I have been waiting to find out for sure if Lynx's other family would return to claim him before I started to think of him as my cat. But they have been gone for at least two weeks now and have not returned for any of the cats that they left behind.

I am now looking for a way to get Lynx neutered and vaccinated. Problem is that I literally have no money to afford this thanks to my bank ripping me off for over $130 last month. So I will be spending the next few days in search of agencies that can help me with this.

Another problem is that Lynx has become increasingly unpredictable. One minute he will be so sweet and cuddly, the next minute he will swipe at a person then run off. One minute he and Shiva will be getting along and the next minute he will be stalking her, looking for a fight. Poor Shiva is afraid to go outside with him out there. But she does her share of starting the fights too - it's just that he is much stronger that she is, and she does not stand a chance when he decides to attack her. I am hoping he will settle down once he is neutered. Otherwise, Anthony and I will have to be very vigilant to protect Shiva and to keep him from attacking us.

Either way, he is now my big baby boy, and I am happy to have him.

owlwatcher_974 on "Shiva is taking over my bed!"

You might remember the problems I had right after Mamma Kitty passed away. Shiva was refusing to eat anything that was given to her, and would meow constantly then go insane tearing through the house if we did not keep putting different things in her food dish for her to turn her nose up at.

Well, the food situation has been dealt with. She still meows non-stop if she wants something - like to be let out late at night when it is time for her to stay in the house for the night. But the going insane, refusing to eat, and keeping me awake seems to have been dealt with.

The problem I have now is that Shiva wants my bed. Over the summer months, I sleep on an air mattress out in the living room because it is much cooler than my bedroom. At first, Shiva slept on the other side of the airbed where I had placed towels under the sheets to protect it from her claws.

Now that the weather is cooler, I have put a blanket over where Shiva was sleeping. At first she loved that blanket and slept on it all the time. But for the last couple of nights she has insisted on sleeping right up against me so that I cannot even move. No matter how many times I move her, she still gravitates back to me.

I thought it was because she likes sleeping close to me, but this morning after I got up, she insisted on sleeping in the middle of the blanket and sheet that I sleep with! I move her onto the other blanket that she use to love sleeping on, but she goes right back to my spot where the mattress is not protected with towels.

I can't make her move - I go over to push her over to her side of the airbed, but one look from those sweet, innocent, adoring eyes and I just can't do it.

What am I going to do when I move back into the bedroom? I cannot let her sleep on the bed in there.

Hello again. My kitten, around 5 weeks old, had been feeding on Whiskas tuna in gravy pouches, yet after a visit to the vet today, she was given Hill's dry food for kittens. Bad thing is that she won't go NEAR Hill's, not even sniffing it let alone eating it, but still going crazy for the Whiskas pouches. Wetting the dry food does not help either, though she already can eat dry food. Tried mixing Whiskas wet and Hill's dry, but she just picks out the Whiskas bits, not touching the rest. Now I've been researching online and there are so many conflicting ideas on this, some say Hill's is good quality, others say it's poor quality, some favour dry food while others favour wet food, I really have no idea! And after paying the Hill's around 5 times the money I had to give the vet, this is all the more sad. What should I do?

Ok, so my kitty is a year and a half old and I got her when she was 8 weeks. She has always been a bit of a nut but I figured she would eventually calm down. WRONG! She's getting worse as time goes on! I can't take it anymore. She drives me NUTS! I love her so very much but holy cow! We play with her everyday and give her lots of love when she lets us. She is a tempermental princess and only wants to be pet and loved when she feels like it otherwise she bites (not hard, but just like a "back off" nibble).

Whenever we sit down to relax or eat, she goes crazy. She plays with the blinds, even if I leave them half open. I left them wide open all summer but it lets the heat out now that it's cold so I really can't do that. She refuses to stay off the kitchen table and knocks cups of water over all the time. We finally got her to stop going on the counter MONTHS ago but all of a sudden her new thing is to jump up there! She also refuses to cover her poop. She poops, jumps out and walks away leaving the whole place stinky. She was spayed a year ago. I am getting sick of the bad behavior! It almost seems like she does it on purpose to annoy us.

I am seriously considering making her an indoor/outdoor kitty but I am afraid to. She has her claws (which I forgot to mention she uses on all of our furniture!!!) and is a tough little cookie but I worry about her getting killed or lost :( I have tried everything... spray guns don't work on her (I think she thinks it's a game) and loud noises don't scare her. I don't want to be mad at her anymore! Help :(

Hi, all... I volunteer, rescue, help the shelter...
I have a foster kitten (&sibling) that was originally put in with a surrogate momma kitty but I took them to bottle feed them because they were being neglected/pushed away (there were 10 kittens to this 1 momma!). One kitten has done well but the other has been on antibiotics on/off her whole short life of about 8wks for URI, snotty nose. We've gone from Amoxicillin to Clavamox. I found out one/some of the 10 kittens has Herpes. I have another foster kitten about 12wks & have had to start him on the clavamox, too. They are kept in separate cages, but are near. Luckily, my own cats are ok... She's almost done with the Clavamox & I would've expected her to be getting better but she's just the same as when I started it. She's eating & playing well, but I feel bad because I can't let them out to play & socialize & the sibling that's well is showing signs of unsocialization. I've done a little research & suggestions are to give powdered lysine, get a Leuk. test, go back to the Vet & get a stronger antibiotic called Azithromycin. Any thoughts? Thanks!

