I agree with KW...Don't second guess yourself..and this other company sounds shaky anyway...I'm mean, to have that high level of a position and have it a temp. position..doesn't sound right...alot of big corps these days are playing games with certain positions to avoid a handing out benefit packages...your time will come...and I think you will know without question when it is right!!

Don't second guess yourself, S&MM. All the reasons that led you to turn the job down are just as valid now as they were before your dream. What might have been could very easily have been not getting hired at the end of the three month temp position. Something more solid will come along. :)

Last night I had a dream about the job. I am sitting here this morning wishing I had taken the job. I think it would have been the career boost I was needing. Darn double darn. God gives me opportunities and I go and blow them. Nothing I can do now.

Apparently the temp agency isn't checking their emails. They just left me a voice message stating that they hope all is okay and that I will be at the temp assignment tomorrow. I am afraid to call the number they left to let them know over the phone as I know they are going to bully me on the phone. I know they will be in a for a bad surprise on Monday when they get a call from the buffer agency asking where I am.

I think you made the right decision. And remember, you can still make Executive Assistant money without the title if you have a good boss. Because of the way our department is structured, there is only one Executive Assistant and she's in NY. She works for the guy who's my boss's boss. However, my boss was nice enough to reward me with Executive Assistant pay without the title. I'm still a Sr. Admin. Assist in name, but an Executive Assistant in pay. It doesn't happen as rarely as you might think. Just something to keep in mind. Keep your head up, hon. It'll happen. ((hugs))

I am in a decent job with a good boss (he gave me his frequent flyer miles to pay for my ticket to Florida and did get me a merit raise of 26 Cents an hour even though I have only been there a short while) and so I decided to stay and make it work. I have good camraderie with my fellow workers and can work through the kinks that happen from time to time. I have a decent commute and the office is in a good area with restaurants and all that. My dream job was the temp job I gave up which was to work one on one for a high level VP with a salary to match the level of the position. I now know that I can achieve this position with the right boss. I sent an email to the VP to let her know why I am turning down the opportunity. Hopefully she will consider me when she is ready to hire permanently (although at this point she may just decide since I turned down the temp position on short notice that she may not want to even consider me - her loss at this point). I will reassess in 2009 on how things are going at my current employment.

SMM, you're interested in this company, and you've worked there before. Maybe someone in the universe is helping you get just what you want, by making you think of "another way" to get it; try to get in touch/keep in touch with some of the colleagues you met when you were working there before. That gives you an "inside track" to what's going on with the company. And, meanwhile, don't completely rule out promotion with your current employer. Someone may quit, or get fired, or there may be an expansion or acquisition, you never know.... Just keep your eyes on the "prize" and you'll get it sooner than you think, I can tell....

You are right, KittyMom but I keep thinking about the huge salary and the career boost that I am giving up. It really sucks that if that happened back in April 2007, I would have taken the risk and snapped up the job in a second. I would have taken the job because I wasn't working. Why does it have to happen now that I am working? Someone in the universe is playing with me and it isn't any fun for me. If I didn't have any bills, I would have taken the risk. As it is, I cannot afford the risk right now. Darn double darn!!!

It is hard turning down a Senior level Executive Assistant position that pays very well but cannot take the risk of not having a job in three months. I have worked in a different department at this biotech back in Feb 2007 where they informed me that even though I had done exempilary work, but still informed me that they couldn't offer me the permanent job. I cannot risk this again when I am now living alone and do not have someone who might be there for me to fall back on. The whole experience really sucks!

I am not going to take the temp job. Any temp agency that threatens me with black balling me is not worth working for. The biotech uses a buffer agency to deal with all the temp agencies. My agency is saying this buffer agency would black ball me and not allow me to work there ever again. I think that is both unethical and doesn't sound legal to me. So I am to risk it and not take the job. As KW says, I am going to stay where I am to build my resume with a position that shows I stayed for an extended period of time. I think it best to reasess everything in late 2009 early 2010. If I want to work for the biotech company, I apply directly for permanent jobs as I didn't want temporary in the first place.

Much good advice here! You have a tough choice to make. It depends on how much risk you are willing to take and able to afford. Staying where you are builds your resume in terms of staying in a job for an extended period of time. If you don't want to risk taking a temporary job in the hope that it will become permanent, tell the agency you are only interested in permanent employment and don't interview for temp jobs.
If you take the temp job and don't get hired permanently, would you be able to get unemployment benefits to tide you over until the next job? Is going through your temp agency the only way the biotech firm hires?
Very tough call, but nice to know there is interest in you at the firm you'd rather be working for. Good luck!!

Like others have spoke before me...If there are any unsettling doubts, your better off staying put. I would also steer clear of any agency that would stoop to intimidation tactics to get you to take a job. In your heart, I know you will know what to do Karin. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

One other thing you might consider: If you decide to take this temp position, the VP you'll be working for will probably have quite a bit to say about who her/his assistant will be when the position is permanent. So, if you get along with the boss....

Time for an END RUN. You have worked for this company before. There should be some people inside you could approach directly about positions in the company. Use a direct approach to acheive a direct hire if you want to work for this biotech firm.
Regardless of if you take a direct approach to taking employment with this company, sever your dealings with this temp agency and find another.

What is interesting, HM, is this current assignment is at the same company where I had that temp to no perm experience. After I was told I wasn't going to be hired, I couldn't get another assignment at the company through the agency I was working with even there is always temp assignments. So this is why I am really leaning to not taking this assignment.

You have to be careful with temp jobs, Karin. I've been at my job for 12 years, but I was a temp for TWO. Granted, I didn't stay in the same department for those 2 years, I've practically worked all over the bank. But when I first came here, I was told my job was going to be permanent, only to have them tell me later that even though my work was stellar, they didn't want to hire a temp, they wanted somebody from 'inside' the bank. After that I wound up in the legal department where I knew I didn't want to be permanently and I stayed there probably a month. I went to the fraud department for awhile, went over to the trust department and then I wound up in collections. That's where I was hired. I stayed in that department for about a year (I wanted my foot in the door, but I did NOT want to be a collector) and then went over to EFT for 4 years and then took the job I have now, and have had since 9/11/2001. I don't trust anything temp agencies tell me after the experiences I've had with them. All I can tell you is I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.

Okay, just spoke with the temp agency and they said they have seen some of their temps go perm within 3-4 weeks at this company. Now, I have heard this kind of talk before when I was a temp. I worked at a temp assignment where the position was suppose to be a temp to perm position. After being there two months, I asked how I was doing and they all said I was doing great and they were very happy with me. Then a week later, there was a situation where I told one of the project managers that I had to take care of something for the associate director before I could take care of the project manager. Well, after that occurrance I was told I was informed that I wasn't being considered for the position as they felt I was no longer a "team player".

I wonder how it would look to the VP if I was to contact her directly and let her know that even though I would like to take this position, I cannot take the risk of not having a job in three months but that I would like to be considered when she is hiring for a permanent position.

I'd say don't do it--with the economy the way it is right now, there's no telling what will happen in three months. No benefits at new/temporary job for 3 months? When you add in the costs of the benefits you have now, is it still more money than paying out of pocket for a medical emergency? Why not stay at current job and then tell other VP to interview you at the end of the 3 months?
