I was reading about freak accidents with kittens and came across the stories of stepping on little kittens. And it came back to me that I am almost certain that I had done this when I was about 8 but I must've blocked it from my memory. We had so many litters of kittens at home and I vaguely remember clumsily carrying a heavy box into a dark bedroom and a kitten was underfoot. I turned on the light and recalled seeing the kitten in the room limping. My older sister came in and handled the kitten. I immediately felt that I'd screwed up and left the room. I honesty do not remember what happened to that kitten. I just knew in my mind I'd done something terrible and did not want to face it. 30 years later, if I recall the story with my older sister and get confirmation that I did indeed mortally wound the kitten, I know I'll be upset. Even knowing that these things are an accident, all one can think about is how precious all little kitties are. Makes me just want to squeeze my 8-year old fur-ball all the more cuz I truly love cats.

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, and I apologize if my post is out of place as I have not been to this board before, but I have had this same thing happen to me, and I know exactly how awful it feels. I found this thread on a google search looking for people who had gone through what I had. I haven't read all of the replies because I can't quite bear to hear details yet, but my story is similar to yours - she ran directly under my foot, at four weeks old. It was very traumatic, and I don't want to go into too much graphic detail, but we'll say she didn't suffer long - at most 15 seconds, and I held her in my hands as she died. I weigh 421 pounds, down from almost 500, and this has devastated me to know how badly my weight affected it - I can't help but blame myself, thinking maybe if I just didn't weigh so much, she might have lived... but that's just my own guilt and insecurity issues I guess... anyways, I am very sorry this happened to you. It happens more often than you think - several people around here have confessed to having the same thing happen to them. Bad things just happen sometimes, and you can't blame yourself or the cat really.

OMFG. A VERY similiar thing happened to me. A small kitten i adopted (4 weeks old) that I stepped on, and it started convulsing. It was still alive, and just rolling it's head back and forth, barely struggling on to life. I had a friend who had a kitten break it's neck too, and did the same thing, and it lived in pain for another 20 minutes....I couldn't watch this kitten go on for that long, and I'll leave it at that. The little guy wasn't walking, and I had him under my bed in a box. Well in the night, I started feeling sick and needed to run to the bathroom to throw up. I'd had him for 2 days and he couldnt get out of this box, but somehow he did. My room was dark, and I didn't have my glasses on, so he had no chance :(. I too got some cold responses from people on my blog, seems like people like to yell when you do something like this, but I wonder what they would do in the same situation...

I'm so sorry for your losss :(

You can't blame yourself-kittens are small and fast, and they don't let you know where they are.

Comfort yourself with the knowledge that his passing was so fast he probably never felt anything. And think about how good his life was with you, rather than dying alone, cold hungry and scared in a storage shed.

If little sister seems really lonely, consider getting her a playmate. The shelters are full of kittens who need homes. It would be a fitting tribute to the kitten you lost to pass the love he gave you on to another needy soul.

Lizzyanne, please don't blame yourself. These things just happen when you have a baby kitty literally underfoot. And while sad stories are...well...sad...we're here to support each other. We've all told each other sad stories when we needed to get something out in the open. You're in good hands here at TDK.

I am so sorry for your lost. It was an accident and please do not blame yourself.
My husband accidentally stepped on our adopted kitten and died. It happened the day after my 5 year old daughter's birthday. "Kitty" as we named him was my husband's birthday gift for her. He was getting ready for work and he leaned over the utility sink and Kitty must have played around his foot and he thought they were just boots or shoes and when he put his foot down, he saw Kitty under his foot and died instantly.
It was a heartbreaking morning especially for my husband. I can see teary eyes in him as he went to work.
As I think of ways how to say it to my children when they wake up, I search online for comfort, ideas, etc. I cried hard and still crying as I write this.
I asked God for help and wisdom.
Wishing you all the best.

Sincerely,

I am so sorry that you had this situation with the kitten underfoot. Last night, I accidently killed my kitten when he got caught in my recliner and was crushed.

I know how you felt.

I've had thee worst day ever. It is the day after Thanksgiving and is Black Friday. After this happened, I had to go to work and deal with huge crowds of people and put on a 'happy' face thus hiding how I'm really feeling. I am just drained dry from coping with my grief in this way.

I'm too numb to even say much else other than just know that I'm with you in this and feel what you felt.

It's no more your fault that it was mine. I realize that this is little comfort when you are the one who did it but nonetheless it's true. We did not mean to and it was an accident.

I sincerely wish you well.

Hello I know I'm posting this a couple of months after you need help for you grief but I wanted to tell you it's completely alright and accidents happen, regardless of how sad they make you. My little brother had an equally sad situations with one of our young kittens my other brother had found skinny and starving in our neighborhood and took in. He was such a sweet little kitten we had named Oscar, and about a month after we had him (he was probably 8 or 9 weeks old and an outside cat) my younger brother was on his way to soccer practice when he realized the kitty had been sitting inside the wheel cavity of his truck. Needless to say beautiful little Oscar (I called him squish face because he had a Persian like face and was absolutely adorable) had passed on and my brother felt awful.

I hope you've been able to move on. Good luck, and you're definitely not a bad person.

