I'm so sorry to hear that your little kitty didn't make it. Unfortunately, there's a very high mortality rate for outdoor kittens between about 3-12 weeks of age. Sometimes there are problems with their digestive tracts; other times there are congenital birth defects that cause a very short lifespan.

I know you must be heartbroken. But you did your best, and the kitten was treated with kindness and love in its all-too-short life. There are SO many kittens who never know human kindness.

When you're ready, I'm sure another kitten who needs a good home will come into your life. I wish I could give you Otto and Ellis as classroom kittens! I'm fostering them, but homes have not yet been found for them. They're disabled brothers who have a very mild case of cerebellar hypoplasia. It means they don't jump or walk quite as well as other kitties, that's all. But their case is so mild that it hardly slows them down at all!

You are all the most wonderful support group I have ever known. I wish I had found you all when I lost Cujo, (By the way his name was always funny to everyone since he was the most loving and lazy cat ever). My 8 year old daughter has taken it really hard. She has learned a really tough lesson on losing loved ones in the last few months. I also dread having to tell my other 98 kids today. I teach 8th grade and my students have been very excited about the kitty. We were all looking for ideas for a name for him, so I had to give daily reports on what he was doing to help generate ideas. Thank you for every kind word and I will let you know when we decide the time is right for another baby. The lady who rescued him has about 15 more, some as young as 1 week old with their mother. So I know that when the time is right there are lots of babies that need someone to love them like we will.

What you did for your little one was exactly right, ML James, you kept your baby from getting dehydrated with the electrolytes and you gave him yummy chicken baby food to tempt his wee appetite, and you got him prompt medical attention. I don't think the shots or worming would have had anything to do with it.

Sometimes as many as 20% to 40% of kittens don't make it past 12 weeks and no one knows why -- that's why it's called fading kitten syndrome, but it may have something to do with how much food the mama got during pregnancy, how the pregnancy developed, problems during birth -- none of which you could have changed. It is heartbreaking but think how much worse that little kitten's short life would have been without you. He knew love and fun and comfort and warmth right up until his last day -- for that little one, it was, sadly, a short life but a very good one with his loving mum!

I think Instinct has a good suggestion -- maybe, if and when you are ready to let a new little one into your heart, look at an older kitten or cat. If having a small kitten is important to you, you can always add another little one to the brood later (two furbutts keep each other occupied very nicely!). {{{HUGS}}}

You didn't do anything wrong MLJames, and in fact you did everything that you could. Sometimes things work out this way and there is nothing that anyone can change about it no matter how much we would like to.

I doubt the shots and the worming had anything to do with it.

Give yourself some time to mourn, and when you are ready just remember that there are lots of older cats that need homes too in case you are worried about getting a kitten and having it get sick on you.

I had never heard of bobcat fever either, until Cujo got sick. He was mainly an indoor cat, but he would go out in the yard and flower garden with me. It only took 1 tick. I am going to wait awhile before I get another kitten, I had a hard time deciding to get this one. But I have done some looking on the net and realize that there are so many things a kitten can get. He may have had problems that no-one knew about. He had been found in a park about 2 weeks ago and he was really underweight. He ate well, but wasn't seeming to fill out any. He had been given his first shots and wormed before I got him, does anyone think that maybe that could have had something to do with it? I am really trying to not blame myself. I keep thinking that maybe if I had done something different. He had loose stools from the beginning, but I though it was just new home, and food. He was playful and active until the last day.

Oh no. That's terrible. Of course you're heartbroken, and so soon after your last little furbaby. I'm so sorry, ML James. My heart goes out to you; you did all you could and you were taking such good care of him, there must have been something wrong that no one knew about. {{{HUGS}}}

I've never heard of Bobcat fever before but I see that it is becoming more common. Gosh,hopefully you'll be able to get another older kitten in better health. Wait a little while though in case what your other kitten had was contagious to other cats. I'm sorry.

I wanted to thank you all for the help. Kitty got worse yesterday and I called the woman who had rescued him, she works at the vet clinic. She said I was right to be worried and she came and got him to take to the clinic for some treatment. He was doing better after she broke the fever and the diarrhea had stopped. I was going to go get him after school today, but she called right before to let me know he didn't make it. They are not sure what was wrong, but I am so heart broken. We lost our long time baby, Cujo, this summer. He was 6 years. He had what they refer to as "Bobcat Fever" tick disease.

Definitely get him to the vet. Keep his condition stable in the meantime; not too warm, not too cold. Keep track of what's being consumed, approx. quantities, and what's coming out. And be ready to describe typical behavior, and how current behavior is so thoroughly different from the norm.

Good luck!

Hi MLJames and welcome. It sounds like you are taking good care of your baby,the only thing I would add is some unflavored pedialyte. You can get it at any drug store,it only costs a few dollars. Add it to some of the chicken baby food to flavor it and see if he'll drink it. He should be old enough to maintain his own temperature but have something warm in his bed too and keep an eye on him tonight. Please let us know how the vet visit goes tomorrow and how both of you are. [[Hugs]]

There's a good chance he's got an URI. When I adopted Milo, he had one, as well. He slept a lot, had a fever, hardly ate and had diarreah as well. I took him to the vet and after a week on Clavamox and some pills for the diarreah, he was just fine.
Definitely take the baby to the vet!

Others will have better advice when they log on, I'm sure, but for now, sounds to me like you're doing everything right. Just make sure he stays warm, on a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or snuggled up to your body or in a blankie, he might have trouble regulating his temp if he's sick, and keep on giving him the electrolytes and warmed chicken baby food, if he will take it. Poor wee baby, let us know how it goes at the vet.

I just got a new kitten a week ago. He is about 8 weeks old and had been rescued. He has been a hand- full, However he had had loose stools for the last few days. I thought it was from new home and new food, but he has became very lethargic today. I am taking him to vet in the morning and giving him electrolytes and chicken baby food. I just am so scared for him (and me). Is there any thing else I should do? He feels warm also.
