Oh, Kap, poor little baby. I'm so sorry. Sometimes all you can do is give these little ones warmth and love and comfort for the short time they are here. It sounds like you and your girlfriend did exactly that and bless you for that. You did the best you could, you got him medical attention and thanks to you, he knew what it was to be loved. We do care about animals, very much, and we know how much it hurts. Take care and know that you did your best for this little one.

Alright I just got news from my girlfriend and she thinks he is passing away. I guess I was too late. But thanks for your help, at my house(my moms, I am just 21 and still live with my mom) we have 4 cats and a dog, one cat which is mine and my girlfriends. I will definitely use this site as a resource more often. You guys were awesome with your advice, and seem to care a lot. Thank You

Hi, Kap, I'm so sorry to hear this. Your first and best resource is to go back to your vet, or to an emergency vet if you can. None of us here is a vet and so for any cat or kitten whose owner is really worried, the best advice is to get them to a vet, as fast as possible. If your little one is limp and unresponsive, that's what I'd be doing.

In terms of other things that could help, you don't say how old the kitten is. That's a lot of medication for any young cat, it could be that they're reacting badly to it or it could be that it hasn't kicked in properly yet. (This is why you need a vet.) Very young kittens and sick kittens have trouble regulating their own body temp. Is s/he on a heat pad, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, in a box, with enough room to crawl off if they get too hot, or are you cuddling them against you and giving them some of your own body heat? Basically, keeping them warm and comfy is important, and my own personal feeling is that gentle contact, touch and reassurance in a gentle voice is also very important, to keep them fighting.

Are they hydrated enough? I'll give you a useful website that tells you about hydration. The usual test is the 'tent' test -- pick up a fold of kitten's skin and let go. If it snaps back, kitten is hydrated okay. If it goes back more slowly or if it stays up (tented) for a little while, kitten is dehydrated, which can quickly become dangerous for kittens. Try to get as much pedialyte (available from supermarkets, baby aisle I think) down him/or her as you can. Gatorade will do, water is better than nothing. Obviously, be careful, you don't want to choke him/her. A big syringe with the needle removed is often the best way. Again, a vet is the best to rehydrate kitten -- they can give him/her subcutaneous fluids.

Nutrical is a high-calory paste that you can smear a little of along her gums/mouth -- not a blob, nothing she could choke on, it may give her a little more energy to fight. Karo corn syrup is another thing you could try.

Click on the pink tage 'sick' in the top left hand corner of the thread and you will see previous threads on sick kittens and advice given, as well as first aid methods for animals. But honestly, if it was me, I would be trying to get him/her back to a vet. I hope this helps a bit. Please get back to us and let us know how kitty is getting along, we worry about them on this site. Good luck!

Kap, from what you've told KW, it sounds like the kitten has probably not had any of its shots against the viruses that can attack unprotected cats. That could also be a part of the problem. I hope so much that kitty can fight off whatever it is with your love and care, but bear in mind that these little ones are very fragile. If the vet didn't sound very hopeful, you and your friends may need to be prepared.

Okay all I got was that there was fluid in the lungs. I was not the one who was at the vet, it was my girlfriend and her sister. They are sleeping/ with the kiten. From what I gathered the vet did not seem too optimistic and did seem to suggest possible hospitalization, problem is that we really could not afford the vet visit, much less more care. I am not sure how old the kitten is, showed up in my girlfriends front yard about a week ago. Probably a few months.

Hi, Kap. Welcome to TDK!

I would contact the vet again or an emergency vet to see if your kitten needs to be hospitalized. Kittens can go downhill very quickly. Did the vet say what she thought the problem was? Please keep checking back as other TDKers will add comments/suggestions. Let us know how this little one is doing. :)

Kitten has lots of fluid in his lungs. Went to vet hours ago and she gave us Clavamox and injected him with Buprenex. Also gave us Equi-Phar Fursomide. Now it is breathing very quickly and is very tired. Can't walk more than a few steps at a time, won't eat or drink. The kitten looks in bad shape. Any suggestions?
