I have to say the past few days have been good. Now today I was rudely awakened by a sharp pain behind my left eye! I have developed a horrible headache and I want to dig my eyeball out with a spoon. It hurts so bad. I was just beginning to think that I "didn't need surgery". Right! Like the steroids were going to be a long term cure-all. The nausea is coming back as well. Darn! :(

Molly it sounds like everything is falling into place for you! As the others haven mentioned, don't worry about the steroids and weight gain if they're helping. Once you're past this, you can tackle the weight, now isn't the time!

OMG MC...I agree...you are such an inspiration!! Seems everything is falling into place for your surgery. What a relief. The ticket is a bummer, but, you'll have a good reason not to be in court. As for the steroids...for awhile,I was having to get steroid shots directly into my head (sounds awful when they're done close to the eardrums) for my Alopecia. It was the only thing that stopped the hair from falling out. So,I know there are some good points to it. I don't know of weight gain tho, because I've never been able to put any weight on this skinny-a** of mine if my life depended on it. lol
Please know that you deserve each & every Prayer & good thought ever given you. Your such an inspiration with your upbeat attitude,& I would give just about anything to have that same attitude.

All of that is good news, MollyCat. Is the surgery still that same date? And don't worry about the steroids making you hungry. Eat several small meals, like six but small, throughout the day. That should help.

IT'S OFFICIAL! I got word from the surgeon that my insurance has given the green light for surgery. Yay, I think! LOL They have even approved 7 days of inpatient hospitalization (including ICU), maybe I will get to stay longer than two days! They have set up my pre-op testing though they said I may not need anymore tests as I have had so many recently and don't want to re-charge me for them. I also got the contact for the surgeon's nurse practioner (NP)who will set me up with a financial counselor to help with the bill (upwards of 1/2 million!!!-that is before insurance pays) as well as setting up home health. I have to say they are on the ball as they get this all taken care of BEFORE I ever go in. I talk with the NP on May 1 to settle anything that needs settling before I get in the hospital. I feel relieved to have that behind me. The nurse laughed at me when I asked if I needed to do a "prep" before surgery. I said, you know, Golytely to clean out my bowels. She said "of course NOT, we aren't operating on your butt!" We both had a hearty laugh after that! Still nervous though. 27 days til "D-day"! In case you are wondering, the steroids really seem to be helping with the nausea and vomiting. BUT I am soooooooo hungry! :)

That's great about the co-worker's daughter. Can her mother bring her over a couple of nights or a weekend cay before your surgery? It would be great if she was introduced to your kitties early. And it might make both her and her mum more comfortable if they learn the layout of your home before you actually need them.

Well, technically speaking *glances around to make certain no insurance type are listening*, HHC agencies have to document that the patient is home bound status and cannot get out for care. Which, I always considered to be an exercise in creative writing! It can be done. He just has to write the order to where your insurance will accept it. In other words, he must write the order so that a skilled nursing intervention is required. IE, sterile dressing change; blood draw; patient instruction. That's why it is creative writing!

I already told him I will be needing home care services, at least from a nurse. I had one after my digestive tract surgery in 2001. They came in twice a week which helped with my wounds and of course with making sure I was ok. I used to do home health for about a year but people seemed to never be home or want to do anything.......I think therapy is far different from being a nurse in that respect.

MollyCat, first of all *kicks the tires of policeman* well, that just bites. Now, second of all. Steroids do cause weight gain. But you know, there are times when nothing but steroids will work. And so what is more important? Right!!!!! Getting better! So just forget, for now, the weight gain. That can be dealt with later. Yes, you will have to be mindful of that the rest of your life. But for right now - not so much. One step at a time.

Your nausea is caused by a different source than just "plain ole run of the mill nausea". Your nausea and vomiting is, in my nursing opinion, being caused by abnormal intercranial pressures and stimulus of the medulla, which is the portion of the brain that controls nausea. And so, you can't control your nausea with diet. The cause is completely different.

Your longer term care is going to require some home health care. Please don't forget to speak to your doctor about that. Having been a home health care nurse, I can tell you that you will more than qualify. That's one reason why you have insurance - to pay in this sort of instance. But, you will probably have to remind your doctor of the need for home care.

And you know - there's always us!

Well, the doc says that I should be in the hospital for two days. One in ICU and one on the surgical floor. I haven't anyone (family) here to look in on the girls if, GOD FORBID, something goes astray. I am thinking of leaving a key to my house at work with someone trustworthy to look in on the girls if I have to stay longer. I am working all the angles here and might have someone to check in on me as needed. A coworker lives close by and said she could have her daughter take the bus here and stay with me after school and she could come pick her up after work. I know, hard to believe this but the girl is 14 and it was HER IDEA! I have met her a few times and she is so mature for 14. She loves cats (long story but one of her friends hung her cat as a joke) and would love to help out, even if just with Betty and Wilma. She could do her homework here and help with small housechores. I would pay her a small amount (as I won't be working it won't be much) for her help. I think someone from work could surely take me to and from doc appts. Far from that, I am still talking with people from work for help. One guy's wife runs the youth ministry at the church a few blocks away and he said I could always call her if I need her during the day. As the head, she can get away, especially if it is an emergency. As for food, well, I am praying to lose some weight during all this. Yes, I have lost over 100lbs but I have started to gain some back. That is one thing the neurosurgeon said, the rest of my life I have to be hyper-vigilent about everything that goes into my body. The smallest weight gain would be bad on my brain and pressures in my brain. I will always be at a much higher risk for stroke. I hope to start the second half of my life after surgery a much happier healthier person. Who knows? ONE of these good looking men has GOT TO WANT TO HELP! LOL Sorry so long CM! I would love nurse's Maddie and Abbie if they aren't too busy then.......:D

MC, that sucks about the ticket, but good for you for facing this with such a great attitude and courage!!!
I have a question that I am sure we all want to know...Do you have someone to help you and your kitties while you are recovering? Who will take care of you?
