I finally have had time to read everyone's stories! I enojyed them all!!

Annie- Thanks for replying! Ginger is adorable and seems like a character!

Siobhan - Hermes sounds like a cool kitty--haha I have a turtle named hermes! Thats too bad about the health problems, but he sounds like a cuddle bug! Must have been meant to be to end up with a boy!

Sammy- Hootie sounds like a good judge of character! Showin you who he didnt like..how funny. He sounded like a very mellow kitty to be moved around like you had to. i am so sorry for your loss :(

Elenki- That must have been so hard to leave your kitties behind. I can't even imagine...but at least the kitties didn't have to leave each other. I love your story about Lolita. What are the chances of a kitty coming in with the exact description... amazing. Sumi and Miso sound like quite the pair haha--hopefully miso gets some rest!

Jeankit - Thats awesome that you found homes for all those kitties! Thats good that you kept the mommas-- a lot of times people leave the mom behind. Crockey sounds like he was lucky to pick a kitty lover and find a second chance at a good life.

Bumblebee- It sounds like you have known a lot of cats and made many people happy with them! Thats very good that you were able to place so many kitties over your life. Too bad your daughter lost interest but at least you have 4 little love kitties of your own.

ILiketea- The shelter must have known what kitty you needed haha. Is Sophie your avator? She is adorable!!! I am glad you found your soulmate cat!!

I adopted Sophie from a shelter. I was looking around online one day on Petfinder.com and I saw this adorable kitty and wanted her, but after emailing the shelter and letting them know what i was looking for, they recommended my Sophie instead. Looking at her pictures online I was hestiant...she wasn't jumping out and screaming at me to be adopted but when I met her..that was it..she purred and rolled over to show me her belly and love :)

What a wonderful thread! I have really enjoyed reading all these stories! Thank you Court for this thread! :)
My Perry, came from us taking his mom, Jasper, for my daughter, 13 years ago, who was surprisingly pregnant! Jasper had 4 babies. We kept two ~ Perry and his sister Tiara Rose Marie. Some yrs. later a friend brought her friend to my house looking for a kitty and Tiara went right to her. This lady just lost her cat at 18 yrs. old and was SO lonely. I told her she could have Tiara if she wanted. We also had Oliver at the time and maybe another cat? My daughter had collected a few..... I gave her to this lady over Thanksgiving and Perry was SO upset, he cried for her for at least 3 weeks. Looking all over the house calling "Me eh ow, met eh ow..." and it broke, my heart... I didn't know better NOT to give a sibling away. I was new to having so many kitties. :( She picked Oliver & Prudence at the pet store and Chad came from a rescue place. She got them in different yrs. Years later, she saw a mama cat and her 4 babies across the street from the ice cream store under an abandoned home. I started to drive there each night after work to take them canned and dry food. One black kitty was run over, the one grey and white adopted by a lady and Mama cat, Cole and My Gavin I brought home and they lived outside. My boyfriend at the time made a lovely Cat House for me for my Christmas gift. :) I LOVED it! I ended up bringing the two babies inside as another outside cat Rusty attacked them and I had to take them to the vet. He didn't bother Mama, only the boys. Mama loved her cat house too. Then we moved here. I later gave Mama and Cole to a lady who has 4 kids and 6 acres of land and a big barn. I still feel guilty giving them away..... :( I gave them to her on Christmas Eve as a gift from Santa for her kids and they wouldn't go anywhere near the kids! They both had been so loving to me too. Broke my heart. But, where we live now, cannot have "outside only pets". My daughter gave Prudence away to her BF's mother as a Mother's day gift so that left Perry, Oliver Twist, Chad and Gavin. I basically took care of the cats anyway and as my daughter got older, she "lost interest" in the cats and now hates Cat Hair all over! DUH?? So, that is how I ended up with these four precious babies who I love immensely. Daughter basically said, if I don't want them, to take them to the ASPCA! I said, "Sure so they can kill them!? Ah... no..." They have been together for almost their whole life and I will not split them up. So,that is my story. :)

These are some great stories to share/thanks for asking! Dot appeared in my yard as a soon mom-to-be feral/had her kits under my rhubarb bushes...brought the whole family inside to be safe/gave the kits away & kept mom/Dot! That was
13 years ago! Crockey showed up last year probably was someone's pet that was left behind! He was sporting an injured eye area and full of fleas! Got him checked out/de-flead and house broken! Not certian of age/maybe 5+ per Vet...they are not a two-some yet, but at least get along!

