My 2 little ones are 6 weeks and a few days and I bathed them w/ baby shampoo [regular] and w/ luke warm water and had them in about 10-15 min. They really liked playing w/ the water. I bathe my older cats [their 5] 2 times a month. I am allergic to cats and dogs dandruff so we have been washing them bi-weekly since they were little. My dog and even my older cats love the hair blow drier, The kittens are not sure about it but and warming up to it. Oh I always take a towel out of the dry that is warm so they can rub on it.

Welcome to TDK Melissa. Your Layla is a real beauty! Mac & Grommie sent a Catster furrends invite and left a treat.

If you start bathing her at a young age regularly, she will learn to love the water. MacKenzie and Grommet started with a weekly bath at 9 weeks old. It really helped prevent any flea problems developing on them. Since they're indoor kitties, and seniors, they don't get bathed that frequently anymore. But, they still enjoy it, every so often.

Mac especially loves the water, even tries to jump in the bathtub with me; Grommet doesn't MIND the water and a bath, but much prefers the 'dryer warmed bath sheet' drying treatment after the bath ;-) We have a regular 'kitty spa day' here on bath day with no trauma to Kittymom at all!!

Thanks again for all the words of welcome, everyone! Libbykate helped me set up a catster page and link it to my picture too. I have more pictures of Layla on there.

I gave Layla a bath and then used a flea comb on her. She did better than I thought she would and only fought me when I put her in the sink. She even started to purr in the water! Hopefully we won't have too much more trouble with fleas since she only had about two or three that came off in her bath and combing. If not, we'll keep bathing and combing.

Hello and welcome.

When I got Polly and Suki ( a long time ago, neither one is alive any more), they were only 6 weeks old and covered in fleas and lice, they had caught from their feral mother. I took them to the vet and she prescribed some flea-powder called Head to Toe, specially designed for young kittens. Polly, in particular, looked really funny after I had dusted her with the powder and rubbed it in. Instead of shiny black she was dull grey - but it worked well and within a week or so they were clear. (I had to do the ears as well as they had ear mites.) Those kittens hated me for a while! :-)

Welcome Melissa. I actually have met your friend LibbyKate and she Rocks! Please come by often and chat. For kittens and fleas, I have always given them a bath using dawn dishwashnig liquid. Get the kitten wet, lather up with dawn and let it sit for 10 minutes to kill fleas and eggs. Don't do the face! If you see any fleas on her face then pick them off and drown them in soapy water as suggested above. After 10 mins (during which time Layla will let you know exactly how unhappy she is) rinse well. Then comb with a flea comb to make sure you get any stragglers off. Dry well and keep her warm until she is completely dry. That should take care of the fleas and will not harm her...other than the water part.

Welcome Melissa and Layla! Flea combs! Have a partner and take turns, one holding and one combing. I'm sure there is info in the tag thingy people are talking about, but it's a great way to get those buggers till it's safe to apply one of the vet approved (not OTC) remedies. A bowl of warm soapy water to dip and drown the fleas and a good flea comb and lots of patience!

Hi, Melissa and welcome to TDK! Layla is absolutely gorgeous. Look forward to chatting to you about her exploits!

I added the pink tag, 'fleas', at the top right hand of your thread, if you click on it, as Sox's Mom says, you'll see previous advice on fleas and diatomaceous earth. I would start off with a flea comb and a bowl of hot soapy water to put them in (yuck); kitties often really like being combed so it helps the bonding too! (except for a particularly grumpy Persian I used to know who would then hide until he got a chance to bite your ankles as you went by...)

Whatever you do about the fleas, Melissa, try to avoid OTC treatments. There have been some pretty awful reports of pets getting very sick and even dying from store bought flea products and collars.

Under the tags look for ones about fleas--there are tons of advice there. Diotomacious Earth is one product that is not harmful that works. I use Frontline on all my furry friends, but I don't think you can use it on an animal under 12 weeks. If you find one you probably have many more--they populate very quickly!!

Hi, I'm Melissa. One of my friends is on here and suggested I join. I'm a nurse and live in Waco, TX. I just adopted a 2-month old kitten, Layla, from the animal shelter. I think she's a seal lynx point...or some mix like that. She looks like a cross between a Siamese and a tabby and definitely is as talky as a Siamese.

I have one quick question. I found one flea on Layla today...could she have more, and if so, what should I do? I'm worried about using any kind of flea treatment on her because she's still so young.
