they were there for 35 years, so my grandma was born there and they left when she was 24. the whole time they were there no one was bitten by a rattlesnake. how in the world did they manage that one when the few times we have gone there we have seen one every trip?

how they managed to survive i don't know, there is not much water and what could be fields are filled with small cactus and rocks (btw those cactus hurt when you step on them, not that i would know...). There is a dry wind almost all the time and it can get extremely hot. the best land is down below where they lived at that is down a steep cliff. however obviously cattle can survive out there and they would be a source of money and food if needed.

I don't blame you for not getting too close to your grandma's homestead! Do you know when your grandma and her family first moved to that location? I think it is fascinating to learn about family history in the context of the place where it happened. It is all the more meaningful to be able to actually go to the place where these family events happened. It gives one an appreciation for where one comes from. (I love genealogy!) :)

My grandma and her family left the homestead sometime in the 40's so it is in really good shape then considering. the main problem was some cattle went in there at some point in time and some of the floor caved in then. the other house there that came after my grandm's family left was deserted sometime in the 60's and the dish towels are still hanging from the cabinet underneath the sink, even though they look like if you touched them they would crumble. its dry enough out in the middle of montana apparently that it preserves things really well...some newspapers were still in the other house as well.

however we don't plan on going back there again after the too close encounter with a rattlesnake and since the rattlesnakes don't rattle before they strike that time of year (june) it isn't to safe.

School starts way to soon - next monday. it would even sound better if it started september 1 vs. starting august 31.

Vacation was fun (actually it was three differant times). We took the trip to the midwest in june because that is where my mom's family lives. Kayaking me and my dad went together in july. then camping was a few days in the beginning of august.

Great photos FF50. Thanks for sharing them. In WA the sky, the water and the sand are different shades of gray. And the trees are very green. I love the cow photos. It's funny how they just look at you and chew.

the starfish that we saw here pink and purple, though there was an orange one. the pictures of the starfish are kinda blurry since it is hard to take a picture while in a kayak and trying to not drop the paddle or fall in yourself. that water would be freezing...its in the San Juan Islands.