My first cats were baby sisters, the litter of a friend's tabby who was 'got' by the local ginger tom before they could fix her. We called them Purkinje (Kinj) and Klein. They lived together with me and my then husband for 10 years, then we split up and I moved out. I so desperately wanted to take my soul-cat, little Klein with me, but I weighed it all up and knew I had to leave her with her sister in the home she knew and loved. It broke my heart but it would have been more selfish to take her and impose all those changes on her. They lived to be 17 and 18, together til Kinj died. I got the news that Klein had passed on the morning of my birthday one year. I didn't stop crying all day.
I found Lolita in a vet's clinic that I had phoned, wondering if they had any rescue kittens. At the time he had none, so he asked me what kind of kitten he should keep for me if they got a few in at once, which often happened. I laughed and said it didn't matter but if there was more than one, I'd love one that resembled most closely a long-haired patchwork calico tortoiseshell. We both laughed at the accuracy of the order! Some days later, the vet phoned me and said he had one kitten come in. A lady had found her being blooded to rotweiler and doberman dogs in a rough suburb of Dublin. He said she was in a pretty bad state but I could take her and nurse her if I felt up to it. She was around 7 weeks old. I asked him what she looked like and he said "Well, what you said, remember? She's a very fluffy, calico tortoishell baby, really a little stunner, with some character!" I couldn't believe my ears, drove down there double quick and there was my Lolita, waiting for me, little feisty baby, walking like a crab, all fleas and lice infested, tail a bloody scab, bitten by dogs, coat dull and filthy, eyes stuck shut with a URI, lungs wheezy...you name it, she had it. Except she was strong, and she didn't consider herself sick at all! Home we went and I nursed her many ailments for 2 months until one day the top of her tail fell off and we realized it was perfect, it had just been scar tissue! This magnificent plume emerged as she grew older, and her eyes became her most beautiful feature. (you can see her on my catster page). She was my constant companion through thick and thin for over 18 years, and I loved her with all my heart, despite her crankiness and extreme sensitivity to noise and strangers. She passed in May '08 and with her went a part of me. She is buried underneath her favourite bush in the back garden and I still miss her every day.

Miso and sumi, my current babies, are both rescue kitties, found at the vet's. Miso is from a huge feral colony, all of whom were PTS except her, as the vet thought she looked strong. And so she is, though she has mild asthma. She was 1 yesterday, and is my darling girl, my big black panther, gentle and rather nervous. Sumi was found wandering in the road at 5 weeks, grubby and starving. She's been starving ever since, now 5 months old, would happily eat all day, rules the roost, terrorizes poor miso, is an entertainment system in her own tiny right, an extraordinary happy ball of incredible energy and fun. Sum-sum makes us laugh every day!

Great thread - I have enjoyed every story very much, and many of them have made me cry. Great idea Court!

These stories are so great. Mine is quite plain by comparison. This is how I became staff to Hootie. After my second husband died, my daughter brought me this almost tuxie named Snoopy and wanted me to look after him as she was moving into a new apartment that didn't allow pets. Imagine!! I have no idea how old Snoopy was so I gave him a birthday of Sept. 1, 1994. I got him Sept '95. It became quite obvious that this was her way to get me a cat and so I renamed Snoopy to 'Hootie' after Hootie and the Blowfish. After some months I started dating and Hootie wasn't very receptive to some of the gentlemen but when I met Bob, he took to him instantly and was all over him like fleas. After wew were married, Hootie adjusted to his new digs but not any children under 3' tall as they would squeal and chase him to try and pick him up. Hootie grew into a handsome kitty (because of Pounce treats, I am sure) and got the nickname of 'Sow-Cow' by one of our grandchildren as he was getting quite portly.

Hootie gave us many years of pleasure even moving from NY State fo the grat state of Florida and going through 4 hurricanes with us! He never complained about being shut in the hotel with us for the weekend when Frances would just not leave Florida. I think it was Frances or Jean, it is hard to remember the flash of 'canes that year.

Hootie passed quite suddenly to Rainbow Bridge Labor Day weekend of '05.
After 2 weeks of heavy crying and Bob makeing a powerpoint presentation of Hootie's life, we went to the Humane Society just to see what was available. Yeah, right! That day Sammy picked Bob and that's how we got Sammy in Sept of 05.

