Ange, you are doing great! As for DVD's, try netflix for the price of one dvd, you can get the movies sent to you from a list that you create. And books, try yard sales, I get books all the time for .25-1.00 and you would not believe the things you can find. Plus some are books that you wouldn't normally think of reading but find out that they are treasures afterwards. Good luck with everything ;P

I, too, am so proud of you Ange. Doesn't it feel good to know you're on the road to independence? I can't think of anything more satisfying than that! Your stepdad is going to notice the change in you and he'll come around. Meanwhile just be as loving as you can, knowing living under his roof is a temporary situation. And give your mom lots of hugs because it's hard for a mom to know her child is growing up and leaving the nest.

Keep us posted on your progress. We're here for you!

Thank you Emma. I have tried to do my chores early before I leave but most morning I leave by 6:30 am and it's still dark. As of the end of this week I will be mostly sub teaching in Gilroy and Morgan hill so I will get home early enough to do my chores. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice and support.

Hey, sweetie. Congratulations on getting your list together -- you are moving swiftly and surely towards your goals.

Concerning your chores and your stepdad: could you possibly do them early in the morning before you leave, instead of after you get back from work totally exhausted and frazzled? Or if not, could your chores be changed to ones that are more suitable to early hours? This might be a temporary de-fuser and could help with the personality issues.

And my usual signoff: you are in my prayers!

Love,

Thanks GD and TM, You advice, and warm wishes of support or more than enough. GD I also visit the library to get books, as well as browsing the honors section. I have gotten quite a gew DVD's from Blockbuster, I look for specials and sales. As for buying books, I only have four authors I buy books from, so I usually only buy maybe 8 books a year so not too bad, plus I have my Barnes and Nobles membership card which also lowers costs.

I will see what I can find through college sources but not too much free time so, not sure when I will be able to go to my nearby colleges.
Thanks again.

Hi Ange,
First, even if you're no longer in college, you can still go look at the bulletin board there and see what's available. I've done that myself and there was a lot of possibilities.

Also, checking out DVDs and books from a library is a great idea. I used to buy my books and that added up quickly. I just read paperbacks, but I read on average six of them a month at about $8.00 a book - that's almost $50 a month! Now I get them from the library. I also have many friends who give me books they've finished reading. Also, you can get some great deals on books at used book stores. Actually if you bring in your used books, they may let you trade them in for other books, I've done that. At my old job, I started a box where I brought in my old books that I was done reading and encouraged others to do the same. That was great for everyone.
The DVDs at Walmart are inexpensive. You can also go to Blockbuster and get movies starting at $4.99 that were previously watched and save a little there.

As for your medicine, here's what I did. My insurance dropped me, because they didn't want to pay for my medication, which was about $130 a month. I explained this to my doctor, who gave me as many samples as he could. I also asked if he'd be willing to double my dose on the two medications I was taking so I could cut the pills in half and save. He agreed and I cut my cost in half! Now when I go to the doctor and he knows about my having no insurance, he always puts on the bill that my visit was short. I don't know what you call it, but there are different options for him to check off and different rates - I always get the cheapest rate of $55 when I go.

As for the car, I can see that it's neccesary for you to be able to drive. That doesn't mean you have to drive everywhere, though. You can still save on gas by using public transportation to get to some places. I sometimes take the bus to a mall about 25 miles from me and pay just $3.00 for the day pass to get there. Gas would have cost me much more.

Thanks KW. My brother has the same prescription as I do for HBP and he gets his at cosco for less than $10 as for the thyroid I will have to check. I have also sent out my question for medical coverage to the HR at the 2 districts I work at the most to see if they have anything available for subs.

As for my DVD's I only BUY one DVD a month, no renting. I spend the majority of my time these days working until 5-6pm with a 1 1/2 to 2 hour commute home eat dinner, read for an hour maybe (depends on how tired I am) check the TDK site and email. Plus I only buy movies I will watch over and over. Mostly oldies that I had on VHS. (I go to walmart most movies under $10.)

Will keep you posted.

You are doing a wonderful job of taking control of your future, Ange. I am proud of you! Just knowing that you have a plan and a timeline will keep you going until you move out. With the health issues you have, I would hesitate to go without health insurance. Does it cover a significant part of your medication? Do you know what they would cost if you had to pay out of pocket? If you decide to go without health insurance, you might explore getting generic versions of your medications which are effective but can be a lot less expensive.

For entertainment, you might check out your local library to see if it has DVDs that can be checked out, instead of renting them. Keep us posted on your progress!

Thank you all. Yes! I think in that post I was just tring to list for myself what I need to do so I can make another list of things I must accomplish to move out. I also was posting it to see what advice you all had and I was right to. Good and sound advice. I will look into all of them. I will also email off the districts to see if they have any medical plans for subs. If not I will look into local clinics in my area. Not sure there are any though, but maybe. As for the car insurance I just finally paid it off so the insurance price should come down some. But hasn't been too bad only $450ish so I am hoping it drops to at least $350, then I can set aside about $60 bucks a month for 6 months and I will easily be able to cover it so possibly one goal down. I will be calling I insurance company hopefully this week during my lunch break. I just hope we have enough staff this week to do lunch breaks. We've been eating with the children or when they are napping so we still have to supervise during supposed break.

