I think fecal exams by the vet are probably the next step. Identifying which cat would be good, but you may not need to go that far if it's some form of infection or parasite. You'd just dose all the cats, not just one (preferred anyhow if it's something communicable).

If all the fecal exams come back clean, I wouldn't rule out irritable bowel or possible food sensitivity. There will be some process-of-elimination (!) steps to take, in order to figure out what's going on. There could be a behavioral component, too, which would require some significant level of observation to determine, especially in a multi-cat household.

Good luck!

Adding another litter pan (covered, if the others are uncovered, uncovered, if the others are covered) might help.

maybe the cats have upset stomaches that make them go poo or (if they have every travled) they migh be getting nervous that a trip is coming. My cats do that sometimes. Also they sell special food that helps cats with upset stomaches.

                           Good Luck!

I can't thank you all enough for your suggestions! I couldn't come up with what we needed to do without your help.
We're going to separate the gang first to identify the offender, and go on from there. I think a trip to the vet will be inevitable. I'll keep you informed ...... in the meantime, if you come up with any more suggestions, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Peace
Ciao!

Maybe one of the cats is terrorizing another and not letting him near the litter box. I've had that problem and had to set Sophie a box where Tess can't get to her. Not to hard in my case since Tess isn't a good climber or jumper. I have trained cats with a problem using the litter box to shutting them in a small space with the litter box etc when they weren't with me. They used the box them and continued to do so even after freedom.

If the stool is loose, it could be a parasite, but if there seems to be a lot of problems with them not making it to the pan, you may have a kitty with IBD (Sweet Thing can get like that). They can give short courses of medicine to calm their insides down, which'll help tremendously.

Until today the poo has been solid (very smelly, but easier to clean up) Today it was like pudding.

What a mess you have to deal with Caddycat. Not too nice finding poop in the wrong places. Smelly too. I agree with paulajeanne about closing them up. Also is the poop runny or solid? If it is runny they may have Giardia which is caused by a small parasite. when I first got my cat Sadie (who had to be given back to the agency four months later because she attacked me for no reason), she had the parasite and then gave it to Sylvester whom I had to give the medicine too for about 10 days. Otherwise, it could be behavioral and they are just letting you know they do not like the new setup. I am sure someone here has better ideas than I.

JenniferSigman -- Actually, no. I've not taken them for shots etc for a while. They're strictly indoor animals and under no circumstances do they venture anywhere where they can come in contact diseases and parasites. What do you think it could be? Maybe I should take them to see the vet?

Good suggestion, paulajeanneMT. That's probably what I have to resort to. My only concern is the yowling and scratching that will go on. The other cats get very upset if one of the others is "crying", but it looks like I'd have to resort to separating them to find out who the problem is.... Thanks!

I wonder if you could try closing them up for a while, one at a time, in say a bathroom with tile, (and a litter box). And see if the problem child makes himself known that way.

Help! Oh-No! Poop again! One of our 4 kits has a problem that I need some help with. I’m not sure which one it is, although I have my suspicions it’s one of our boys. The girls are of a small stature, and the piles are VERY big. The boys were ferule kittens that we adopted from a woman where they were born under her tool shed about 7 years ago. They are huge, fluffy cats with tufts on their ears and fur on the bottom of their feet between their toes. They’re really beautiful kitties.
The problem was occasional at first. It seems that whenever there’s a change in household routine one of our kits presents us with a very smelly pile of poop in places where it’s very hard to clean. I keep 4 litter boxes going that I clean every day. I don’t know if it’s spite or what, but the pile started off a few years ago when we took our suitcases out for a trip. The pile was left in the suitcase. This happened twice, so now we know better than taking them out too early. After that, there would occasionally be a great big smelly pile on the bedcover, on one of the bathroom rugs, or on the rug on the finished basement. I would clean it up right away, but my husband is a bit of a clean freak, so this kind of occurrence really drives him crazy.

Recently the pooping escalated to a new level. I was laid up recovering from surgery that I had at the beginning of August, and Hubby was feeding and cleaning after the kits instead of me. Recently we removed the rug from the basement and replaced it with bamboo flooring and a nice area rug thinking that the wood would be a lot easier to keep clean. (That old wall-to wall carpeting in the basement was old and stained.) That’s hubby’s “Man Cave” now where he watches sports and uses the unfinished part for his woodworking hobby. The food dishes are down there, and the litter boxes are in another area in the unfinished part, not anywhere near the food. The placement of the food and litter boxes has not changed.

The poop seems to have targeted him. (Or at least he thinks so) During my recovery, the poop has appeared several times on the new area rug, on a decorative pillow that hubby used, on the leather sofa, on the afghan (all downstairs) and also on the throw rugs in the bathrooms upstairs (he stepped in this one and threw out very expensive slippers). For the last 2 weeks I’ve begun to take care of the kits again, but alas, the problem is still here. We’re at wits end! I don’t know how to identify the cat that is the culprit, and then don’t know how to eliminate the problem once we know who is doing it! My husband has begun saying that we have to get rid of all the cats. I’m trying to hang in, but I am getting sick of cleaning up the poopies. I need my clean house back. Please help. Any suggestions?????
