If I ever caught them doing wrong they got in plenty of trouble for it. There are too many parents who look the other way or say "You must have the wrong kid, mine would never do that". I was a stay at home mom - believe me it wasn't easy, financially, but both of my boys now say (and they are in their early 20's) that while they didn't appreciate the constant supervision then, they appreciate it now. Kids need constant supervision and guidance, more so now than when I was a kid - I am in my early 50's. It was a whole different world then. My brothers and I ran wild during the day, but we had neighbors who were more than willing to spank our butts if Mom wasn't there to do so. Very scary. I hope they find him soon. But the fact is, these people should not have been letting their cats outdoors, because there are a million terrible things that can happen to an unattended cat. The lady who had Tommy says in the article that this happened when the family was inside the house sleeping?! So not only was the cat allowed outside in the yard alone (cats climb fences, and she GOT this cat because he was left outside to roam in the first place, by previous owners)...But what is worse, is the cat was outside at night? I would never let my cats outside, just as I would not let a child do things like play with matches, because it is not safe, and we as adults have to supervise our dependents. Infact, a few years ago, the Humane Society and the ASPCA began to urge people never to let their cats outdoors alone, even for the famous "five minutes." These agencies say that a cat who is allowed outdoors lives an average of 5 years, and has higher vet bills. And an indoor-only cat lives an average of 15 or more years, and has way lower vet bills. Just the fact that a cat outdoors can get Leukemia or FIV, or get attacked by another animal, or poisoned or taken to the kill shelter by people who don't want them on their property, should be enough to teach people to keep their cats safely indoors. 99% of the cats that I have rescued, spent hundreds of dollars to take to the vet, and then paid additional time and money to advertise to find an adoptive home, have come from my backyard and were previously owned by someone else, because they were all friendly. I would never place a cat with anyone who says they will let that pet have outdoor access.