So I have a 5 week old kitten whose mom abandoned her (she may have died on the road because the kittens were near a main road). As all kittens are, she is very needy but I was thinking about how at night she really doesn't want to sleep alone. After the past 4 sleepless nights, this morning I found what I think may do the trick, at least for a while. I stuffed a sock that she's been sleeping on that smells like my boyfriend and stuffed it with a pillow case I always use and Ryan's underwear (she slept in them the first few days she was here sometimes).

Right now she's in her bed snuggled up against this sock mommy. Any experience with faux mommas? Any thing that's worked before? We really don't want her to get into the habit of sleeping on the bed as we are both allergic to cats (that doesn't stop us from having her though she's the best!)

So far so good, she is bumped up against the "mommy" and snoozing after a long morning of play, since she got her mommy up at 6:30am and woke her up 3 times in the night wondering "Why aren't we playing? you guys are boring!" lol Just let me know what you guys think/do! :]

Well, Pickle has had her day at the vets and is now back home zooming around like a lunatic. I caught her quite easily and took her in Thursday evening. She had her operation first thing on Friday morning, and they rang me at 11.30 to say all was well and she was waking up nicely. I was allowed to pick her up any time after 1.30, but because of w**k couldn't get there until nearly 5.00. I paid the bill (ouch!) and the receptionist told me to take a seat. I waited and waited.

After quite a while the receptionist came back and said "They're just trying to get Pickle out of her cage and into her basket". I asked her if they wanted some help, and she said she'd ask. A few minutes later the nurse arrived and asked me through to the consulting room. She went through the post-op checklist with me, but confessed she hadn't been able to put Pickle into her basket. (I had warned them that she is rather wild!)She asked me if Pickle "has always been like that." So I explained her history. "Oh", said the nurse, "Perhaps I ought to have put her back in her own basket while she was still dopey".
Anyway, I offered to put her into the basket myself. The nurse took me through to the cat section of the hospital and there was Pickle sitting up in her cage looking very alert and perky. I was really pleased with the way she responded to me. She obviously recognised me and when I opened her cage she only cowered down at the back and hissed at me. When I grabbed her she made no attempt to bite or scratch me, and she went into her basket with no trouble at all.
She came home and was immediately back to her normal lively self. She's eating well and doing everything a kitten should - apart from being cuddly that is.

After a lot of debate, and a lot of tears, my family and I came to the conclusion that Flower must go back to the shelter. I made sure she is worm-free, flea/tick-free, got all her shots, was as fat as a kitten could possibly be (she looks like Mumble the penguin from happy feet . . .). So a lady from the shelter came to collect her; we explained that as much as we would love to keep Flower, we simply cant afford to keep another cat. And then the lady told us that one of my previous foster babies is still at the shelter. He's been there for 4 months now. His name is Stumpie (he only has a stump, no actual tail to speak of). I raised Stumpie from the age of 2 weeks. My whole family agreed with me when his litter went up for adoption that if he didn't find a home, we would all love to have him back (he's quite a character, will put him on catster). So Stumpie is coming back on Saturday. I feel like I've totally betrayed Flower?? It's always so hard to let go of the foster babies if I've really had to fight for to keep them alive; Flower was almost dead when she came to me. They form such a strong bond with me - it's like they know I'm the reason why they are still alive. I'm going to rot in hell for this. It's so messed up. I let one kitty go, just to get another one . . .

I figure today's a good day to open up the roller rink for breakfast this morning; the snack bar is cooking up some goodies, and the pro shop is open if you need to modify whack-bonk sticks to get the health insurance industry off their @$$e$ and start paying for treatments people need. On the menu is apple/chicken sausage, beef sausage, kielbasa, bacon, steak (no filet mignon [sorry]; it's round steak), croissants, scones, muffins, buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, grass-fed eggs, grits with butter and red-eye gravy, oatmeal, brown rice with raisins and maple syrup, Cream of Wheat, fruit juice, tea, coffee, and vegetable juice blend. Pumpkin's taking it easy; she had been sneezing for the past few days, but now it seems she's back to normal. There will be 'mommy music' (Cheesy Listening) playing on the sound system until I can figure out where Pumpkin hid the fun music. If we have to go to Chicago to make sure Amy (MollyCat) gets the best in medical care, so be it.

