I'm fretting along with you Vicki..my prayers are with you..Tues, the 12th will be 2 weeks we've been missing our dear sweet Mama Meezer whom I fear the worst because she was so happy here with us and the family of ferals that came with her. We had just completed the spaying and neutering of them all and had just settled down to a routine of caring and feeding for them when allof a sudden she was gone. After a long summer of becoming a well mannered, loving and appreciative part of our family she just up and disappeared. Of course I pray that somehow she will still show up home...and can very much relate to the cold, sinking feeling you are experiencing at not knowing where your baby is. Never give up hope for her though...miracles do happen...and I'm expecting my own as well as yours....Faith!!!!!!

Vicki - Please don't give up hope! What the others have said about checking garages, sheds, basements, etc. is so true! Cats have an uncanny ability to slip unnoticed into places and it is so easy to lock them in. A friend's cat went missing for several days until one day she heard a meow coming from a van parked on the street. She went over and saw this very sad kitty face staring back at her from the van window. Sending you loads of positive energy and lots of hugs.

Angela,

Thanks for the advise. We did buy a leash and a harness and my husband thinks we're nuts! We live in a rural area and I worry about bald eagles....we have lots and owls....we also have lots of those. We have a golden retriever that aboslutely adores her and follows her around when she is outside but that just makes her easier to see, for which I am grateful because with the leaves on the ground it is easy for her to hide!

Lot's of fun and certainly lots of learning, both for us and for Tia!

Vicki, that's just gut-wrenching!!I know from personal experince. When I 1st moved out to the NW from Mass. in 1990 I moved into my brother's old trailerhome in the San Juan Island's in '95 and was given a gray-striped 7yr.old tabby who culdn't be trapped by his owner,my brother's girlfriend at the time, when she was moving back to Boston. He promptly ran away, came back 6 days later, stuck around for a few more, ran away again, came back for 48 hours, then finally ran away for good!!. :( I think he just was too independant and never could acclimate to having a stranger(me) in his old house.

Lynn,
When I get a new kitten or move to a new house, I always do a ritual of "beating the bounds": carry the kitty around the edges of the yard, showing it where its turf ends. I repeat this over several weeks, eventually switching to a leash, then finally move to supervised unleashed outdoor breaks, timed to insure there's an incentive to come back indoors -- it's getting cold and/or it's dinnertime, for example.
It has always worked for me. I hope it does for you.

And I sure hope Vicki is just busy cuddling a safely returned Autumn...

Yes, do check others' garages, basements, etc. When I was a teenager my Persian cat Puff (my mom let her go outside when she wanted) disappeared. We were devastated. Even my stern father would stay up nights looking for her. 10 days later my next door neighbor found her in their basement. She was dehydrated and hungry, but recovered.

One of my "lost" cats turned out to be the cherished pet of a little old lady down the street. That darn cat just loved turning up on doorsteps and looking pathetic. Finally all of us on the block became aware of the situation, and when Wilbur appeared, we would simply tuck him under our arms and take him back to his mama.

Vicki,
Take heart and persist: most "lost" cats are not far away. I have lost and found many cats over many years -- in fact, I was just thinking the other day that I've only ever truly lost one I couldn't find again, and that was the very first one back in 1971, when I couldn't keep searching because I moved away. It could take as long as a week or ten days, but keep looking.

Post signs everywhere, with a picture if possible and a 48 point headline. Go out LATE at night, around 4 am, and LISTEN. Don't just call her name -- talk cat. Don't feel foolish about it, just meow, with a questioning lilt. Use a flashlight, as suggested. Think like a cat: where would she feel safe? Ask neighbors to triple check garages, basements and sheds. Cehck your own enclosed spaces. Watch other animals in the area -- again and again, I've had neighborhood cats lead me to a lost cat, or vice versa. Enlist kids in the area.

But most of all: keep looking, keep listening. She wants to come home. Every bit of effort you put into it makes it more likely that she will. I'm rooting for you to find each other. Please keep us posted. We're out there with you in spirit.

Oh Vicki, I am sorry Autumn has wandered off. Sylvester did that to me one night. Thankfully he got hungry and came back seven hours later, plus I don't he went farther than the back yard off in the trees because he had residue from the trees on his fur.

Vicki, you and Autumn are in my thoughts & prayers for her safe return. Ms. B disappeared for 3 days when she was just a little thing and came running home late one night when I was outside shaking a treat can and calling for her. She was scared as heck for quite awhile and would not go outside for love or money. So I hope that Autumn does the same and returns, scared but safe.

The big, blonde ape wants to compensate by getting me another kitten. What he doesn't quite understand is that I love Tommy and Autumn as if they were my children. Autumn's not just an interchangeable kitten -- she's my baby. Even if one day I actually do have children, my cats will still have a special place in my heart, and I will teach whoever I bring into the world that animals are wonderful creatures and our job on Earth, other than glorifying our Savior, is to take care of His Earth and His creatures. Unfortunately, it appears that children learn how to treat animals from people they admire (yes, I have to bring up that detestable Michael Vick). That is not to say that my boyfriend is cruel to animals; he loves animals, but as he grew up in a different time from me, when animal welfare was not talked about so much, he was just absentminded when he let Autumn out to play with Tommy.

Do put out flyers, though, and keep checking with the local animal shelters. And tell your boyfriend that indoor cats are perfectly happy as long as they have enough stimulation. Hope she shows up soon.
