Mama is back on the nest so I can't count them. I really hope the poor girl only has 8 eggs. 9 seems like too many offspring to try to raise. But if there are 9, the sad thing is that there is a probability that they won't all survive to fledge.

Yep! Sound! It hums awfully loud, but I actually heard her chewing at her talon...She stood up but blocked the view so I couldn't count more than 8 eggs. Dad's out of the nest early. I guess laying can really up the appetite. What a good hubby he is! (I hope he's hunting!!)

The eggs take about 30 days to hatch. So the first egg, which was was laid on Feb. 19, will probably hatch sometime around the 20th.

Owlwatcher
I also wonder how many will hatch out! As I wrote before we are hatching chicken eggs in Our class (This is the 2nd year were doing it)
We candled them yesterday we have 7 egg embreos ,4 eggs the shells are to dark and we can't tell and 1 dud. So we will hopefully have 7+ chicks, Unfortunatly we can not get the owl cam to play at work but all the staff are watching it at home and we report to each other!
Again thank you for sharing this site with us!
Peace

I don't believe it! Momma owl now has 8 eggs! I've read that they usually lay 5-7 eggs so this is a lot of eggs for one momma owl. I wonder if all of them will hatch and how many will survive?

Owlwatcher..you're so right about that. The life of a mother owl must be one of the hardest there is. This morning I was looking in on the family and trying to imagine the development of the chicks within each egg. What a complete miracle.
Hi 2b!! *flapping wings wildly*..oops I mean hands..I guess you can tell I spent alot of time checking on the owls this past weekend. Lol!

I don't know the averages but I do know that last year, out of a brood of seven, only four of the owls in the California nest box survived and fledged.

I can't help but wonder what would it be like to have to sit on seven eggs until they all hatched then have to sit on seven tiny little chicks until they got big enough to keep warm for short periods of time by snuggling together? Imagine, having to sit on seven little squirming bodies all huddled together for several days. Then later, trying to keep all seven little squirming chicks, who now have their eyes opened wide and are curious about their surroundings, in one place underneath you so they will all be safe and warm. Never mind trying to feed seven little moving beaks who are all competing for the last morsel of food and making sure all seven get their fair share of the food. I would go absolutely insane if I had that mother owl's job!

She's back..only gone for 5 min. I'll bet after laying all those eggs, she maybe just felt like some light flight! Owlwatcher..do you know what the averages might be for survival of the fledglings? Haha..I definitely think it would be dangerous to snuggle with an owl. I don't blame you for wanting to though. So I wonder if she will celebrate with hubby tonight now that the eggs may all have been layed?

I've just been watching the nest...It's noon west coast..and I had to laugh cause the male was obviously kissing up to momma..maybe wanting some tail...haha..the rodent that he brought in apparently hadn't been consumed because I watched him when it was apparent she wasn't in the mood.. he went to the rear of the nest and picked up the rodent, brought it to her (come on honey...just eat something, it'll put you in the mood) she pecked it away like.."no..I asked for vanilla, not choc." then he proceeded to go ahead and have a snack himself. They really are a sweet couple.
