i have 2 litterboxes. one is a standard box with a lid. the other box is the type with 3 trays that you sift the litter. Velvet likes the sifitng litter box because it is lower and she has some arthritis...

The NEW CatGenie 120 is now available. It has a Cat Activation feature which starts the cleaning process shortly after your cat has used the box. The Sani-Solution cartridges now holds 120 washes as opposed to 60 washes with the old unit, or 240 washes if you use the cat activation.

I bought a scoop free about a month ago. It is sitting next to the littermaid. It appears that the cats are using the littermaid more than the scoop free. I would love one of the robot ones but can't afford one of those right now.

I am in a tiny one bedroom apartment as well. I just put it out in the middle of the bathroom floor. Do I trip over it... sometimes yes but I am still getting used to it being there. I definitely think it is worth the money.

Unfortunately in apartments they don't give you much room as they usually design the bathroom so that the toilet and shower are right next to each other and then the bathroom sink/vanity is right up to the toilet. No room for this Cat Genie. :-(

At $300 it is quite expensive but it is great for those of us who do not want to have to deal with removing cat waste and have the room to set one up.

I got a CatGenie for my birthday. My dad is still trying to get it hooked up for me. The T connector that came with it was the wrong size and didn't fit my toilet water line. :( I can't wait to try it. The cats seem to be ok with the granules so far.

THe other one I looked at was suggested by Dragonwing... the LitterRobot. No more scooping but you do have to remove the bag about once or twice a week. And you can use regular litter.

I love my CatGenie!

Pro's:
With CatGenie you don’t have to scoop messy, smelly litter anymore. Also CatGenie uses these plastic granules that are washed and dried that never have to be replaced. I don’t have to buy litter ever again. Not to mention having to spend time everyday scooping the litter box or dragging it outside weekly to dump it and start all over again. All you have to do is simply push a button or you can even set a timer and it will clean automatically.

CatGenie is very environmentally friendly. CatGenie’s washable, reusable granules eliminate the need to buy clay litter, which goes through strip mining which is terrible for the environment The reusable granules also prevent tons of kitty litter from ending up in land fills every year. Granules and Sani-Solution cartridges are both biodegradable.

williamsweyr-he holds it. that cat has amazing sphincter control. If I am running too late though, he'll make his deposit behind the toilet. Occasionally, he will use the toilet on his own, but it is rare. He fell in a couple of times. He's not exactly graceful

Emerson attempted to dig to China through his litterbox. He made a terrible mess. That's one of the reasons I decided to toilet train in the first place.

I cannot get Cato to use the litter box at all, unless there is an emergency. He prefers to dig to china and then he's got to get the spot just right. Can dig and dig until he feels firmly seated. I do not know what it is with that cat. I do keep a litter box for him, but you should see his face if he finds it necessary to use. Elizabeth

Meezermama: Ferrule is lucky he found you. What does he do for relief when you're not home??

Karenopa: Like your camera idea! Could be useful when something crashes and you can't find it! Usually, it's books off a shelf or shampoo bottles in a bathroom. A Cat Genie is a self-cleaning litter system hooked up to power and water (toilet). Sounds like the "Litterfree" system Sharoninaustin described. I'll see if I can find that and the Litter Robot on line for more information. All I know is the jugs of litter are getting too heavy for me to handle and I've gotten too fat since I retired to bend over in my tight litter box space to clean them easily.

