If you can put some sort of gating up where the kits can look at each other and chat a bit, that will help keep them bonded while preventing mating.

We had problems :-(

I booked our Male kitten in Marley to be spayed, turns out he was 'too young' when he arrived. I told the receptionist over the phone he was only 17weeks as i thought he might have been a tad young. but she said he would be fine to go through with the operation.
The vets examined him, as they thought he looked 'too small' and they discovered only one of his testicals had dropped. So they said we have to wait another 4 weeks to see if it drops, if not he might need a majour op!! So fingers crossed!

Only problem now is, we still carnt let our two kittens play together incase he tries mating with her :-(

We have to wait 10days before we can book Mia (female) in to be neutered.
So basically it hasnt gone too well. Just praying Marley will develope
soon. :-)
Mia will be booked in ASAP. I hate keeping them apart!

Many many years ago I got Fluffy, she was 4 months old, 2 months later I got Shelly only 2 months old, Fluffy couldn't even look at her, it was the same scenario, it got to a point where in my head only I would think that I wanted to return Shelly, it was really bad, but after a few months they were best friends, they would sleep together and play together and do everything together.
So don't worry, just be patient and love them both a lot. They will get along, they are just tiny and will learn.

Thanks Emma,

I have Marley booked in for this Friday morning. Keeping the two of them apart untill a week after the operation (as we've been warned to)
We plan to get Mia done also soon.

Thanks for the advice.

I just feel sorry that I have to take Marleys Man Hood away from him. lol
Mia is such a beautiful looking cat, it would be ashame to not let her have a litter in the future.
I guess we will have to wait and see.

Thanks again : )

It's not a moment too soon. Haul the lad into the vet's and get him defrosted. And get Mia done, too. Time is of the essence, and they are already mating.

And if you don't move fast......!

Thanks 'Marnet'
I'm a little worried now because I know a pregnant young kitten can suffer internal damages.
Is it too soon to get Marley book in for this weekend do you think?
I know he isnt 5 months yet and that was the recommended age by our vetanarian.

Or do you think it would be easier to get Mia done first..? I remember reading up that a female kitten who has been spayed can still get pregnant up 2 6 weeks after the operation. Is this correct??

Or should I get them both done near enough around the same time? Will this stop the chances of Mia getting pregnant if Marley has been spayed?

Sorry for the 21 question. lol

Oh yes, if they are that age and already trying to mate, then Mia can get pregnant! You need either to get him neutered immediately or her spayed. The sooner you neuter Marley, the less likely he is to develop the habit of territorial scent spraying to mark territory. And the sooner Mia is spayed, the less likely she is to go into heat. If she goes into heat, be sure to keep them separated at all times until they are neutered and spayed or Mia will almost certainly get pregnant.

Hello everyone.

Just to let you all know, Mia and Marley are NOW getting along great. The two of them fight and chase each other untill they eventually tire themselves out. One will cry when they carnt find the other. They are inseparable.

I just need some answers to a quick quiry ...
Marley (Male) will be 17weeks old this Friday.
Mia (Female) will be 20weeks old this Saturday.

Last night we noticed Marley trying to MATE with Mia. We managed to split the two kittens up after about 1-2 seconds. We plan to get both kittens spayed so they can not have kittens. We understand female kittens can become pregnant at the age of five months (Which Mia will be this Friday) but on the other hand, Marley isnt 5 months for another 3 weeks.
Is their a chance Mia can become pregnant by Marley this soon??

We are at the vets this Friday with Marley for his 2nd injection..so we plan to get atleast one of the kittens booked in to be spayed.

Just bascially want some information..as i'm worried Mia will get pregnant at such a young age (which we deffinatly dont want)

Thank you all.

Hi Lucy. You'll find that every morning U.S. time someone starts a discussion thread that has cafe in the thread title. It's more or less a virtual morning koffee klatch gathering with folks popping in for a short while to say good morning, trade a bit of news about what is going on in their day, and such. Any one person may not stay for long but joining in whenever you have the time is a good way to begin to meet and get acquainted with many of the TDK members.

Also, almost every night U.S. time someone will start that day's night shift thread. The thread title always includes either night shift of NS in abbreviation. Like the morning/daytime cafe thread, the night shift is the daily evening/nightime chat of the day's events, etc. Again, it is a great place to become acquainted with TDK folks.

