I agree with Skyron. Sheba didn't have nearly the hard time when Missy died because it was in my apartment and she saw her body. Sometimes we can't do that if they die at the vet's.

I know this might sound strange, but for me it's important that the rest of the family knows when someone has died. I usually leave their bodies open on the floor for a little while so all the other cats can come by and sniff and see for themselves what is going on. I always bury my kitties in the cemetary in our garden, and I find a lot of comfort in the fact the cats will go and sit right on top of their headstones; they'll just sit there quietly, sometimes for hours on end, and I really do believe its comforting for them and that it is their way of grieving. I've lost 5 of my nearest and dearest cats so far this year, and its been awful, but I hope my experiences can help you in some way. The only one of my boys who is really having a hard time is Shakespeare - his littermate, Hamlet, died in December last year, we've had them for 17 years. All I can say is give them time. The rest of the family move on fairly quickly once they realise what happened. It might be worthwhile to note that Shakespeare didn't get a chance to say goodbye to his brother. He got hit by a car, and we buried him before we thought to let Shakespeare say goodbye. Shakespeare wandered around our house and garden for months, looking for Hamlet and calling out to him . . .

Wait at least two weeks before you get a new playmate. Ernie may think that the playmate drove Burt out of the house if the place still smells very strongly of Burt.

So sorry--that is sad. Not much you can do as he needs time to grieve just like you do. Comfort each other and when you feel it is right get him another playmate.

Time and as 2b said lots of love and attention. Also thoroughly clean the litter pans, food areas, bedding and any areas where Burt may have had an accident. As long as Burt's smell is strong it will seem like he is just in the next room to Ernie.

Sorry that Burt could not grow up with his bro. and for your loss.

Does anyone have experience of comforting a grieving kitten? Ernie lost his little brother Burt last night, and as a new kitten owner (they are 7 months) I could do with some advice! Thanks so much.
