Fluids is the most important thing... That vet that charged the $100 should have done subcutaneous fluids for you! Since the kitten was chilled in the rain, keeping it warm is very important - a sling to carry the baby around has been used by some... you can use an old sheet or a large dishtowel - the thinner cotton kind - that way the kitten will feel you breathing and even hear/feel your heartbeat. It is also important when you feed baby to NOT feed her on her back - but with her on her tummy as much as possible, as if nursing off mommacat. You are a great person to try so hard for this little one - the more pedialyte/formula you can get in the better, as often as she will take it. Good luck and do keep us posted. IS there a rescue group you can go to tomorrow and see if they can help you out - their staff probably can do and show you how to do sub-q fluids... HUGS to you, your friend and your baby!

Jcat gave some great advice! Please take her to a regular vet soon, she may need a bit of sub-q fluids to perk her up.
Keep checking in, lots of folks will be online after the weekend. I'm thinking happy thoughts for the little one.

Amanda, your mum gave you exactly the right advice, the best thing to do is to try to get wee Carmela to take as much pedialyte as she can (without choking, obviously) and mixing it with her KMR is the right way to go. I am not very impressed with the vet you went to, did they inject her with a fluids bubble? That would have been the least they could have done and they should have showed you how to do it at home too, as that would keep the cost down. If you think she's getting too weak, you can try smearing a little Nutrical paste, from the pet shop, or Karo corn syrup along her mouth and gums, nothing too much, not a big blob she could choke on or anything, but it's high energy and it might give her a little strength to keep fighting.

Also kittens this young can't regulate their own body temp, especially when sick, so it's very important to keep her warm. If you can wrap her up and hold her close to your own body heat, that will both keep her warm and comfort her, but you can also put her in a box with a heat pad or hot water bottle, wrapped in a towel, leaving enough room in the box so she can crawl off the pad if she gets too hot.

You can test for dehydration by doing the 'tent' test, pick up a fold of her skin and let go. If it snaps back, she is hydrated but if it takes time to go back down (if it stays up like a tent) then she is dehydrated. The tent test is described in more detail in the sites I'll give you at the end of this.

(Just a note but I'm sure you already know, as you have been taking such good care of her, that little kittens also need to be stimulated to pee as usually their mum would do this by licking their little bottoms. You can do this by gently wiping their little bottoms in a circular motion with a warm damp washcloth. It may sound odd to say this when her problem is dehydration but as you are trying to get as many fluids into her as possible, just want to make sure they come out again at some stage...) The sites also talk about this. There is also a poop guide in one of them, but I've had a quick look and it only mentions yellow diarrhoea, not green.

Useful websites: http://www.kittenrescue.org/pages.php?pageid=15

Please keep us posted, we will all be pulling for your little Carmela. Kittens this age are very fragile, especially stray or feral kittens, and she does sound very weak so you may need to be prepared, but you never know, sometimes the little ones that seem the weakest pull through. Good luck! keep checking back for more posts from some of our very knowledgeable TDK members and just keep your baby warm and comfy. Bless you for taking care of her!

hey everyone my names amanda and i am really concerned about my new kitten. first off my mother called me 3 days ago to tell me that she found an adorable kitten in her backyard squished between some wooden boards. she said she went to go see what the sound was in the backyard was for the past two days because its been raining like crazy in florida and she just shrugged off the sounds as a bird when in fact it was my kitten carmela (or carmelo if its a boy were not sure yet). well i since my mother is allergic i thought it would be a great idea that i take care of the little thing. shes about 3 weeks old and her mother abbandoned her because of the rain. at first as soon as i held her she started meowing like "mommy there you are where have you been feed me" and i fell in love with her right then. well its only been a couple of days and shes been doing great until this morning. me and my girlfriend have been feeding her regularly every 2-3 hours a day but this morning when she fed her carmela all of a sudden stopped moving. she was breathing and her heart was beating but her limbs wouldnt move on their own. in a crying panic me and my girlfriend brought her to the vet and since its mimorial day (cant spell so excuse the typos) barely any of the vet hospitals are open except one. they finally got to see her which cost $100 just to look at her (outragious) and they said her vitals are fine except she has a bit of green diarreah and she was very dehydrated. they wanted to keep her over night for an extra $400 and i dont have any money so i had to bring her home and see if i could take care of her. my mother suggested that i put unflavored pedialite in her milk for kittens (dry powdered kind) to get her rehydrated. shes been moving a bit around but the worst part is that she hasnt meowed ALL DAY LONG. and i miss her adorable little voice. my question is if anyone can give me some advice to what i should do to help this little guy or girl out? i am also now feeding her every hour switching between the nonflavored pedialite and the pedialite with milk and just praying to the goddess that she gets better. (oh and one more thing about the vet is that just after checking her vitals is that they actually suggested that i put the little kitten down and if you saw her youd give your right arm for this kitten to get better i know i would. thank you to everyone that replys and can you all please pray for carmela to get better. thank you again.
