I've been wearing one for about a year. It helps -- I was causing damage to my teeth and causing pain too. I wear it anytime I might fall asleep. Elizabeth

DM, I have worn one every night for the last 20 years. I am on my third one. I don't grind, I clench and had to go to using the hard kind because I evenutally bite through the soft kind. I cannot sleep without it. If I try I usually end up biting my toungue when I slkeep and that is a very rude awakening! It also has the advantage that is can stop some people from snoring. Another advantage is that once it is fitted it acts like a retainer and your teeth don't shift. I hope your insurance will pay for some of it.

WWM he most likely has no idea when he takes it out. I'm not ever aware of it untill I wake up and have to search around the bed to find it, usually ends up under my pillow for some reason. I'm sure that if I did wear it every night and was able to keep it in all night that it would actually help me.

Good luck with the jaw DM, hopefully your dentist can help you out and hopefully you're able to keep yours in all night :)

Ama, that's what Mr. WWM does, too - takes it out in the middle of the night. I have found that thing in the oddest places. Of course, Willow and Windi think that anything laying on a nightstand is a toy so that could explain part of it! He really doesn't even know that he takes it out, I don't think.

I have that problem too DM. I have TMJ and it is painful. I have a guard made by my dentist that I am supposed to wear at night. I tend to take it out in my sleep in the middle of the night though so I'm not sure how long it stays in or how much good it does. It does seem to help a little. I go through spurts where I'll wear it diligently for a week or so and then I give up but then the pain always gets me to try it again. Many nights and mornings I wake up with my jaw locked and I have to move it around to get it to open again but then it just pops ever time I open it.
I was getting my TMJ treated by a chiropractor for a while and that too seemed to help, I just haven't been back in a years because of money.

LOL! My dentist says he will guarantee the fit, or keep trying until he gets it right. A request is in with the insurance company now, cause Lord knows I can't afford the $525. price tag for it. YIKES!

DW, Mr. WWM is supposed to wear one. "Supposed to" being the operative words. But he doesn't wear it very often because it bothers him. The dentist said that he grinds his teeth (Mr. WWM, not the dentist). I told him that I'll bet it just doesn't fit right and that's why it is bothering him. But men... will he go and have it checked? Fat chance!

Hey guys,

Anyone have to use a night mouth guard to help from grinding your teeth? I have apparently screwed up my jaw BIG time and have to be fitted with one. Do they help really? Anytime I open my mouth, jaw is dislocating then re-alligning. Hurts like HE**!!!! Any thoughts?

DM