I'll start with talking about Hermes. I had a friend at work who was going through library school, and she had a pair of silver-shaded American shorthairs. One was hers, the other was Virginia Creeper, a grand champion male that she was holding for a local breeder who was developing her cattery.

Amy was breeding Alta, her American shorthair, to make money for grad school, and when she said she was gonna breed Alta for the last time with Creeper, I convinced my husband it was time to add a second kitty to our home.

So Alta was bred with Creeper, and as she got bigger, I took pictures and visited her. The day the kittens were born was November 7, and a lunar eclipse was that very night.

I had hoped for a little girl, that I would have named Luna Eclipse. But doggone if Creeper and Alta didn't produce five little boys! Amy emailed me the day the kittens were born, telling me every couple hours "we have another one!" I could hardly wait to see these babies after work. Oh they were tiny! I got to help weigh them. Since we couldn't call him "Luna", we decided to call him Hermes. His full registered name is MelodyGardens' Hermes Lunar Eclipse" (Just so happened his grampa, a grand champion in his own right, was named "Lunar Eclipse.")

I visited often when the wee ones were so very little. I got a chance to interact and socialize with all of them. I didn't know for a couple months which one would be 'mine', since the breeder had to have first pick for her breeding stock.

Finally, after almost six months of loving the kittens and waiting, I found out which one would be mine! He was the first one to leave the family, and I thought he was the most beautiful kitten in the world. The first night I brought him home, he hid under my recliner! I was the only familiar smell in his new home! We put him in the kitchen by himself the first night, so our current cat, Tansey, could get accustomed to this new intruder into her domain. Poor Hermes...he cried all night.

My husband was the first one awake the next morning, and he went to check on Hermes. Little guy had hidden behind the refrigerator, where it was warm. When my husband called for him, little Hermes appeared from behind the refrigerator, his tail whipping back and forth, his butt wiggling. My husband called that greeting "Happy Butt" and Hermes still does it, every time he sees one of us and we're calling him. The tail swishes back and forth, and his hips/butt wiggle a bit as he trots toward us.

We didn't close him off in the kitchen after that first night, his cries were so pitiful.

He's grown into a HUGE cat. He has some problems, due to the interbreeding from the breeder. His parents were siblings from the same set of parents, but not the same litter. He has a heart murmur, his face is smooshed more than a Persian, and he has two snaggle teeth that give him his "Elvis sneer" but he is a very loving and devoted friend. He sleeps with me almost every night.

Hi Court, just checking back on this thread, it's been a busy weekend and now back to work time. Monday's always come too soon! To answer your question awhile back in the thread, my avatar picture is Ginger...it's her baby picture! She's a beautiful girl now but that picture is my favorite one - she was trying to climb up hubby's leg when he was feeding her brother with a bottle. And I agree with you, I think Lissa came to me 'cause she knew I am a total sucker for kitties ;o) Your avatar is very cute too, who is that little darling? I checked out your website, you are doing a great job with the greyhounds, I can tell you are a true animal lover yourself. Keep up the good work my friend.

OMG, my stories seem rather plain by comparison: PH was riding his bike one night and someone gave him Tommy; he brought Tommy home in a backpack. I had dozed off watching TV, so when I woke up and saw the backpack move I thought I was dreaming. When I saw it move again, he coyly told me, "I don't have a cat in my backpack." He opened the backpack and pulled out this jet-black teenage boy of a cat that looked like he weighed all of three pounds. We fattened him up (more like tripled his weight) and named him Tommy. Autumn came to us because Tommy went to live with my stepsons some time later; we saw her at a local animal shelter and she reached out and grabbed me. I think Autumn's mother was also there, but I think she had already been adopted out to someone else. Pumpkin came to us after a Boxer we adopted, Rosie, had been hit by a truck and killed. We went to another local animal shelter and found out that Pumpkin had been in the home of a cat hoarder who had died. I don't know if Pumpkin had been born in the house or if she had been born elsewhere. The shelter named her Pumpkin, and I never changed it.

Oh, my! That kind of timing is always painful... you feel guilty celebrating one event when something so sad is associated with it. Those first weeks were so chaotic! I remember not being able to track down friends for weeks, and none of our local cell phones worked because all the towers for the area code were non-functional! I hope that all healthcare institutions and cities have learned from the gulf coast's traumatic lessons - New Orleans certainly has! At least that good can come from that miserable experience! Hugs to you and your family especially given the recent anniversary!

