You are from the UK right? I can't help you with the exact laws over there...but in australia we have free legal aid. THere are small claim compensation courts or tribunals,(think of like judge judy) which actually wouldn't cost you anything cause you represent yourself. I think this may be an option if the RSPCA refuses to comply with you. I think they should buy you another kitten (not that it makes it okay but they owe you that in the least). Also I think contacting the media is a good idea. I have almost finished a degree in Media Relations..so my advice with contacting the media would be ring them direct or write up a press release with a brief outline of what happened and Attach a picture of your kitten. Good luck.

Hi Lucy, just seen your reply, am emailing you the name of the RSPCA's chief executive plus HQ address. I too would steer clear of instigating legal advice at this stage, but would make it very clear that a full inquiry is required as to how this happened, and an urgent nationwide review of this practise is needed. Feel free to email me back, you can send me a draft of your letter if you like, a second pair of eyes never hurts!

a tiny kitty. Something needs to be done. You and Molly are in my thoughts and prayers. This is so sad.

Lucy, as you're in England and this is the RSPCA, I'm not sure a lawyer would be the first place to go. I don't see how they could help or do anything but cost you money. I would take up MCW's very kind offer above, or write to the head office of the RSPCA in the UK. If I didn't get an apology and some kind of promise that they'd revise their policy of unqualified people doing this -- if indeed that IS their policy, I'd then write a letter to the local press -- I would think they might well contact you to do a story. Or if there is a local 'consumer rights' radio or TV programme, you might want to contact them.

(By the way, to avoid spam, we usually write our email addresses by spelling out the words 'at' and 'dot', it makes it a bit harder for the spammers to pick it up. You can edit your post up to an hour after posting it so you may want to take your exact address out. The last thing you need right now is spam.)

My heart aches for you, I can't imagine anything worse than this, seeing it happen, it must have been such a shock and so terrible, you're right, no one else should have to go through this. If they are going to allow volunteers to perform this, they should at least be properly taught. Many {{{HUGS}}}

I'm with Spanky Mouse on this one. I think you should call the RSPCA and ask to speak to a director in the main headquarters. Then you should tell him/her that you are going to contact your local radio station and newspapers. This atrocious act needs public airing and the RSPCA should not be able to continue with their ludicrous practice. Are we saying that next we'll have lay-people doing home calls to vaccinate children? I don't think so. I'm sick of the casual treatment of animals. If this happened to a child, there would be public outcry, probably on an international scale.

that is so awful. I can't believe it. I would (when you're ready) get another kitten. I would also seek legal aid for compensation. I think the person should pay a penalty. Check out the laws. The person should be liable because the death of your kitten was due to their negligence.

I too am stunned that an unqualified person was allowed to do the chipping. Having watched our cat be chipped I can't understand how it could have happened as you need to pull up the skin into a tent in order to insert the chip. Had the worker had any training at all in the procedure, I'd really wonder if they had.
This must have been a very upsetting and traumatic time for you Lucy and poor Molly doesn't have her playmate any more. Do find another playmate for Molly especially while she is still young. I hope you get a reply from the SPCA about the situation.

I was just filled with horror when I read this. How truly heartbreaking. Poor darling Hugo and poor Molly, now left alone. I cannot believe that the SPCA let an unqualified volunteer microchip a tiny kitten -- I would have thought this should only be done by vets. I'm appalled. Much love and many hugs to you, your heart must be breaking.

Lucy, welcome to TDK, I'm so very, very sorry it's under such tragic circumstances. This certainly needs following up with the RSPCA, and I'm appalled they've made no effort to contact you and apologise properly / explain why this happened. At the absolute least this woman should be suspended and/or stopped from carrying out this procedure, and for your own peace of mind you need to know that's happened, and they need to urgently review their operating methods.

I don't know how much help I can be, but I am an associate member of the RSPCA by virtue of a monthly donation, so may be able to give you a name further up the ladder if you have no acceptable response from the local branch. Let me know if you think I can help, we can swap email addresses and take it from there.

In the meantime, yes, Molly needs a playmate, it will help her not miss Hugo quite so much, and the sooner the better before she gets too used to being an only cat. Can I recommend The Cats Protection League? I think steering away from the RSPCA in this instance would be a good idea...unless you paid an adoption fee for two kittens, in which case they owe you one, in blunt terms, and should be falling over themselves to sort this whole situation out.

This is absolutely unbelievable and scandalous. The RSPCA must answer to this. Micro-chipping is a surgical procedure and should ALWAYS be carried out by a professional vet, as the loss of your sweet innocent Hugo has shown so tragically. And how horribly ironic that an organisation which professes to be about caring for animals has allowed a situation like this where pain and death has been needlessly inflicted on a kitten. This is what they are supposed to be PREVENTING. You must take this further, for Hugo's sake, and for the sake of all the kittens at risk from cowboy paramedics like this woman. I am in shock reading your story.

I say get another kitten to help both you and her get over the loss. Nothing like a house-full of kitties! I agree with everyone else here - it was their fault and should reimburse you for the microchip and loss of life. Hugs to you both.

I am so sorry. This outrages me so i cant even imagine how you feel. I know how helpful microchips can be but someone who is doing even the most rutine procedure should know how to do it so awful things like this dont happen. I think that a good way for you to get over this could be to get another kitten for molly. It is your decision, but I think it will help you deal with the death of hugo and help you focuse taking care of your one remaining and healthy kitten and maybe a new friend for her. I know there will never be a replacement for hugo, but he is now in kitten heaven playing with other new friends.
