They're known to be calm, sweet and very loving. Plus they're small. I'm not sure about the barking habits of a beagle though. Any dog if they're bored and don't get the attention they need will likely bark though. =) Good luck. I hope you'll go to a shelter for your dog.....there's alot of dogs that need loving homes. Not only are they pretty lazy (I used to take him on walks only to carry him back home because he'd lay down and refuse to get up!), but they also love cats! My family has had a few shih-tzus and they've all been really sweet dogs and all have loved their feline brothers/sisters.
