Today marks the one-year anniversary of the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States. After a long primary and general election season, Obama succeeded in becoming the first African-American to be elected president.

Also today in 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a radical Israeli who opposed Rabin's recent signing of the Oslo Peace Accords. This was a major blow to the Middle Eastern peace process and would spur memorials around the world.
