Troubleshooting new user problems

  1. Thought I'd try starting a new thread devoted to questions about how to navigate the chat forum.

KathyinVA asked about how to change a password. I stumbled on the solution by clicking on my member link (right under my screen name) and going to the edit page. Just enter the new password twice and you are in business!

The biggest adjustment for me is not being able to use "reply to comment" as we can in the blog section of TDK. I think the solution may be to start a new thread........?

  2. This is the kind of feature we'll introduce as time passes, as we make sure that the site can handle it. Remember, there was no 'reply to comment' feature on the main TDK site for a long time...

  3. Thanks, KM. I wasn't trying to rush you into tweaking the site. This is a wonderful change and I'm sure we'll get the hang of it by practicing. :-)

  4. Kittenwhisperer: Yep, noticed the same thing. BTW, I had already answered Kathy. Multiple answers and questions will be some kind of issue for now.

  5. Now I know I'm probably being a bit thick here, but can someone do a quick tutorial on what a tag is and when I might use it? Ta!

  6. MCW: It is one or more words that describe the topic of a thread. It is in addition to the title you give a new thread.

  7. OK--Kittenmaster: Miu and I seem to have different views about what a tag is. Would you clarify, please? :-) (I love having the ability to edit my comments. No more typos!)

Posted 4 years ago by Kitten Whisperer #

  8. Miu - I've deleted your comments because you're thinking of tags as HTML, which is normally right, but the're not in this case - they're more like keywords.

Think of it this way: if you were writing a post about catnip, then you could enter 'catnip' as a tag - this would enable others looking for information on catnip to find your post more easily.

  9. Kittenmaster: I got my tags covered! :) One request - could you reverse the comments? If the newest and therefore most relevant comments would be first it would be easier to keep updated.

  10. Miu: I don't think that makes sense, because anyone who isn't up-to-date is faced with a thread where everything is in the opposite order to the way the conversation originally took place.

  11. *Thoroughly confused, but still eager to learn* - wouldn't I just call a new thread catnip? Don't quite get the difference, sorry!

Posted 4 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  12. Yes, you could do that, and you probably would. This is just another way of tracking what people are talking about on the site.

Posted 4 years ago by The Kittenmaster #

  13. You certainly could. An example for this thread is the title "Troubleshooting new user problems" and the tag "troubleshooting." oops--sorry to step on your toes, KM!

  14. I'm sure I'll get there with a bit of trial and error!! Thanks KM.

  15. KM, will we be able to get our user names back to their original form rather that all compacted?

  16. I'll see what's possible - I agree it's not ideal!

  17. PLEZ HALP! I registered this morning and was able to comment on the handsome little kit Tin-Tin. My problem is I can't figure out how to get back to comment about the daily kit. It says I have to login but I'm already logged in. Do I get one comment a day? Will I have to stay in lurkerdom, never to post another whitty and/or lame comment again? Smoochie smoochies and Aloha Fridays must continue. Thank you Kittenmaster, King of Kittens and fellow TDKers. Any advice and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  18. Teresa: if you can post here, you should be able to post in the normal place: what happens if you click on the 'Back to the main site' link at the top of this page, then on the name of the top kitten? Can you comment?

I'm not sure if this will help! Go to the top of this page and click Back to main site! Try from there! Hope this helps

  20. I'm pretty sure KM wouldn't limit us to one comment per day on the main TDK blog area. I noticed that when leaving the chat forum to go to the main site, I am automatically logged out. Have you tried logging in again on the main TDK blog area? Wish I could be of more help.

Sorry, KM. I thought you might be off for the night.

  21. Kittenmaster-I followed your, Dorie's and KittenWhisperer's instructions and was able to get to the comments box on the main page. I tried again and was unsuccessful. I tried loggin in at the chat room and on WordPress. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I also get automatically logged out like KittenWhisperer. After a bit, I'll try again. We'll get it figured out. Thanks for answering me in the early morning hours. You ROCK!! Have a wonderful day!

  22. Kittenmaster, I had problems with my password when editing it from the original password. My new password that I had created wouldn't let me log in this morning, so I had to and reset it. I want to create a password that I can remember.

Also, I want to comment on the new format. It does seem better to have threads but the flow isn't as it use to be and I find it is even harder to follow what is going on. I think I may not be on as much as I use to be and that may make it harder. Just my two cents.

  23. I'm having trouble following as well and figuring out "where" people are. Maybe I just need to get used to it - and quite possible need much more coffee - off to see ppearson at the breakfast "place" (hmmm, place, site ???)

Posted 4 years ago by GreatDane #

  24. Karin: You'll get used to it. You don't have to read everything, just the threads that interest you. Believe me, the old system was awful - but you were used to it, so it seemed fine.

  25. Kittenmaster, sorry for being a bit stupid, but how do I put the Bobster's Catster page with my name now?

Posted 4 years ago by GreatDane #

  26. Click on 'View Your Profile' at the top of the page, then on the 'Edit' link on the right.

  27. Thanks, KM!

  28. Seeing as I'm this side of the pond, this ought to be my two pennies worth! When I came online today, and clicked on the chat forum page, (and this might just be me) I was a tad overwhelmed by the number of threads - and then right down at the bottom, the suggested group headings we have to date. Would it be a better idea to reverse this, so we see the main subject headings first, followed by a list of threads? Might save some duplication of threads too?

  29. km:how do i get my name ,city and state and b-day for usernameinstead of my e-mail info?i tried edit profile 3 times and it would not change it,what now?

Posted 4 years ago by elaine from portland,ore,11-24 #

  30. Hi, Elaine. Someone else had the same question. KM replied that it couldn't be changed. Maybe that is something he will be able to fix at a later date. Maybe you could register again using a different e-mail address. You can create an e-mail address free on a lot of different websites. Just a thought...
