After 5 weeks old they escaped anything, no matter how tall the walls on their box were, I would get home to find kitties running around everywhere, so I finally gave up and kitten proofed the room they were in, covered wires and plugs, took out anything they could break, also covered any openings they could get in to, put lots of toys on the floor, 3 tiny liter boxes with non clumping liter and leave them there when I'm not home, as soon as I get home they get to play anywhere they want. Mommas litter box is in a spot where only she can get in to cause it has clumpling litter. I think they need a lot of space now cause they love playing, jumping and running like little horsies. Goodwill has them for cheap and it keeps them out of trouble when they cant be watched. I feel bad but its for there own good. It doesn't have a bottom and for 3-4 week old kittens they can't squeeze thier little sweet selves out of the holes. I put an old screen on top and it is purrrfect! You could probably find one on Freecycle, CL, Garage Sale, etc for free or really cheap. Or, like PP say, a large dog crate would work well too. I think for 4 week olds, though, a box is a wee bit small. That gives the little rascals two 'rooms' to play in and allows them to explore. If you have the space, you can add a third box and put their litter box in that one. I used one for a mama cat and kits and had room for a bed, small litter pan and wter... and you can hang toys from the top to amuse them... They just want to be out, or on the other side of the door or whatever. You need to keep them safe! If you feel they are too restricted get a larger box. They will let you know when they are too old for the box (they will escape) If they are not crying for more than 5 mins or so before settling, you are doing what mom would do minus the snuggling down with them. It's not KMR it's already made and it's for newborns. Il introduce water when they wake up. I still want to know if my technique is ok! Is the box thing ok? Your babies are young enough they could still need a little stimulation to poop. They play for 1-2 hours then I stick them in box to sleep they whine for abou 5 mins and try to get out but then pass out for long time(4hours about) I haven't started giving them water because I thought kitty milk was hydrating.
