It turned to fear when I was attacked by one and it's taken some time to keep from feeling panicky when I see a large dog. However, I met a police dog who licked my leg and stayed at my side. I was shocked at my reaction; the licking of the leg didn't gross me out at all and I was completely at ease. I think it helped ease the fear, just that one dog's actions. My husband was in the Middle East being shot at. My daughter was far to young to know about my health issues. My parents live in other states. I didn't know many people in this new place. I was on my own and scared to death. After my daughter was put to bed when I didn't know what the next day would bring I could cry and Sox was there with his little self cuddling and purring. If I had only known how deathly ill he was. His death broke my heart. When my Grandpa was in one the facility encouraged us to bring pets in. The humane society would bring in pets to and one day grandpa really fell for one of the dogs. Well, Mr. WWM and I don't have two legged children. Our kitties have always been our babies. They have been there through the good and through the bad. They have never failed to love us, even when we aren't particularly lovable. We never think of them, any of them, as "pets". They simply are a part of us and a part of our lives. Without them this house would seem so cold. Those that have gone on I still miss. But I know that I will see their sweet faces again.</p> <p>I will tell you a story of when I was a hospice nurse. I had a patient, an elderly lady who developed a secondary brain cancer. Her family would become impatient with her - maybe because they just didn't understand how cancer can change a person. One day my patient simply decided to go to bed and stay there. And she retreated into herself. She was lost to everyone and responded only to painful stimuli. Her family was being torn apart by this person in the bed who no longer seemed to know them, or to care about them. One day I saw in a catalog a plush, stuffed kitty. It had a battery pack in its tummy and you could program it to make different sounds like a purr, a heart beat, soft breathing. I hit up some local organizations to donate the money to buy the kitty. When it came, I showed it to the family. They were beyond skeptical. They thought it was stupid. They knew that I had just thrown away a great deal of money. But I thought differently. I put that kitty in her hospital bed, snuggled up in the curve of her arm and turned the sound to a purr. For a while she just lay there like always. But then - a miracle. She smiled. And then she laughed. And then she reached for the kitty and began to stroke it and croon to it.</p> <p>The love of an animal - live or only alive in our imagination.