Hi family. I'm just back from the vets. Chris is out, and I'm trying to take in everything they've just told me.

Harry has severe, advanced heart disease. Because it's currently being complicated by his respiratory infection, they can't yet say if he's in heart failure, but the x-ray showed his heart is 50% bigger than it should be, and the scan showed his heart muscle walls are measuring 8.5mm in places (under 6mm is normal, over 8mm is serious).

I have to monitor his breathing over the next few days, dose him with the diuretics they've given me and some tablets that will help regulate the blood flow in his heart. He has a follow up appointment next week, when, if the fluid has reduced enough, they'll start him on beta-blockers. Assuming we get through all this, they'll repeat heart scans every three months. Worse case scenario is we might not even still have him in three months...

I think Chris and I need some hugs, and can Harry have all your prayers and white light, and a few gentle scritches?

I was playing with Finn yesterday and noticed he kept licking his lips, like he had something stuck on his tooth. He then started using his paw to rub against his jaw, so I tried to take a look. He was pretty defensive about the area, but I finally got a look and saw some redness, as well as what appeared to be a new tooth. His old tooth was still there, but seemed like it was damaged. I thought it would just work itself out, like mine did when I was a child, but after a day and night of eating dry food and chewing on toys, it's still there.

Will it just come out eventually, or might it cause a problem?

Thanks, as always we'd be lost with out y'all.

Any advice here? We have sister kittens who are currently 7 months old. I just know they will try to tear up the Christmas tree when we put it up and they are left out in that living room/kitchen/dining area when we sleep.

What has worked for you?

ETA: We have a lovely, expensive, pre-lit artificial tree.

So we are thinking of having a third child and I told my husband about the whole thing about pregnant women not changing the kitty litter. Well he was like I'm not changing the litter you'll have to get rid of them. I'm not sure if he was joking or not, but what are your alls thoughts on this? My cats do not go outside nor do they eat raw meat. Plus you can get this toxo blah blah from mishandling meat, so don't I have just as much risk cooking as cleaning out the litter?

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Nov. 5, 2009

Media Inquiries: Rita Chappelle, 301-796-4672, rita.chappelle@fda.hhs.gov
Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA
FDA Health Alert for Certain Pet Treats Made by Pet Carousel
Products may be contaminated with Salmonella

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing this health alert to warn consumers not to use Pig Ears and Beef Hooves pet treats manufactured by Pet Carousel because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were distributed nationwide in both bulk and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores. Pet Carousel is based in Sanger, Calif.

The products were manufactured under conditions that facilitate cross-contamination within batches or lots. Although no illnesses associated with these products have been reported, the FDA is advising consumers in possession of these products to not handle or feed them to their pets.

The affected pig ear products were packaged under the brand names Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel. The affected beef hooves were packaged under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley’s, Doggie Delight, and Pet Carousel. All sizes and all lots of these products made by Pet Carousel are included in this alert.

During September 2009, the FDA conducted routine testing of pig ears made by Pet Carousel. The test results detected a positive reading for Salmonella. This prompted an FDA inspection of Pet Carousel’s manufacturing facilities. During the inspection, the agency collected additional pet treat samples. Further analysis found Salmonella present in beef hooves, pig ears and in the manufacturing environment.

Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. People handling dry pet food and/or pet treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the treats or any surfaces exposed to these products. Consumers should dispose of these products in a safe manner by securing them in a covered trash receptacle.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their health care provider immediately.

Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only experience a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

The FDA will continue to investigate this matter to determine the source of the Salmonella contamination and offer updates as appropriate.

Consumers can report complaints about FDA-regulated pet food and pet treat products by calling the consumer complaint coordinator in their area. You can locate the nearest consumer complaint coordinator at:

Well, it's official. The US, the UK and NZ are in a recession. I know that lots of us are dealing with financial difficulties...some much more than others. But I bet that most of us are tightening up the purse strings. I thought it might be helpful (and fun!) to have a corner where we can post some of our favorite budget-friendly tips and ideas. Do you have energy-saving advice? Maybe a low-cost recipe? Any frugal tips involving pets? Post them here!

I will start it off with the latest Wal Mart freebies. The forms are very quick and easy to fill out and the products always arrive...and NO spam afterward! New offers are usually added every few days. For the freebies that you can't personally use, there is always a pet shelter that will accept the pet freebies and a women's shelter than will accept freebie baby products.

at 2pm on Fort Hood, Texas Thursday the 5th, there has been a shooting. 7-9 killed and 20-over are injured. Fort Hood has been sentenced on Lockdown, and the killers have still yet to be caught. It's been said that they are in uniforms and are soldiers.
I advise if you have anyone of Fort Hood base, to check on them if need be.
