The "friend" hill is a big one to get over. Since he was there for her all through the hard times it is hard for her to see him in a different "role". I believe it is something that blossomed because she was moving out of the "grieving" stage and was ready to look. It took the events in between to allow her to see him that way.

I think I can see where Julie is coming from. She doesn't want to jeopardize her friendship with Mike, but there is a definate connection. They probably both felt similar guilt and I could see anyone in real life having the same kind of mixed emotions. If I were Julie, I would be quite apprehensive, but if I saw the potential for something more, I would openly discuss it and the emphasis of taking their friendship very seriously and how important it is. This way, there is more of a chance at remaining friends if going further doesn't "click".

I think both Mike and Julie feel guilt, it was apparent that Mike felt guilt when he was over at her house and didn't tell her the things that he knew about Richard. But I am glad he eventually told her. Mike was a good guy, and I'm glad Julie didn't end up with Richard.

I think both Mike and Julie were a little uncomfortable, and dealt with guilt from knowing her first husband......I think there are a lot of people out there that kinda have a "crush" on one of their friends' significant others - when you witness a great relationship, and don't have one yourself, I think people tend to try and "visualize" themselves in that place, so I think Mike is completely normal....... I give Julie credit for being willing to look beyond the friendship and risk the new relationship..... after all, Mike was a real good guy......

Mike Harris is in love with Julie as the story opens, but Julie is hesitant to reciprocate the feelings because she thinks of him as not only a friend, but because he’d been her deceased husband’s best friend and the best man in her wedding. Does Mike feel guilt in the same way that Julie does? Why or why not? Is this something that’s likely to happen in real people’s lives? If you were Julie, how would you feel? Would you be willing to risk the friendship?
