SMM, here is some additional info on the "Litterworks System" a video. I have also seen kits that you can buy to make your own, I think on Amazon.

http://www.litterworks.com/index.php?cPath=30

I have multiple cats & only have to take the bag out once per week, so I would imagine for just 2 cats you would have to empty yours a lot less. I also buy the bags in 3 pack, and I only have to purchase them about 3 times a year. My boogerman is very particular about his box & won't use anything else!!

BMM, What a great idea! I will check out both items when I have some cash available. Those plastic recepticles are expensive and with two cats they only last about four days as they fill up way too fast. A box of 12 is running around $22! Ouch! I know about putting plastic bags in the recepticals but I like your setup better, BMM.

KW, I have a littermaid & I really like it. Being that I have a multiple cat household I bought a stand for mine from Amazon, which does away with the small plastic litter recepticles.

SMM, your formula for litter box cleaner sounds good. Just don't use amonia. I generally will use a handful of clorox wipes and then give it a spray with the hose outside, but since you are in an apartment that wont work. I always line my boxes with newspaper under the plastic bag and that helps a lot with clean-up.

I can't answer on the automated litter box thingies as I have the old fashioned gotta scoop them myself kind. Speaking of which.....heading home to scoop!

Hi all,

I wanted to see an update on how the Litter Robot is working for those who have gotten one. I am purchasing a LM920 from a guy who is selling it for $20 to me. I cannot afford a Litter Robot right now but may consider in the future. One thing is it doesn't look big enough for a cat of Sylvester's size so I am wondering if anyone who has a big kitty (16 lbs or more) that doesn't have any problems with the Litter Robot.

Also, what is best to clean out a litter box? I use to just use soap and water but I am thinking either something like 1/3rd clorox to 2/3rd water. Suggestions, please. Thank you.

I was interested in the Cat Genie when I first saw it, but Sheba doesn't seem to like anything but the original litter pans. I bought the Breeze system for my bathroom (in my bedroom) because I didn't want litter dust---she used it for several weeks then stopped--none of the others will use it either. The main boxes are in the laundry room, but I am afraid my husband will accidentally close the door so they can't get to them so I am keeping the Breeze out too.

I have had the Littermaid for a while now, and it works for our two cats and frequent foster kittens. I love it! We don't have the super high end one, just the Littermaid Elite, and I have never bought new containers for it. I use plastic grocery bags to line the plastic boxes, and I duct tape around the top inside and outside of the plastic box so that the plastic doesn't tear. Lasts forever! Also, you can buy "activated carbon" from ebay in big quantities, and I tie that into little sachets to use in the litter container instead of their expensive carbon packets. It's a huge savings, and we go through far less litter because of the littermaid. Our cats love it, too!

Clementine used to have an attitude problem where if the litterbox wasn't totally pristine, she wouldn't cover up her poop. Well, in a small apt., this is a problem! So she'd go in there and make the biggest, stinkiest pile of poo you can imagine and then leave it, as a protest! As soon as we'd scoop the litterbox, she'd stop doing it. It got our attention, all right! Now, she never does this. They love the Littermaid. I got mine at a resale store, new in the box, for $10, but if it broke now I'd buy a new one because of the money we save on litter.

KW, I've used LitterMaid. When I had only 2 cats, it worked well; but increasing numbers of cats meant the poor machine got overloaded and wore out/jammed frequently.

My next automatic litterbox purchase will be a Cat Genie. It appears to be the most sanitary, cat-friendly, and maintenance-free solution. I've got room for it in my upstairs bathroom; if that works well, I'll be one VERY happy camper.

I have used Litter Maid since 1995. You can reuse the waste containers by pulling them out and emptying them (when they tear replace them). I also keep a 5 in putty knife, 4 in cheap paintbrush, dustpan and a regular flat edge spatula shaped litter scoop. When ever the pan needs extra attention, I add scraping and sifting to my routine. Each emptying of the collection box includes brushing up the scatter from the litter flinger.

I have the Litter Maid Ultra Elite, supposed to be the top of the line when I bought it. I purchased bags to fit the container from ebay--a lot cheaper than throwing away the container every time. I couldn't count on the Litter Maid to always work--many times I came home from work and the error light was flashing--the rake gets stuck if the litter isn't kept flat--means if you have a digger that piles the litter close to the rake it won't work. For my 3 I had one extra regular litter box because Sheba refused to use the Litter Maid. I don't use it now since it's too big for the laundry room in my apartment now.

With just my two permanent kitties, it will make it a whole week between emptying the bag. When we had one foster kitten (total of three cats using it), I had to empty about every 5 days. It's no big deal though, you just pull out the drawer, swap the full bag for an empty one, and top off the litter if needed. It has a special setting to be able to pour litter through openings from the top, but I just simply use a repurposed food scoop to add litter through the entry hole. I haven't looked into the ways to extend the capacity, but I'll have to see what people have come up with! I'm about to get a batch of four foster kittens, so we will be adding to the number of cat boxes again temporarily!

I have the Littermaid and it rocks! I have Betty and Wilma so of course I have two kitties. It goes thru so little litter it is amazing. It scoops up 10 mins after they go potty and puts it in the little container on the end. It is super easy for cleanup and really keeps smell down. The nice thing is it does take batteries so if the power goes out we are still ok! I love it cause it is very low maintence. I also have a non electric box in the basement in case they get "stuck" down there and don't make it back upstairs just in time! I prefer the electric one for cleaning big time!

Great feedback, CG! Thank you!

I noticed that the website offered less expensive refurbished models. There are other websites that contain reviews. It seems that some people have been very creative about modifications that increase the waste storage capacity.

How many cats do you have? Hubby would prefer to get down to one self-cleaning litter box for our three cats. The rule of thumb for non-self-cleaning boxes is one per cat plus one. That is a lot of boxes to clean! lol
