I grew up in a small town in Illinois, so it just seemed natural to me to know a lot of how small towns work. But I realized that there were people reading the book who had no idea what it was like in a small town or during that time when things could change so quickly. When I moved to Iowa to a small town, I realized that small towns had something special no matter where they are. I have lived in a city of over 2 million. This could only happen in a small town. In a big city there are just too many people. This one small impoverished town needed uplifting and Dewey did it. Big cities are a bit more impersonal merely because of the sheer number of people. Small towns have an ability to know other because of the limited number. Both have their perks and disadvantages. I think they are what you make of them. What makes Spencer so special is the fact that people actually knew each other. Small town America is still the most resilient and the people are strong. Just look at what is going on in North Dakota with the flooding. Everyone pitches in because it is their home and they are proud.</p> <p>The people of Spencer were beaten, but by no means out.
