittens. I got a weird phone call from him on Friday. He said that, if I ever entered the house where the kittens are, it would "start a fire" and that he would be the one who'd get burned. That makes no sense to me, and he refused to elaborate further as I questioned him. I saw this relative once, at my mother's funeral, and he assures me that she has nothing against me. More than that, he won't tell. He's telling his relative that, if any kittens are left on March 9 (their two-month birthday), I'll adopt two. I emphasized to him that I would have to meet them before deciding on bringing them into my family. I even did that with Gabie.

I remember the look Gabie gave me when I arrived to meet him. He gazed up at me, his eyes saying, "Where have you been? I've been waiting for you!" It was obvious from that first moment that Gabie was meant to be mine. I want to give a home to another cat who needs me, who is meant to be part of my family. I keep thinking about The Stray Cat's Prayer and wishing that kitty would come to me!

I can't even look at the municipal pound's web site any more. Along with the impound dates, they've started posting the "time up" dates and noting which cats have no applications (none of them did as of my last visit). I can't stand that. I can't save them all. I can't risk being coerced into taking a cat and having things turn out the way they did with Bry. Last time I went to the humane society shelter, no one connected with me. One cat I was considering even leaped back out of my arms into the kennel when I picked her up.

If there is a cat out there who needs me, who is meant to be mine, I pray that we will be guided to each other.

Leeny that is wonderful news. Bless your brother for giving Bryson a home that he deserves.
Maybe Aunt Leeny will be able to go for some Bryson cuddles once he is all settled into his new home.
