Eleniki, I have somehow managed to miss this entire thread until now. How frightening for you, but I am so happy that Sumi is finally on the road to recovery. So often we take spaying and neutering as being very routine. But like any surgery, there is always the chance for complications. It is great news that Sumi is doing so much better.

My Windi took out her sutures and didn't seem any the worse for having done it. I took out Willow's to avoid taking her back to the vet, which scares her terribly.

Thanks Skyron - she has indeed pulled one of her two stitches out, and the wound is fine, but the second one is to come out Saturday, and I'll do it myself. She sure isn't going back to {{that place}} just for one stitch!

I'm so glad to hear Sumi is on the mend. How long before they have to get their stitches out? It's been such along time since I've had to go to get stitches removed. They don't ever put stitches in my ferals. Usually there's only one stitch, which the kitties usually have pulled out before they get out of the trap . . .

Luna Bella, reading your post makes me realize how abnormal sumi's post-op behaviour was, and how I should have twigged that she was sick earlier than I did. Luckily she is insured - boy am I glad I decided to go ahead with it after her last illness at only 11 weeks, because the overnight emergency vet alone cost €330 and I don't even know how much my own vet cost, as they deal directly with the insurance people. The emergency vet already cost almost four times the amount I paid for insurance for her for the year. It's kind of strange isn't it, that the operation at our vet made sumi sick, and then we have to pay for them to make her better.... the good news is that she is really on the mend here - she is playing and jumping tonight, though her usually voracious appetite is not quite back yet! Thanks for all the well-wishes!

On the advice of many cat lovers and my vet, I had my two spayed at 4 months. Their recovery time was overnight. By the day after their surgery, they were back to chasing each other and playing just like always.

I did a lot of research on spaying at a younger age. The main reason for doing it as soon as possible is the organs are not fully developed and the surgery is easier on them. The main reason for not doing it is the organs are not developed and there is a chance for a problem. There is always a chance for a problem

Right now, Bella is asleep on my lap while I type this. Luna is at the foot of the bed curled up asleep. They will get up and play for a while, then go to bed until morning -- when they will really romp through the house.

After reading and talking to the vet, I am glad they are through the surgery, recovered, happy, and healthy.

Good luck, from Bella & Luna

sumi is much better tonight, I am so relieved and happy to report! She was perky and interested in exploring the house again for the first time in days, although she is still pretty shaky on her legs, and very thin... She is happy again though - oh how awful it is to see a little cat depressed - cuts the heart like a knife. Thank you all for your support and good wishes for her - see, they really do work!

sumi is snug on our bed again after her 3rd day at the vet's. Vet thinks rise in temperature may be associated with stress of visit, but there is an infection there, and the temperature is also her body's way of fighting it. She has antibiotics for me to give her at home now, so we'll just hope that everything settles back down within the next day or two. She eats when she's at home, but not at the vet's. She also pees at home, but can't at the vet's, then rushes to the box once we let her out of her carrier at home. That does seem to be stress. She's still not herself at all, but the vet says there's no cause for worry in the longterm.

Poor little sumi was very distressed when I brought her back to her own vet this morning. Her temperature showed a rise again, back to 40', so they kept her in, which I was reluctant to allow, because it's so noisy and frightening for a kitten used to a quiet, calm house. They have a small, crowded back area there, with howling and barking constant. She just doesn't understand how I can do this to her. So, more fluids and antibiotic, and painkiller. She's bright, alert and showed some interest in some food, but the temperature is staying at 40' today so far. It's late afternoon here and I'm picking her up in 3 hours or so for the night. I'm praying that her temperature will have come down, and that she won't need another day there tomorrow. The vet says the stressful environment could well be adding to the high reading. They're being vague about what caused this infection, and exactly where it could be. They suggested that sumi may have pushed it into her body through her wound, which she licked and pulled at, but the wound is perfect, clean and knitted already, so I think they're just trying to lead away from the idea that an infection could have been caused by bad hygene during the operation. Please continue your wonderful white light, TDK. Did you know it has been shown in research that sick humans who have had prayers said for them have made better recovery than those who have not? Proof, if we needed it, that TDK power works.

sumi's condition was deteriorating during today; she didn't move from her spot on our bed for 7 hours, seemed unsteady before that when she walked around a little after I lifted her down, refused any further food after I hand-fed her a tiny amount early this morning, bit my hand (then licked it) when I touched her flank, eyes getting dimmer and interest in surroundings less. So we brought her to the emergency vet, a place I hate, but luckily there was a listening vet on, who had time to answer a lot of questions. We had a blood panel done, but it couldn't supply white cell count, so vet had to assume there is infection present, going by elevated temperature (not too high-40'). Results: liver perfect; kidney same: urea slightly low (vet says in keeping with very little food intake over past few days, and reassuringly the other side of what I had feared re metacam/kidney function deterioration). She is also marginally dehydrated, as she would no longer take her syringed fluids for me. In absence of white blood cell count, vet is considering peritonitis, and keeping sumi in tonight. she is treating her with IV fluids and an antibiotic for possible infection. The wound where she took out one of her stitches is clean and healthy, and the vet says she won't even put the missing stitch back, as there is another internal one there. She says we will lose time if we wait til morning to get white blood cell count at my vet, as an infection could bring her down a lot more by then. The antibiotic is Synulox. She is also giving sumi Buprenorphine for her very evident pain. I will ring them in a few hours, and they will ring me if necessary, through the night. I'm picking her up at 6.45am, and depending on her condition, will either leave her at home, or bring her to our vet. It appears that poor baby sumi was unlucky with her spay, and that this crisis is not related to metacam. I will keep you posted. Naturally we are beside ourselves about our baby.

I agree with feral, rather take sumi back. This doesn't sound normal. The longest I've ever had a cat 'down' after a spay was two days, and that was under extraordinary circumstances (she was pregnant, had been stuck in a snare for 3 weeks, and was literally hours away from dying - they spayed her when they repaired the damage from the snare to help ease the stress on her body). You're right to be worried. Take her back.
