Rather than child abuse, though, the childhood stressors at which we're looking are poverty, a lack of community resources, and racial discrimination, particularly in combination. We're not looking specifically at cancer, either, but at more general health outcomes. Not long ago I printed out an article from JAMA for my boss that suggested prevention of childhood hardship would be the most effective way of preventing chronic illness in adulthood.