Another suggestions would be welcomed. More heads together always provide ideas we never though of.
Thanks again. And a huge hug for all your support.

Ange, Karin's advice is sound. There may be a clinic that will lower your meds cost. Start tomorrow by calling the Health Department or DFACS, and tell them your situation.

Again, make a list of all the things you must overcome to be able to move out on your own. Then tackle them one at the time. As you cross of one challenge, go down the list and tackle the next one. EAch time you cross off another challenge, you'll feel more empowered and more confident. If you worry about everything at once like in your post above, you'll get discouraged. ONE THING AT THE TIME, Ange. Start with your meds! Make some phone calls tomorrow. Hugs.

Glad to hear it went well with your Mom. Sorry Step-Dad wouldn't stay to listen. I second what Jo said on the fact that once he sees what you are doing, maybe he will come around. If he continues to berate you, you can bring out the list again and say, hey I made a plan that I am sticking to. There is no reason for you to get on my case. Obviously you are unhappy with your life but that is no reason to take it out on me. You knew coming into this marriage that there were children involved.

I would check into finding out if there is a local community clinic where you can get your medications at a lower fee. They ususally work on a sliding scale. Car insurance - you might considered getting the lowest level (I think it is 15,000/30,000 coverage and up your deductible for now (unless it is already high. Consider a deductible of $500 or $750). Also, you might consider checking into any governement subsidized program for your jobs at the multiple school districts. Maybe they have some sort of program.

Good luck. Hugs and purrs.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the support. Right now I think I need to look into medical choices and see if there's a way to minamize them. If not I may just forfeit medical coverage until I get a perm job. I have to cover all dental and eye costs out of pocket. My only concern will be my high blood pressure and thyroid medications. Which I have to keep up on. If I could find a better way to cover medical then it wont be $400 a month so one less cost. I'm not quite sure how else to cut costs to help save money/expenses but I need my car to get to work in multiple school districts which means I have my car insurace(6 mon)/license registrations(1 a year), every 6 month $250-$300 for dental, I don't go out, or shop unless for work clothes or need more comfy close (hate to clothes shop so lucky there) my only usual expense is my Friday night dinner (no one cooks on Fridays but never more than $16-$18 depending on where I eat no fast food maybe why more expensive)(already have to watch my weight and food intake becuase of slow metabolism and family history both sides of diabetis (Spelling?)). So not sure where to cut anymore, my only other vice is an ocassional DVD or book. And I need those as an outlet for stress relief as well as to take me out of the moment for a little while.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Ange, I'm glad to hear you've made a plan! Don't let your stepdad bother you too much. It sounds like he doesn't have much positive to contribute, and you will probably be surprised by how much better your life becomes without having to deal with his negativity on a daily basis, about every little thing.

Good going, Ange! Now find a way to reach your goals. Keep visualizing them and everyday, do some little something to come a little closer to them. Never give up hope. And you'll reach those goals. Your mind will find a way to make your goals become a reality. That's what is meant by the old saying "you make your own reality."

Don't worry about Stepdad. When he sees how serious you are about reaching your goals, he'll come around. Don't let him stop you from reaching for the sky. Your mother is proud of you, if it went over well with her. Just keep remembering that. And don't give up. Bravo, Ange!

Okay list done. Went over well with Mom. Stepdad didn't even stay to listen. He said I'm being stupid becuase theres no way I will be able to move out on my own and pay my bills. So no reason to listen to my sh**!

My current goal is to find a place and move by Jan 21st at the latest. If not back up plan is by late May early June. The sooner the better. I will have to do this on my own because my parents can't lend me any money though my mom has offered without talking to stepdad to continue to pay my almost $400 a month medical coverage through Kaiser. I told her thanks but if I need help it will only be to cover half of it. Don't want to cause the sh** to hit the fan between her and stepdad.

So I have some goals and plans. Will keep you posted on my progress.

Share rentals are the same as roommates. It all depends on how they post their place. Some share rentals just mean that you are renting a room and have priviledges to use the kitchen but not the rest of the place. Other places are share rentals which mean you have roommates who you share the place with. If you find a share rental, you might want to discuss with them all that you are willing to put up with and any rules that might be something to work out with them. Something like no overnight guests, no smoking, etc. Check out www.craigslist.org for listings on apartments, share rentals and roommate listings. Good luck.

Hugs and purrs to you.

Good Evening: Here is another suggestion -- try looking for and/or posting an ad in Craigslist. It is free and you may find something quickly. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/

I agree with you and Jo Karin. I will use this weekend to figure out my goals and then share with my parents. I know Mom will listen and talk but not so sure about Step-dad.
One question is a shared rental the same as roommates?

Thank you again. Love this family. Even though cookies can start load of trouble. LOL! When I need a laugh TGK is there and when I need to talk and share you are all here. Plus I love sharing your stories too whether good or bad and I just love the way that TDK'ers pool to gather there good vibes and prayers for those in need.

You are all wonderful!
Love, hugs, and definitely purrs and headbutts (mind you purrs and headbutts from my future felines). Another strong reason to settle this problem as soon as possible.
