My 5th grade teacher, Mr Gordon, had bushy eyebrows like that. But they were also covered with dandruff. And he had hair in his ears...all covered with wax. It's a miracle that I could pay attention in his class at all!

I did not know you were part armenian..one of Rons close friends is...it was funny because the friendship built very slowly over a long period of time..he even told ron that it was very rare for him to trust and be close friends with anyone not armenian..he told them that since the numbers of people are so small now that they stick together...It took a long time to get to know him well, but we ended up with one great and very unique friend. Not to mention armenians have great cheek bones!!!!

AV...the mean waiters you mentioned reminded me of Antranik's Armenian bakery on Fowler and 56th. Have you ever been there? My dad was armenian, so I would stop in there now and then when I would feel nostalgic...mostly for armenian pastries...which are delicious. But the entire staff was so mean! They really were like the soup nazi...it was funny as hell!

....hmmm, I've never been to Don Jose's..... interesting it is an offshoot from Tio Pepe's..... which makes me think of another iconic favorite that closed - Remember Cafe Pepe's on Kennedy, across from the Valencia, and down a little bit west...... my Mom and Dad ate there for YEARS!....... another sad loss!

... my folks were such favorites, they knew all the waiters by name, and the waiters would always save them "their" table....... they used to make me laugh, the waiters were all 80 year old men, that had worked their forever!....and they were mean!.... I was always afraid to ask from something extra, because they were so grumpy....

.... sadly it's closed now!..... Began in Tampa in 1927, and was one of our best "local" secrets for years!...... the Univ. of Tampa bought the property, and will be expanding it's campus...... it always makes me sad to see some of our local favorites go away.....

Paella Valencia

Valencia is a Spanish coastal city where this dish is particularly revered.
Yield

6 servings (serving size: 1 2/3 cups)
Ingredients

    * 1  tablespoon  olive oil
* 3/4 pound peeled and deveined large shrimp
* 3/4  teaspoon  salt, divided
* 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
* 1/2 cup thinly sliced Spanish chorizo sausage (about 2 ounces)
* 2 (2-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken thighs, quartered
* 1  cup  chopped onion
* 3  garlic cloves, minced
* 1/2  cup  chopped tomato
* 1  tablespoon  capers, drained
* 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads, crushed
* 1 cup Arborio rice or other short-grain rice
* 2/3  cup  white wine
* 1  (14-ounce) can fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
* 1/2 cup frozen green peas
* 1/4  cup  water
* 18 mussels (about 3/4 pound), scrubbed and debearded
* 2 1/2 tablespoons chopped bottled roasted red bell pepper
* 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle shrimp with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper. Add shrimp to pan; sauté 4 minutes or until shrimp are done. Place shrimp in a medium bowl. Add chorizo to pan, and cook for 1 minute or until browned. Add chorizo to bowl.

Sprinkle chicken with 1/4 teaspoon salt and remaining 1/8 teaspoon black pepper. Add chicken to pan, and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until browned. Add onion and garlic to pan; cook 2 minutes or until tender, stirring frequently. Stir in the tomato, capers, and saffron; cook 1 minute. Add remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, rice, wine, and broth to pan; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 25 minutes or until rice is tender.

Add shrimp mixture, peas, 1/4 cup water, and mussels to pan. Cover and cook 8 minutes over medium heat or until mussels open; discard any unopened shells. Remove from heat, and stir in bell pepper and cilantro. Let stand 3 minutes.
