Coconut! That's an adorable name. Treether, isn't it funny how our priorities change with a kitten? Everyone here cheers and do happy dances when kittens poop! Way to go Coconut, you are catching on!

I had Deuter from 10 days--his mother was killed. I would use the cotton ball and then put him in the litterbox. It took about a week and he seemed to get the hang of it. I would still have to put him in the box, but I didn't always have to use a cotton ball. Now he is 11 months old and is my litterbox fling the litter everywhere cat. A 16 pound cat at that! Maybe Coconut could have a similiar routine for a day, and then it might stick that she is supposed to use the box. I am glad you are here sharing your pictures--she really is a cutie!

WOW! You all are sooo nice! My new baby's name it Coconut, and my other two are Milli and Lucki. I am feeding her dry kitten food and offering it moistened and dry. Also, I gave her some canned food. I don't mind cleaning up accidents, I am just worried about this behavior becoming a habit. (she has only done it once). Thanks so much for the nice welcome! Franki

Welcome to TDK. What are you feeding the kitten? I wondered if it was a food that produces a harder stool and that is why she may be having a problem. With my kitten I used a large cotton ball in warm water and gently wiped his rear to get him to go--same thing you have already read in an earlier post.

You avitar is so cute! Enjoy your beautiful baby!

Franki, welcome to TDK! I tend to adopt older cats, so kittens that young are unfamiliar territory to me, but I KNOW there are alot of people on this site that can answer all your questions and give good advice! Good luck!

Franki, it could be also that your baby is so young, seven weeks is very little, they usually stay with Mama for another week which helps them get all the "facts" of life straight. Also as Whistl said, baby is so little in such a big new space, it may be overwhelming her and she is probably picking up on your excitement and concern. What is her name?

HI Piknarf! Congrats on the new kitty.

I've always found it useful to isolate a new kitten for a few days to a week in a single small room (a spare bedroom or the bathroom). It helps calm them to have a smaller area to master (moving to a new space can be a huge deal for most cats), and keeps the accidents down to a smaller space. Makes it easier to learn where the food, water and litter box are. Don't move things too quickly.

After the kitten is comfortable, then just open the door and let them explore at their own pace. First for about a half hour or hour, then gradually more time, until they are free to run about with the other cats.

I'm sure someone with more experience with small kittens will give you better advice on how to help them poop more regularly. I think I've read about wiping their butt with a warm washcloth to encourage bowel movements (simulates their mother licking their hind quarters for the same reason).

Bring up the issue with your vet too.

Hi Franki and welcome to TDK. We have many knowledgeable members here (I'm not one of them) who will be able to help you soon!! Sounds like you have a wonderful furry family for your other kitties to accept the new kitten so quickly. Do you have any pictures of your kitties?? Do they have a Catster page??

Hi! My name is Franki and I just got a new 7 week old kitten(two nights ago). I already have two older cats and they seem to not mind her when she is allowed out. I am going to be taking her to the vet for her first check up next week but in the meantime I think she is having trouble pooping, but I am not sure. She has been using the liter box to pee and pooped once yesterday when I was at work. Last evening she was very gasy(pewwy) and in the middle of the night I woke up to her crying and there was poop coming out of her butt. I got her to the box in time, but she hasn't pooped since. It seemed like she just couldn't find it in time. I have had kittens and cats all my life and never had a cat who didn't immediately use their litter box. I am hoping that I am just being a worry wart and that this was a one time incident. I really appreciate any help! Thanks! Franki
