Well that is all settled then. Now for someone to sneak over and rescue the outdoor cat. When I was around 9 my brother came home with the best present my sister and I had ever received, a Golden Retriever/Irish Setter mix. My brother was out living on his own for the first time. It was the summer before his Senior year in Highschool and he and several friends were sharing an apartment for the summer and running the Aerial Tramway in Gatlinburg. Next Door wa a family with a beautiful, sweet dog that they were abusing. On a chain no food, no water during a very hot summer. When they did bother to feed her it wasn't enough. In their words, they were teaching her discipline! One night my brother and his roommates took a hacksaw and cut the chain and brought her to their apartment and started feeding her whatever they had on hand (Pizza, Jelly donughts, peanut butter) A few days later they brought her home to my sister and me. Frauline was our best dog/best friend and lived and was loved until I was in my Freshman year of college, She waited until I came home one weekend from school and we had one last session with the tennis ball. The next morning she was gone. Blessings to everyone out there who does what it takes to rescue abused and abandoned animals. You make a difference in the lives of not just the animals but int he families who really love them.

Well, it's done. On Sunday, Danielle emailed me and told me she'd get the landlord information to me by yesterday. I have not received an email or phone call since then.

So I emailed her a few minutes ago and expressed my regret that, since I didn't have the landlord's info by the time she indicated she'd send it, that I'm very sorry, but I have to decline her application to adopt Rocky.

You have no reason to gave this preson A REASON for not getting your kitten. I raised Shih-tzu for 23 years & Labs before that .I have saved lots of cats, kittens & dogs & puppies. People that can kick a family pet of any kind outside in the winter , (or summer)Don't need any kind of a animal.I want people to LOVE my animals like I do . I only save an animal to find them a GOOD home,Most the time better than what I can give them. I did not sell my puppies just to anybody with money .They had to give them a very good home. If I seen a dog living outside & If they wanted my puppy for a play toy for the kids ,They didn't get one. & that went for the animals I saved. I'm not as nice as you are to people that can't treat a animal with love & kindness . I would probably die for one. I would have told the lady off & took my kitten home with out thinking anything about it. Sometimes you have to tunnel vision it to do what is right..for the animal not the person. They can take care of themselves. We are the keepers & the voice for the animals, I love animals maybe to much but that's me... Bertie

hey dear, you did right! if the person wont care for the cat properly, the cat needs to be where it will be cared for. it's like abusing a child, wether or not you wish to. they need to realise this is a living creature who has feelings, and it needs axtra attention because its not as vocal as we are. you're doing the absolute right thing, and it's gutsy.....ur caring for that little sweetface before yourself or anyone else, and that's wonderful.

Anncetera, you are so wise, and you are doing the exact right thing with D, and with Rocky.

Years ago, one very young lady kept her declawed and unspayed Siamese outside. The poor cat was constantly tormented by other animals, and one elderly lady "cat-napped" the Siamese. The cat, named Jezabel, was taken to the vet for a full bill of health, groomed, spayed, and returned to her new owner, who promptly had her fitted with a microchip and a new name and collar and all the other things a Siamese deserves (which is a LOT!).

Some time later the young lady walked by the older lady's apartment and asked where she got her cat, saying that cat in the window looked like her old cat, Jezabel, who had been missing for several weeks.

The elderly lady (who could have played a dowager empress in any movie), said,
"My cat's name is Eleanor of Acquitaine, and God gave her to me. Why?"

The younger woman said, "She reminded me of my cat. I was just wondering."

The dowager simply smiled, and said, "Wonder no more. God works in mysterious ways." And then she closed the door.

That dear lady was the one who gave me all of the details, after the younger lady had moved away and when I was admiring her beautiful Eleanor. Eleanor was sunning herself in the window, and she looked so well groomed and well cared for, and her purrs could be heard through the screen.

However, not all stories end happily. I hope some nice neighbor "cat-naps" that poor little declawed kitty.

I'm sorry to admit that I didn't call her last night. I hit my period in late afternoon, and wasn't ready to deal with D being upset at the same time that I was already grumpy and seriously uncomfortable (physically). It will happen today, though.

Sometimes being conflict-avoidant does not work to my advantage. I will keep in mind the strength to which you're all backing me up on this, and I'll keep focused on the fact that I have to do what's best for Rocky.

I agree with KW, first, and others...no forgiveness should be requested. Putting a decalwed cat outside?! Oh no, uh uh. No, no, no. You have to be responsible-even if just in your heart- for the baby's outcome. No human adoption agency would even consider this child. Why should your concerns have any less validity. Very good job on your part.

I have to deal with kitten and cat adoptions all the time at the shelter where I volunteer. The suggestions from the others are great: keep is short. A good general communication technique is to state your observations and then express your "concerns". I like to use "I have a concern about ...". When that is met with resistance, the guns come out: "We all work very hard here to rescue these animals, and finding the right match for them is our priority. I'm sorry, but maybe this isn't the best match". For more info, go to imaginehumane.org and look for the shelter pages directory; in it you'll find info on "meeting your match" which contains really good hints for potential adopters...it takes the weight off of you! :) Good luck with it.