They lived in New Orleans! Yeah it was tough. I kept searching all sorts of data bases, red cross and no one could find them. They had been taken to a hospital but they were both in ICU so they didn't know who they were or who to contact! It was really sad as my uncle "officially" died on my mom's birthday!

CC and Kuja came as a package deal, my oldest son and I were living in CO with Penny, then 2 yrs and Gir 1yr at time. My son came home from work and tells me that a co-worker had some 11 week old kittens she was trying to give away and can we please go see them. He twisted my arm, for all of about 30 seconds, and we were in the car and on our way. When we walked the lady was holding Kuja who was very shy my son immediately wanted him because of his ears, he is an American Curl, very cool ears, http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/articles/acurl.html , well that settled we were turning to leave and this kitten comes flying across the room, climbed all the way up to my shoulder and starting purring and licking my head and ears. How can you refuse that? So CC chose me and they both came home with us.

My Molly (who now lives with my mom since dad died. She went for a temporary visit while I moved and never left!) came to me by way of the Humane Society. She was the most pitiful cat I had ever seen. She had been in two abusive homes the last of which she had been locked in a closet for 5 months straight and then got beat for pooping on the floor. For the families entertainment she was the object of the fighting dogs aggression. They would drop her in the middle of the fighting dogs to "play" with. Imagine my horror when I found out her hoomin worked for the Humane Society that abused her.

Betty and Wilma came after my ex packed up, took everything and moved one day while I was at work. That included our two cats. I knew I could never get close to cats again because it hurt so much. I also knew in my heart I wouldn't remain catless for long. Five months later a situation arose that made me know I had to have the girls. I was thinking about getting two boy kittens and calling them Ben and Jerry but life had other ideas. There was a nurse I worked with whose cat has kittens about three times per year. They were getting tired of kittens so they were going to be used as "target practice" for hunting season! Imagine my horror when I heard their fate! I immediately snatched them up even though I was in the hospital recovering from emergency surgery. Our first days were very difficult as they too were mistreated as kittens. Not to mention they were so full of energy and I couldn't really bend over with 100 staples in my abdomen. We weathered out Hurricane Katrina together as we watched wall to wall coverage on TV during that time. It was difficult as my aunt and uncle were no where to be found during that time. I was on the computer and phone with the red cross looking for them. Finally word came that my uncle was killed and my aunt seriously injured in Hurricane Katrina. They truly helped me get thru a lot in the beginning and now are very special to me and my family!

Thanks for starting this thread, its a nice topic!

My landlady appeared at my door one day and said "You take this cat for an overnight." Cato was a real monster. The first night he grabbed my pork chop off my plate and ran. We had quite an argument over it :) He was just a farm cat...rescued from a barn where his feral mother had him. He was very small and very beautiful. He has no basic manners and is very controlling, but I love him. When I decided to move from the country to Calistoga, Cato came with me, although I would like to believe my landlady was upset by this. We have been together for six years :) He is no more affectionate than the day he was born :) Elizabeth

I cannot imagine having such responsibilities at such a young age. My friend's ranch has barn kitties and they serve a good purpose. It must be neat to have a pack of kitties!!!!

I found the farm cats when I started to feed calves.

Our family's farm actually belonged to my dad and his three brothers. My dad mixed the feed for all the cows/heifers and fed calves. Then he got MG (mynathesia gravis, if I managed to spell that right) and after his surgery wouldn't be able to work at the farm for at least three months. That is when I started to feed calves (by choice, I wasn't forced to lol!) and I was in 5th grade. On average there were 20 calves on milk at a time and then another 20 that were in that barn and were more like 6-9 months old. I don't know why my dad and his brothers trusted an 11 year old to feed all the calves but they did though my aunt helped sometimes. Of course all good farm have cats (or that is my opinion) and I took care of all the cats that hung out in the calf barn.

I have to honestly say that I really didn't love cats then, I liked them but not nearly as much as I do now. To me they understood me and knew I was going through a hard time. When my mom got really sick they all knew that I was sad and would follow me around all the time. I don't remember what she had, it was some wierd name that I never can remember. But the farm cats loved me even though I was the "wierd kid" in school and loved me no matter what, that was when I really started to love cats.

Not many of those cats from 6 years ago are still around but their kids and grandkids are and those are the barn cats that I now take care of. I could never NOT take care of them. They have been there for me, I am going to keep being there for them.

Cuddles was "chosen" by Daughter from a Humane Society shelter - she had two two other sisters that were "chosen" already, but not her!...... she was shy, at the back of the cage, and hissed when anyone came near - Daughter felt sorry for her, and we brought her home..... she hasn't changed in 14+ years, but we love her, and she is still Daughter's favorite!....

