I am so sorry ILMC. Know that Pete is pain free and running with my Heidi. She was GS mix. No clue what she was mixed with, but she was the sweetest, most gentle dog. Time will help soften the rough edges of pain.

ILMC, I'm thinking Goober needs a furry furriend, maybe a kitty? He sounds so sad and it might be very good for him, and you. Read the diary on Hootie in catster. Click on Hootie's Mama pink name. We are so glad that we took in Oliver for Sammy.

Thank you for all of your kind words and being so understanding. I hope in time things will get better. Karenopa, I extend my sympathies to you for your beloved Abby. May time also help to heal your heart as well. In all my grieve I forgot about another family member who also seems to be having a hard time adjusting to Pete's passing and that is Goober..my orange kitty. Goober and Pete always seem to have this love/hate relationship. Goober would never go in the pen but after Pete's passing he has gone in several times and looked for him..then he comes out and sits by the gate and meows for the longest time.
My Goober cat has never been very vocal so this is really heartbreaking to hear him cry like that. I would have never thought the bond between this 8 lb. cat and 100 lb. dog would have been so strong....amazing how all creatures love in their own special way.

ILMC..My heart joins in your pain. I too said fairwell to my dog Abby exactly one month before Pete. I also have her son who is 11 yrs. and it's been a day to day process. Our wonderful memories lighten the pain and also knowing she no longer hurts. Let your wonderful memories be your healing force. *I have such a soft spot for German Shepherds..my father once was a breeder of them*. Peace to Pete in his final reward. I too added a candle in his memory.

I'm so sorry for your loss ILMC,I still remember two German Shepherds that I grew up with with great affection. I was 8 years old and Shepherds are supposed to have the capacity of an 8 year old child. That's pretty much all I remember from that time, playing with and having fun with those exceptional dogs.
You took wonderful care of dear Pete and you will see him again.

German shepherds are such wonderful dogs, and your friend was blessed with a long and happy life. In spite of that, and because of that, the loss of such a dear creature is heartbreaking. I know you must have taken very good care of that sweet dog.

Please give yourself time to grieve, dear, and now you must take very good care of yourself. Grief is not something we get over; we just go through it. Takes time, takes energy, and you are in my prayers.

Pete is running with Chester right now, and Daisy and Roo and all the other furrbabies are racing with him. Heaven is a merrier place with him there.

My neighbor is a breeder of German Shepherds, and whenever he is out of town, I feed them for him. They know me and are a great bunch. My neighbor's favorite dog, Bobby (we called him "The Fridge", because he was black and very big just like William Perry) developed a terminal condition and had to be put down in his prime years. That was last winter, and my neighbor is still heartbroken over it. He does find solace in his other dogs though (when I was last there a few weeks ago, he had 9 adults and 4 puppies).

All the dogs have such great personalities! The best one is Emmie--too old to breed now, but too good to let go. She's such a sweetie. There's Sumo, the big male, who loves to jump for joy whenever he's fed. There's crazy Kimmie, who has to tip over her bowl and eat off the floor. Santos wants to play "alpha male," but he's such a love lush! And Karly--you have to place her bowl oh so carefully, because if she sees another dog out of the corner of her eye (never mind that each dog is in its own individual kennel), she snarls and growls to beat the band!

Now look what you did, ILMC--you got me waxing poetic about dogs, of all things. I'm not even a dog person! Ooh, you're a slick one ILMC!

BTW, what part of TX are you in? I'm just west of Houston.

I haven't been able to visit the site very much lately and sometimes do alot of lurking. I have asked for advice here that has been very helpful. For the past 2 weeks I have been caring for one of my best friends..a German Shepherd name Pete...on Friday the 27th at 4:00 he passed away. The vet came to the house and he passed on in his favorite place. He didn't suffer and Friday was his worse day so it was a blessing that they came then. He was 12 years 1 month and 1 day old. The vet said that was exceptionally good for a shepherd of his size to live that long. I realize how lucky I am to have had him that long and I know he is at peace now...but I miss him so much. The mornings seem to be the hardest. He left behind a life long companion...a Golden Retriever mix..named Pumpkin. She is 11 years old and has spent all her life with him. We are learning to adjust together with this loss and seem to comfort each other as much as we can. I know time will heal this hole in my heart but right now it seems almost impossible to think of life without him here. I guess I am writing this as maybe part of a healing process...to share with people who understand the loss of not only a pet but a loyal friend who loved unconditonally...Thanks for listening.
