He was standing inside the doorway to Dachau Concentration Camp. I was on the road leaning over the fencing looking at the stream. I looked up to the gate and said out loud, "I just can't imagine the horrors that happened inside that gate." This man hobbled to me and grasp my hand with a grip I thought might break my hand. He was Polish. He understood my words, but he spoke very little English. In Polish, German, and English he shared the story of his life in the camp. I looked at him and said I am so sorry. He made me repeat not sorry but will remember his words and spread them farther than he can. I have NEVER forgot that promise or him. I know his story--the horrors he lived through and saw. I walked with him to the parade ground, the crematorium, and the wall his best friend was shot at. I held his hand and walked with him down the Poplars that have been planted. He survived Dr. Mengele--so many did not to include his twin brother. I will carry his visions and do all in my power to never see such terrors. Genocide still exists today. Heros like this deserve such honor and glory that they will never see or even expect.