... Abby was rescured in the Charlie, Francis, Ivan hurricane days in Florida.... she was a baby kitten that was born in the "wild" of that turbulent time!.... a siamese breeder was hit, and apparently left town.... her "mama" had the kittens in the wild, and was trapped when the "winds died down".... Abby was one of those kittens.... her foster Mom was great, but had about 20+ kittens, and couldn't give each one enough individual attention -..... when we first got her, Abby would "hiss" ( softly ) and shy away from most people, but I took her up in my arms, and I swear I carried her around 24/7 for the first month!..... she is very bonded to me, doesn't really care about any other hooman, and is my heart and soul cat!..... when I was so sick and almost died in 2005, she lay by my side 24/7 and was the most comforting and consistent thing in my life!... (other than my family, but she was THERE)..... she travels with me, flys on airplanes, and pretty much, if I'm going, she wants to also!....

Madcat, the poem was beautiful. It made me cry! It makes me think of my Sid.

Kilroy what a great story! I cannot believe that someone could be so afraid of cats... geez. But what a story of fate... The cat happened to come into your apartment, you saw the sign, and then got the kitty you wanted! Awesome!

{{{MCW}}} How wonderful that you can bring another cat into your home to love; it's the best possible tribute to Titch.

I got my cat George a little over a year ago. I had wanted a cat for a long time, had grown up with them and was always sure I'd have another. Then one day as I was getting ready for work, I opened the door of our apartment and in walked a cat! "Hello, where did you come from?" I wondered, as this enormous cat walked around and looked to be making himself at home. The problem was, I had to leave for work and couldn't just leave him there for my husband to find when he came home from tennis. Not sure what to do, I shooed the cat out into the hall, where he immediately darted in through the next open door. Unfortunately, that wasn't where he belonged and the residents of that apartment HATE cats! I spent the next half hour trying to tempt kitty out from under the bed while the man of the house hid in the bathroom and his wife stood on a chair and shrieked. Finally I had to leave, and our Security department eventually reunited kitty with his owner (who was our next door neighbor).

All of this stirred up my "I want a kitty" urges, and about a week later a sign appeared in the window of the drycleaner next door saying that the city shelter's mobile adoption unit would be in our neighborhood that weekend. I told my husband, "I may be coming home with a cat" and off I went. As I waited in line to go into the mobile home full of cages, I could see this orange cat through the window. "Oh, there you are" I thought. But when I got there, the sheet of paper with his information was missing from his cage, which meant someone was trying to adopt him. I looked at the other cats, but kept being pulled back to this sweet orangie. And then one of the volunteers came back with a piece of paper - the other person had changed his mind! I said, "Yes, I'll take this one please", they bundled him into a cardboard carrier and I brought him home, where he settled in as if he'd never lived anywhere else.

Thanks for everyone posting their stories! I love it! Lots of fun to hear how you guys found the animals you love.

TheKnittingNinja- It is so wonderful to hear that you have taken in animals that people have labeled unwanted into your home. If only there were more people like you out there! I am sorry to hear about Sweets' past. I know what you mean about how they react to certain movements.

Annie- Is your avator Ginger? It want to cry she is so cute!! And how sweet about Lissa... She must have known you were an animal person!!

MadCat- Isn't funny how sometimes you just know its the right kitty for you? What a neat cat... l lost my Sid to kidney failure... I am so sorry you lost Titch the same way... It's awful.

Claudesmommy- Wow! That's so amazing that he happened to open the box. People do that a lot to kittens here in my community. We found a box taped shut--no air holes--with a mom and her 4 kittens in the garbage. It sounds like Claude was very in tuned to you.

SweetAmy- I know the exact look you are talking about. I used it many times on my mom... Works like a charm, especially when you have a pet giving the same look.

Nawlins- How cool that you have rescued Katrina animals! They sound very cute!

Ok I am just back from my errands this morning and their are so many responses! So far I have read Spanky's story and kitten whisper's story and I enjoyed both. Fostering is a great way to find your perfect kitty--and bottle fed babies make some of the best cats!
Kitten Whisper- I am so glad to know that you let animals back in your life. The hardest part about having animals is losing them. I bet you never imagined you would have three kitties romping around your house!

I am reading the others now... Thank you for all the replies! I hope you all enjoy the stories!
