lol, thanks. hes taking the mineral oil for now. hes trying to go so i think its moving on. i did the triangle method, and also a dab of vaseline (paraffin) on his butthole. ive ordered some KMR from the net aswell, hopefully that will do something to help also :o/
Oh while i remember i need to ask about my other cat. shes 5 months and has been our number 1, so as yu can imagine she wasnt impressed with having to share our attention. she hisses at the little kitten and when together she just likes to box him on the head. will she learn to get along with him with time? she dont seem to be spiteful but i do worry about it. thanks

Yes oops, it was not caster oil. It should say Liquid paraffin. Sorry for that, I gave my cat Liquid paraffin at one point from the vets and I could not remember the item. Vets will charge you the earth for it, Liquid paraffin, just go to the chemist and get it for a couple of quid.

I'm not sure where you are located but Walmarts carry the Hartz milk replacer in cans usually in the pet aisle :)

yes its a powdered form. i dont know where i can get the pre mixed stuff from. he still hasnt been but is still very playful so i dont think hes in much discomfort. hes still eating and drinking and taking the mineral oil and de wormer. god i didnt realise raising a kitten would be on par with raising a baby lol. i love having him around though, not sure my other cat will agree just yet though. hes definately not afraid of us, he loves to play and is already making himself at home lol. thanks for the links, will take a look now :o)

Hmmm. I would not go for castor oil, it's generally not advised, as it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and dehydration. Mineral oil, as the vet gave you, is what is often preferred, or a vegetable oil (olive or soy or rice bran etc). I'm not sure what lactol is, is it kitten milk replacement in a powdered form that you make up? If so, that often seems to constipate tiny kittens, you could try sieving it, or switching to a liquid canned kitten milk replacer or going for canned goats milk instead. Also click on the pink tag, poop, and constipation, and orphans, there are loads of helpful links, and you will see what a common problem it is. Not pooping every day is okay but not in four days is a long time, if it happens again, I would take him back to the vet. Plus you could try the 'triangle method' -- there is a video to help.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufFWLmpIu08

I'm not sure why you suggest the kitten is too scared to poop, Fen, why would that cause constipation?

These are great links for raising orphan kittens:

If the cat is suckling or feeding, I would not worry too much, the tiny thing is too scared to let one go. Get a litter tray together and feed the kitten near to the tray. The call of nature will come. if this continues, for say 10-12 days, a tiny drop, 1 to 1.5 ml of Castor oil BP 2 times a day for 3 days,(£2), through a mouth syringe should get the kitten moving. Take cat to vet if this continues.

hi everyone, in very new to all of this. to cut a long story short ive had a little male kitten for a week today, hes seems very healthy considering his background (found on a building site, men said they had not seen mother for over 24 hours and when she did return she didnt bother with chester as we've named him.) well since ive had him he has been very constipated, only pooing every other day to start and now its been 4 days. he went to see our vet yesterday and started mineral oil 3x daily. He was also given some de-wormer as his belly was slightly bloated. today his belly looks to be smaller but still no poo. He seems happy, playful and still wants to eat but i cant help worrying. is there anything else i can do to help things along? his diet consists of lactol that he laps from a bows as and when he wants, i top him up with a bottle just to be sure hes taking enough, and he also has 2-3 helpings of a teaspoonful of mushed kitten food mixed with water which he loves. oh and he pees loads so not dehydrated. hope this helps. thankyou, heidi :o)
