Skyron, Susie gave a great explanation of a drop trap. Here's some more information:

http://droptrapdesign.blogspot.com/

I'm brainstorming how to make one of these here at home, with mostly on-hand materials. So far, it looks like I'd need to purchase netting, a 2'x2' sheet of hardboard, and some hardware if I want to make a fold-up drop trap...

Skyron...I recommend you ask the people feeding her to stop so she'll be hungry enuf to go into the trap for you.
A drop trap is a box made of wire & boards in which you prop 1 end up with a line or rope tied to it. When the ferals get use to eating under it & you have the ones going into it that you want caught, you pull the line(from a good distance away)which in turn drops the box down to trap the animal.
It would probably be easier if you googled the title Drop Trap. I'm not too puter literate. :)

Could you please explain to me what a drop trap is? I spotted a pregnant feral at work today, I spoke to the people from the nursery across the road (they feed her), and they would be happy to continue feeding her if I had her spayed for them. They were very offended when I said I want to get her done before she gets more pregnant. I just feel that it is a way of minimising the amount of unwanted and unloved kitties out there. They almost always end up as road kill. I asked the lady if she was prepared to feed 20+ cats on her property every day, and suddenly she wasn't so offended any more. So I'm going to be hauling out my own trap again tomorrow :)

Well, folks... one down, at least two to go!

The brown tabby was calm this morning in her cage, until I got back out to the lot. She started trembling, but I couldn't tell if it was excitement, fear, or chill (from her shaved belly). Unfortunately, the clinic left on her ID collar, made of a Mylar tape. I got scissors, but there was absolutely no way to cut it off her neck without either scaring her to death or hurting her. I looked carefully, and I believe it's large enough that if she gets it snagged on something, she'll be able to slip out of it.

I set the cage on the ground, in the middle of the lot. She started trying to dash out, and ran into the walls of the cage a couple of times. I waited until she was at least pointing toward the door, and lying down; then I slipped open the door. It wasn't quite fully open when she shot out of there, full speed... ran to the fence a few feet away, squeezed through a hole, and made straight for her territory of disabled cars.

I may not have been able to do much for her... but at least she won't be having feral babies.

At least two more cats are in the yard, including the injured one; all very feral, though the injured one seems a bit less leery than others. I'm going to have to make a drop trap to get them, and get them habituated to the drop trap. They're all very trap-shy.

I'll create a new post when I'm able to make & deploy the drop trap.

Ann...I remember all too well that...OMG feeling I'd get when I'd see,yet another unfamiliar face in the crowd. I can't believe our park has been kitten-free for a year & a half, when I'd finally trapped Hopper & then Hissy & had them fixed. I hope that statement doesn't come back to bite me in the you-know-what!
I know you will catch this little furball in due time & I'm sure it won't take you as long as it took me. I was thinking maybe some of these people that are throwing them food could possibly get closer than you've been able to & catch the little guy/girl? It might be worth asking them for their help.
Until then...{{{HUGS}}} for all your doing to stop them from reproducing. I know too well what your going thru.

Skyron, that would work... except the place where the ferals live is right next door to a good restaurant's dumpster. Even better than the dumpster, though, are the patrons who sit outside on the patio routinely toss food to the sidewalk for the cats. Summary: these cats don't often go hungry.

I can't fault the cats for having found a place that offers shelter and good food... it just means they can be a little fussy about immediately accepting any sort of food in a trap. They *will* go for straight-up tuna or sardines, though.

I admire your determination. I would have gotten P.O a long time ago . . . Have you thought about feeding the kitty up with lots of nice food for a few days in the trap, then leaving her with no food for a day or two, and then feeding her some really smelly food in the trap again? Maybe if she's a bit hungry, she might slip up?

Well, the dark brown tabby was indeed a female with coppery-gold eyes. She is still dazed, but much more alert than most cats are, following surgery. She is recuperating in the large cage. If she seems to be recovering well overnight, she'll be released back to her area tomorrow morning, along with a good helping of food.

For the other feral, I'm thinking the best (maybe only) way to catch her will be a custom-made drop trap, to which she becomes acclimated to eating under. I'll have to see if I can design one, and get it built within the next week or two.

One down... one to go!

The injured feral is very trap-smart. Part of the sardines were eaten, but the trap remains untripped. She remained sitting in the disabled car when I went to check this morning, only 8 feet away from me. Drat! I will have to come up with a good system to trap her. A drop trap may be the only way, and I'd have to get her habituated to it.

The other feral is at SNKC this morning for her spa surgery. She appears less panicked, but still very, very wary of people and her surroundings. Hopefully, she will recover well enough to be returned to the overflow lot tomorrow. I'm 100% positive she'll be relieved to be returned.

Susie, you did such a great job getting both Hopper and Hissy trapped! Not an easy thing with Hissy, that's for sure.

For all I know, the one tabby she got her foreleg trapped & smashed in a similar live trap. (It would certainly explain her being so trap shy.) The good news, though, is that it appears she's eating in the trap. We should be able to get her accustomed to eating in the trap, then spring it one day. The hard part will be persisting until we trap her, rather than the dark brown tabby (who will already have been TNRd). No solution for it but to buy at least 10 cans of sardines, and being more persistent and patient than she.

Ann...I have to chuckle at the image of her pushing the 1 end of the trap out. The old trap I use to use (before some blessed angels sent me new ones) was pushed out the same way by Hopper, allowing him to escape several times. It's ironic that it took me twice as long to catch him tho as it did Hissy. He's got only a fraction of the smarts she does.
Please don't tell him I said that. He's an indoor-only cat now & I wouldn't want him hurting me. :)

One cat is trapped!

It's the small dark brown tabby; I think it's a female. Very feral. She is currently caged in a 2.5' x 3' cage in the basement. We've draped fabric on 3/4 of the cage to reduce any visual stressors for her. She's not happy, but no longer climbing the cage walls attempting to escape when we come in sight. (She was rolling somersaults and clawing like crazy in the live trap; anything to try to get out of the trap.)

We have a phone call in to our local spay & neuter group to find the earliest time we can take her in for spaying, shots & eartipping. I'm hoping they'll be able to see her on Monday or Tuesday. She's drinking water, but seriously stressed by her confinement; refuses to eat dry food at all. I wouldn't put her through this, except we don't want her producing kittens.

She will definitely be released back where she was trapped, about 24 hours after her surgery (weather permitting). She is far too intolerant of human presence to consider any other option. She should survive fairly well, with junked car interiors available for shelter and an endless supply of food from the restaurant dumpsters next door. It's a situation that's far from ideal, I know. But it'll be better if she's not making babies, and it's a good sign that she's learned the street-smarts to survive this long.

After we return her to the lot, we'll be setting up the trap again for the other cat. She's very trap-smart, and I've only got one trap that will work to capture her. (She pushed the end panel open on the other one.)

Before he went to lunch, Glenn reported that the cat is lying in the sun, resting, about 2 feet from the entrances to the traps. The food is untouched. In other words... she doesn't feel comfortable going into the traps, but no way in hell is she going to let any other kitty get at such luscious-smelling food. The darker brown tabby is lingering about, but has had no opportunity to get to the sardines.

Glenn will be checking again after lunchtime.

It's so Ironic...I went outside to see If Hissy was home to eat at all. It's 10 am with the sun shining bright. What do I find? Two young racoons eating up the kibble. It looks like mom may have been trapped by someone else & removed to leave these guys alone. They look to be close to teenage size. My problem...only one trap & If I trap it during the daytime, it will probably have to go to animal control...& then it's sibling after that when caught. I sure hate it when they're paired up like that when I only have the one trap anymore.
