I use crystals. The odor control just can't be beat and I can't imagine ever using clay litter again.Doesn't matter what brand - the cats aren't picky about it, so I get whichever one is on sale. Tibbs and Serena share one box. Tibbs digs forever when he is in there but ends up pooping on the top anyway. He never buries it, so we have to follow him in there and cover it up for him. LOL! Serena is a burier. We scoop daily (have to - Tibbs is a real prima donna when it comes to box cleanliness) and change out the litter once a week. Our cats have trained us quite well. :)

I find that sprinkling a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the box before I put in the clean litter seems to help. With four (sometimes 5) cats and six boxes, that's a lot of baking soda, but I get the giant bag from CostCo so it doesn't break the bank.

.... there are "top poopers" and there are "burriers" Cuddles the former, and Abby the latter..... bottom line - you need to scoop daily, and totally change/clean weekly..... best of luck to you!....hope you find a good combo that works!... there is a lot of good advise given on this site!

Milo, one of the two housecats, doesn't ever bury after he goes. That drives Mikey (the other housecat) nuts so he always goes an buries it and he likes to dig to China too.

After cleaning the litterbox Mikey loves to make "sand castles" by getting all the litter into as tall of stack as he can right in the middle of the litterbox. Never failing...and he can go at it for over an hour sometimes lol!

No my boys didn't mind at all when I swapped brands. I can say I have had them since they were two weeks old and they have never had an accident or didn't use the litter box. I was very lucky!

I have used Feline Pine, Scoop Away and A&H and with the Scoop Away I have used both the fresh scent and multi cat and they don't care just as long as its clean.

Mowgli is a digger - we make jokes that he is going to dig his way to china. He doesn't care about the litter or the scent but if the box is not clean he will sit on top of it and meow till I come clean it. He demands a clean box.

I use wood stove pellets as litter and will clean the litterboxes each day. LOL the farm cats do get litterboxes...just so I can watch how their poo is looking; if they need less bone/more bone or if what they are getting is working.

Iliketea, I used Feline Pine Clumping litter when the 4 kittens were tiny. It works good but I realized that all the sneezing wasn't due to kitty colds, they were allergic to it. The sneezing stopped when we changed to Scoop Away. Keep that in mind when you change to a sawdust type litter.

I also scoop daily......I never want my house to smell like a kitty bottom.

On the topic of litter - I will say I was feeling the pinch on my budget and purchased the kitty litter that was on sale instead of the normal brand we use. what a mistake that was - Arm and Hammer multi cat is the worst litter I have ever purchased. I use the A&H litter deodorizer so I thought it would be OK. Its super dusty and the odor control is lacking in a serious way.

I normally use Scoop Away multi cat and then use the A&H litter deodorizer when I scoop, and that combo has worked well.

You do it slowly by mixing old & new until it's all new. Use the clumping litter--that way you are removing the pee completely and it shouldn't smell if you keep it clean. I do a complete change once a month and I have 3 cats with 3 boxes.

I scoop daily (I have two cats, two litterboxs). I use a combo of Fresh Step regular clay litter and tidy cat crystals - the mixture is the best I have found for controling odor - the clay is very absorbant, and the crystals really deodorize - no one can ever tell I have cats in the house unless they come out of hiding!.....

I have tried paper litter, and while it is absorbant, IMHO it's not at all good with odor control......and I complete change out the litter faithfully every week.

Is he drinking enough water? If not his urine will be very concentrated. I scoop at least once a day. If there is a bad odor you should clean more often or get a better brand of litter.

Gee whiz! We clean our litter box two or three times a day, but we have four cats. It's important to get the stuff that sinks to the bottom, not just the stuff sitting on the top.

I tend to clean Sophie's box about once evert 5-7 days. And that keeps the smell down. The apartment or the room it is, barley smells. But it might be the litter I am using? It is called yesterday's news..made from recycles newspaper and is quite absorbant.

I also scrub the litter box with HOT water and odorless dish washing fluid..and my friend who has multiple cats uses a bit of bleach as well