Sharininaustin: thanx so much for the info on Litterfree and Litter Robot.

williamsweyr, welcome, love your name and never met a Michigander we didn't like. My hubby, Dragonwing, and I, would like to chime in on automatic cat systems. We have always had multiple cats and we've tried it all. We started out with standard litter boxes and scoops and have tried every litter on the market. I even set up a kiddie wading pool and used a retractable yard rake to clean it. We've worn out several litter maids. As ailuromaniac says, they require extra maintenance, especially if a kitty is having digestive concerns. I can't print here what the hubby says about litter maids. We currently have one Litterfree which our daughter returned to us because her cats wouldn't use it. It hooks up to the toilet and washes on a regular cycle. It's a great product if you can get your cats to tolerate walking on the plastic pellets. One of ours is using it and we think it's the new baby. The solution and pellets are not locally available and must be ordered online.
But at the risk of sounding like a commercial, if you are going to put that kind of money into an automatic system, the most effective and efficient product we use is a Litter Robot. A barrel containing litter revolves after use and deposits the used litter into a drawer that you line with a normal grocery store plastic bag. The clean litter returns to the barrel and once a week remove the plastic bag, tie and toss.
It's only drawback is Bo, who is 17 pounds and doesn't turn around and face out to use it, so he misses on occasion.

the toilet training was a process that went far more smoothly with Emerson. Ferrule just cries for mom at which point I hold him over the toilet to do his business. Pathetic, I know. Emerson handles it like the man cat he is.
As far as Ferrule's name goes, he was a feral cat (same pronunciation). A ferrule is a fitting. So we decided that Ferrule was a 'fitting' name. He also walks around the house saying his own name.

I've just finished medicating Lord Ik Ik for colitis. Unfortunately, this problem caused him NOT to use the litter box which is how I found out there was a problem. With five cats, it's impossible to tell which cat has a problem after the fact, so to speak, just by scooping. I have to have other signs to really get my attention. Maybe I'm just too dense . . .

I've considered a Littermaid, but I guess I'm just cheap..But I feel a little better since I was able to catch worms very quickly about 5 yrs ago..It sounds gross..but a periodic inspection of the litter can give you an early alert to health problems...

Of course now my living room carpet is also history but he could still "treat" my bedroom carpet . . . have to think about it I guess.

I have the Littermaid also, the cats liked it, and they would use it often. Had to take it out though, because their litter boxes are in my bathroom (no place else to put them) and the noise (because I have two that just 'love' clean litter) of it constantly going drove me nuts while trying to sleep. If I had a laundry room, trust me it would be in there in a heartbeat.

I must admit that the Cat Genie is a fascinating concept and I would like to try one but do not have a floorplan that lends itself to the setup and for the present the money to experiment.

I do have a Littermaid and while it works quite well, I have found that you still need some tools for additional maintenance. 4in paintbrush and dustpan for scattered litter cleanup and a 3-4 in putty knife to scrap encrusted clumps from the bottom where kitty tends to concentrate urinating and the scooper for a final cleanup after scraping. Overall I find it less work than a standard litter pan and as I work, the automatic scooping makes the litter last longer. I think the cleaner and well raked litter is appreciated by the cat as well.

My first Littermaid was purchased for Baby. I felt a high-tech mom's kitty should have a high-tech litterbox. I remember my nervous first introduction of Baby to the new arrangement. She sniffed it over and approved the litter by promply using the quiescent device. I counted the minutes for the cycle to run and feared the noise would elicit a rejection of the "INFERNAL DEVICE".

Instead, Baby raced over to the source of the noise and very intently watched the rake make it's pass and deposit the clump in the receptical and return, then repass to redistribute and smooth the remaining litter. As soon as the noise subsided she delicately hopped in the box and signaled her delite by reusing the freshly groomed toilet.

So if a cat likes it it is great. If not then it is like many other electronic toys...religated to the storage until the garage sale.

2BPurring: I also have a LARGE male cat and he refused to used the Littermaid which has been packed away ever the week after it was purchased. Don't think he'd use the Genie either but then it would be in a bathroom and NOT the usual "litter room."

MeezerMama: toilet trained cats??? Lucky you. How did you manage that? I've only known two other people who had cats that used a toilet. They were both one cat homes and one of the cats taught himself! I have a friend that tried to toilet train her first cat. After he accidentally fell in, he'd never go near the toilet again! Maybe I should just resign myself to the continuous task of being a super duper pooper scooper!