Some people manage to post regulary to both the cafe and night shift threads. Others typically only post in one or the other, depending on their personal schedule.

There are folks on TDK from England, the U.S., New Zealand, and Australia as well as a few from other countries such as Egypt, so not everyone typically reads or posts at the same time of day.

Right now in what is the wee hours of the early morning nighttime in most of the U.S. is when things are typically quietest on TDK. In about another 3 to 4 hours the morning cafe thread will typically start and that is a great time to mention there you need help with a question on whatever thread you have created to ask for help with your kittens.

I know that right now you are concerned about Mia being sick. Be sure to "bump" that thread to the top of the board about the same time you post to the cafe thread asking folks to check that other thread.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Hello everyone,

I thought you would all be glad to know, that Mia and Marley seem to be getting along better over the past couple of days. We have been gradually introducing them each day (except today because Mia has been sick and had diarrhea) =(
so we have been nursing her and kept her well away from Marley. They seem to be getting on great.. chasing each other and hardly no Hissing. Marley seems to chase her more and when she reacts he lies on his back??
But we carnt be more happy to see slight improvment :-)

Girls, thanks for the advice on 'breeding' me and my partner have been discussing it and are more aware of the problems it may cause. We wouldnt want to put that kind of stress to Mia's body at such a young age, so therefor have decided to get Marley castrated. This way we can keep Mia free to develope and discuss with our vet breeding her in the future =) (we shall see)

so thanks for all your comments.

'catfancier' please show me pictures of your little one when you get her/him. Mia in my avvie is half siamese half birman. She is beatifull. Everyone who comes comments on her beauty

And one other thing to consider: a lot of times the personality of the momcat changes after the first litter. They can get MUCH more aggressive after they have kittens.

Hi Lucy. Welcome to TDK. Right now it's the middle of the wee early morning night hours here on the western side of the Atlantic puddle but in about three hours there will be lots more folks awake and online. And some of our TDKers from Down Under will be checking in at what is the end of their work day. So be patient and lots more folks will come online to help. Just keep this thread bumped for them to see.

As to how to put up a profile pic, sorry, I haven't a clue! Others can help with that.

SPA visit is our polite way of mentioning the trip to the vet for a cat to be spayed, if female, and neutered, if male.

Some of VERY important things to consider before breeding Mia and Marley:

* Breeding Mia too young will be damaging to her health; she will be physically mature enough to get pregnant and bear kittens months before she is fully grown; it's rather like having a very young teenager get pregnant long before physically and emotionally mature

* With that in mind, how do you plan to avoid them breeding until they are older; trust me, they both can and will do the intimate kitty tango by the time they are no more than about 5 months old

* Have you thought through a valid plan for finding their offspring homes? No matter how appealing it is to have kittens from these two, it would not be fair to the kittens if you are not sure you can provide good, loving, safe, well provided for homes for each kitten, no matter how big the litter. I know a cat of ours we had when I was a child had a litter of 7 kittens!

* If you have trouble finding homes for all the kittens from the at least one litter you hope to breed, what is your back-up plan? Are you willing to keep some or all of them if need be? Do you have room? Can you afford the expense? Do you have both the time and will to keep up with all the extra cleaning and work keeping house with that many more cats?

* Are there any legal restrictions in your community regarding being an animal breeder?

* Have you spoken with your veterinarian about your breeding plans? Do you have a good relationship with him/her? Can you afford the expense of extra vet bills related to breeding a litter of kittens and giving them and/or Mia any needed vet care?

* Even with Mia there to be the mom cat caring for her brood once she is a momma cat, realize that often a first time momma cat needs help feeding her kittens; young momma cats often don't make enough milk and the kittens must be given supplemental feedings by bottle every few hours around the clock; and I do mean every few hours -- two to four hours apart -- around the clock day and night. Will you be able to do that?

I'm not trying to tell you not to breed Mia and Marley. But I do highly urge you to think through all such aspects first and to do so quite quite soon, as you will need either to have Mia and Marley spayed/neutered soon or keep them separated until they are truly ready to breed. And, trust me, a female cat in heat is loud and cranky and miserable. And an un-neutered male will start scent marking spraying your home. And that is nasty smelling. And once he starts spraying he will keep it up even if you later have him neutered.