Accidents do happen Volatile_geek and you did the best you could in a very sad situation. You most likely had the knowledge from your hunting experiences to enable you to help the wee one on his way quickly and painlessly. It would not have been easy at all so I'm glad you were able to express yourself here. I hope it has been a help. Do you think you might get another kitty as a companion to the female. Do let us know how the female is getting on as she grows up. Come back and chat with us.

Yesterday we acquired two unwanted kittens for my children. The cats were siblings, one male, one female. Tonight, while I was working on a vehicle, they snuck over to me. I saw one, and picked her up. I *thought* the male was on the porch; but I didn't verify. I moved the truck and tragically fatally injured the kitten. I'm not a vet, but am familiar enough with anatomy and physiology that there was no chance of recovery. I, as gently and painlessly as I could, helped him pass on, and gently laid him to rest under a tree. My children are 7 and 8, and fully understand the concept of life, death, and our beliefs of the afterlife; but I couldn't bring myself to tell them that their father not only severely injured his pet, but had to put it out of its pain. I explained that cats are born primarily as predators and sometimes they return to their wild instincts and leave regardless of their love for their owners. I've hunted and fished my entire life, assisted in butchering at farms, but never have I felt so heart-torn as I am about this kitten. I'm not necessarily expecting understanding from anyone nor am I expecting atonement for what I did tonight. I write this simply because I cannot express my actions to anyone in my household. thanks for reading.

Great news SAS, you and your little family have a really wonderful home together. I'm with MCW, you might want to think about starting a new thread when you tell us the names of Mama Kit and the little ones. And maybe...just maybe...you might want to change your screen name. You came to us as "Sad and Sorry" which I totally understand, but now we are getting to know you and to me you are the Kitty Poet (or insert name of your own HERE, lol).

That's really good news SAS, very pleased to hear it!

Has anyone explained how to start another thread here on TDK, or about the other threads going on? It just seems very sad to see your thread title come back up to the top of the board, especially when you have something to celebrate!

To start a new thread, just select fromt he general headings at the top of the main page - General Chat for example - then scroll down until you see a box to put your new thread's totle in and a larger box for the text. Type away & hit send - easy!

You'll have already seen there are a number of threads running at any one time - there's usually at least two that occur every day, the Cafe and the Nighshift, where general conversation is the name of the game. Other threads tend to be more subject specific. Please don't feel shy about jumping in to a thread, just click the one that's of interest, and post away!

I look forward to seeing you on one of the other threads soon! :o)

Daily Kitten Family: I passed my inspection! Thank you everyone for your support! I was a little fearful when my inspector noticed one of the banks of switches for my art lights and asked me to turn them on. Two years ago one of the inspectors objected to my art lights and told me to get rid of them. This time around the inspector LOVED my art and told me it was the most beautiful apartment he had inspected! He said that he wants to be my inspector next year to see what new art I have created! Their reactions could not have been more different. Mama and kittens and Angel say thank you for all the love you have shown us! Now it is time to name the rest of my cat family since we are all here to stay! Again, thank you to all The Daily Kitten Family; you have my love always!

SAS, Angel is a beautiful name for your little kitten, she led you to the TDK and to keep her Mama and siblings by your side for comfort and companionship. She is an Angel to you all. Bless you and kitties.

Bless you Owl Watcher. To your beautiful calico cat I give a return message for my kitten from Mama cat, her siblings and me: Please wait for us as we all miss you terribly. I know we will all be joyfully reunited one day. I now name this departed kitten Angel after all the angels on Earth I have met at The Daily Kitten. One day all of us (both human and animal) will be reunited at the Rainbow Bridge and we will all continue to be a blessing to each other forever. I cannot thank everybody at The Daily Kitten enough. Thank you, thank you, all the members of my new family.

*A big, soft, furry calico cat carefully approaches you. As it is obvious she is a Rainbow Bridge kitty (she left this world two years ago), she does not want to startle you. She is carrying a post card sent by one of Rainbow Bridge's newcomers - a sweet little kitten who wanted her bring you a message. On the front of the card is a brilliant rainbow that stretches over a lush meadow. On the back of the card is a single paw print. The calico purrs softly as she offers you the card, her green eyes trying hard to convey the message the kitten wanted her to give you - that he is alive and well at the Bridge, and that he loves you and does not want you to feel bad. The cat gives you soft, comforting purr-meow and turns to go back to the Rainbow Bridge*

Thank you: I'm sure my apartment will pass inspection. My apartment is a piece of art, with unique art lights embedded in beautiful vignettes that I've created everywhere. I can't describe it, but everyone who sees it says how beautiful it is and that I should have tours, though the number of people who have passed through here is actually very small since I don't know that many people. A lot of work it's been, with tons of lights & glue sticks and imagination. I should say that everyone EXCEPT for the Section 8 people love my place, since say that so many lights present a fire danger, so I won't turn them on tomorrow. When I get a digital camera I will take pictures of Mama cat, babies and apartment and share the photos on The Daily Kitten, who I now consider part of my extended family.
I want to add that I've been giving profuse little kisses to remainder of my cat family and one kitten in particular even knows how to kiss back. My way of saying how much I love the kitties and telling them how sorry I am. I will never get rid of these cats no matter what happens. Whomever told me how much a comfort these kitties would be if I kept them was spot-on.
