Hi Karin! I remember that catch-22 situation from when I graduated from SFSU. I had gone back to school and so I was 34 when I graduated. I was terrified that I was never going to get a job because everyone wanted someone with experience. Fortunately, there were a few companies that routinely recruited at the universities and I managed to get a job through them, but it took 6 months. You guys just hang in there - the right thing WILL come up, and it will have been worth the wait!

Hugs, purrs and headbonks to you and Sylvester!

Rubia, you are a very brave person to move to a foreign country with a new husband. I am glad your life has worked out so well. I would love the opportunity to go live in England, Ireland or Scotland but would need to visit those countries more to make sure the move is a good one. My husband has a Masters Degree in Finance but cannot seem to land a good job here in the SF Bay Area. Everyone wants someone with 3-5 years of experience but you cannot get experience unless you work the job...and you can't get the job unless you have experience. Very catch-22 situation. So he drives for a specialized car service till he can land something.

Hi Pipa's Mum - Thank you! I don't know why you say you feel so old. You are cetainly very accomplished yourself! And at only 32 you are just approaching your prime! I was very dull for a long time, but then I guess I a mid-life awakening when I was 45(I don't really feel it was a crisis!). My ex never liked to go anywhere or do anything and could be very grumpy on top of all that - PLUS he didn't like cats! Around that time, my role at work changed and I met people from all over the world (including the Spaniard who gave me my nickname!) and I realized that I was really missing out on life. I figured that if I didn't do something about it then, I probably never would. I left my ex, and eventually got together with the guy who is now my husband. Yes - moving to Europe was pretty terrifying, and I really was taking a chance. If the relationship didn't work out... well it doesn't bear thinking about! So, it has only been since I've been living here that I've started really doing things - like the diving and the motorcycles. So - look at all the kinds of things you have to look forward to! :-)

Purrs & headbonks to you, Polly and Melon

Hi Dorie & Artistabobbi - Yeah - I like this new forum that gives each of us chance to get to know each other better.

I was born in NYC, but we moved to the suburbs just outside of the city when I was 3. I was 14 when my parents and I moved to San Diego after my dad retired. Later, my first husband & I moved to the San Francisco area. It was there that I eventually met my current husband - which is how I ended up in the UK.

Tikka is named after an Indian curry dish! She was one of a litter of 3, and the guy who adopted her brother named him Fifa (a football (soccer) association) because he loved football so much. My hubby is also a big footy fan, but I told him that no way were we going to name our kitten UEFA (another football association). We were discussing this over our regular Friday night curry, and were trying to think of other things that we really liked. Well - it was sitting right in front of us - Chicken Tikka Masala!

I am an American, but have been living in the UK now for nearly 9 years. I moved to the UK so that I could be with my current husband - his kids were still fairly young at the time, and he did not want to be half way around the world from them. I am over 50 (What??? Surely there has been a mistake!) and currently I am a software developer, but in previous lives I worked as a dental assistant and an accounting clerk. I enjoy reading, am a member of a scuba diving club (although I haven't dived in over a year due to health issues), am learning to ride a motorcycle and am trying to learn golf! And, of course, I love cats! We have just the one cat - a black kitty with just a touch of white on her chest - called Tikka. She is a cheeky little thing and she always keeps us on our toes! And of course - she really is the one in charge around here!