I realize I'm sounding very dire and negative. I don't mean to be. But my family went through this years ago when I was young with some cats we had. We didn't know much about proper cat care yet at that time and learned some of these lessons the hard way, both for us and the cats!

Hi, Lucy. Most of the US TDKers are asleep right now but they'll be logging in again in a couple of hours.

Check out this thread: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/18023 to find out how to put your kitties up as your avatar.

A 'spa' visit is what we call going to the v-e-t! Especially for neutering and spaying.

Ahhhmm -- I assume when you say you want to breed from Mia and Marley at least once, you don't mean with each other, but with other pedigrees? That's going to be hard to manage, if these two are living together and not desexed then as soon as they are sexually adult, they will mate and you are liable to find yourselves with a litter of Birman/British cross kittens. You will probably not even find out about it until Mia is irrefutably pregnant. I would have a chat to your vet about this.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing them on your avatar!

Thanks for all the advice my fellow cat lovers!
i deffenatly have some new things to try out.

GREAT advice about putting Mia back in the bedroom for atleast an hour a day whilst putting Marley in another room. We are going to try that.
And the plug in thats ment to calm down cats/kittens sounds like a good plan. I shall ask my vet next time i take Marley for his 2nd injection.

oo and Mia (Female) was 14 weeks on saturday, Marley (male) was 12 weeks on friday. So he is a tad younger! We are hopfully going to breed them both atleast once. Mia is stunning and will produce an excellent litter, Marley has got strange features which make him stand out. He is fluffy cream with pink nose and paw pads! LOVELY!

Can you please explain the SPA visit??

Thanks everyone for taking the time to give me advice :-)

and pleaseeeeeeeee...will someone tell me how to put my kittens as my profile pic? lol x

Juicy, welcome to TDK! Great to have another Brit poster, we are few, but growing in number!!

You've already got very good advice on the different personalities of the two breeds, but here's my two penny worth : play more with Mia, she seems to be extremely energetic, and much like a disruptive child, needs attention and to be stimulated (worn out!). I can also recommend Feliway, it's a plug in difuser available from most good vets here in the UK - it's a synthetic feline hormone that calms stressful atmospheres, and it's really good. Finally, don't despair, they will get on in time, it sounds like Mia is asserting herself as top cat, Marley will just have to accept it! When we first introduced Eric into our family, Pickle absolutely hated him. It took a good few weeks, plenty of patience and mountains of tuna, but now you wouldn't believe it to see them together - they're best buddies!

Anyway, that's more than two penny worth. Look forward to chatting with you! :o)

Mia 14 wks = just over 3 months. You did not give an age for Marley. Also you have not mentioned if they are "fixed". Exposure to whole cats of the opposite sex can trigger pre-mature maturation in cats and a 4-5 month old female is ready for what we call the SPA visit.
Just like teenagers when it hits so does the acting out.

If Mia seems to be put out because Marley has 'her' bedroom, let them trade places for a while each day. That way they get more used to each others scent and Mia realizes that there's nothing special going on in her room.

"Bossy boots"!!!!!! I love that! And it describes the Siamese side of any cat to a T. My tiny Siamese, Daisy, weighed roughly five pounds but the entire house was firmly held under her small sable paw. That's just how they are.

I have two cats, Rotley (a small, beautiful, clever Bombay) and Ruggles (a big goofy Maine Coon/Manx mix). At first, Rotley was delighted with the idea of a little brother, until he realized that Ruggles at five months was almost the size of Rotley at eight months.

Then Ruggles started growing.

And Rotley promptly fell out of love with Ruggles.

Now? They are two furbros, alternately chasing each other throughout the house, facing off like gunslingers, rolling up and down the stairs, etc.

However, they both have claws -- Ruggie's are huge scimitars, and Rotley is no slouch in the claw department either -- but THEY NEVER DRAW BLOOD. It is not uncommon to see Rots stroll past with a mouth full of Ruggie-fur, but there is never any real injury.

And they sleep together every night, curled up around each other, next to me.

The peace process is never over, and it has taken a couple of years, but it will work out.

I think if anything happened to Ruggles, Rotley would lose his mind. If Rotley disappeared from the earth, Ruggles would mourn himself to death.

Just give them time, Juicy. You're doing fine!
