May I please have some hugs??

(61 posts)
  1. 2P, I hope you're able to get some satisfaction. Unfortunately, handymen are best referred by someone who's been pleased with their work. The truly outstanding, experienced craftsmen out there seldom have to advertise; they have more than enough work just through word of mouth.

One more bit; if you end up having to pursue anything with the BBB or local media, make sure you document your concerns in written correspondence (preferably letters that are signed for, when they're delivered). This also makes any small claims court issues much clearer, when you indicate you've attempted to resolve the problems.

    Big hugs!

  2. 2P, that's just terrible. Everybody's advice is brilliant. All I'm going to add is {{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}. Jasper sends oodles of headbutts and smooches and sitting on your lap and pawing at your arm and kitty kisses (he's very affectionate). Libby sends expressions of sorrow (she's a bit more standoffish but has a good heart!)

  3. Have no useful advice but want to {{{{{{hug}}}}}} you and let you cry on my shoulder if you want to.

  4. Thanks again. Am, for the moment, past the tears and into anger mode. Tile Guy is supposed to come over this evening. He did not give me a time when we spoke yesterday.... and if I don't hear from him by mid-afernnon - he'll get yet another call. He surely was Johnny-on-the-Spot with return calls when I wanted to hire him!

Ann - there is no physical address. I see all the red flags so clearly now... as I often do in the rear-view mirror. All I have is a phone number. I do have a written 'proposal' ... on which he wrote 'pd in full'

  5. Oh, my, 2P... you are in a tough spot. You can try doing a reverse lookup online, where you can search the white pages or yellow pages for the phone number (to see what name & address are associated with it).

If he offers to give you even 1/2 to 1/3 of what you paid, in return, I'd take it. From the sound of it, that's probably the best you're going to be able to do with him to gain satisfaction. Take that money, turn around and buy new tile, adhesive, grout & sealer, and go with the boss' wife. Ask if boss' wife will take payments over 3-6 months.

    Big hugs!

  6. Yep... I"m in a tough spot. Reverse lookup only found his ad on craigslist and other on-line ads. Here's one of the ads.... I believed what I read.

  7. Oh, 2P, that really stinks. I think I would go with the refund and get someone else. I do almost all of my own handy-work (one of the benefits of being single is that you become quite handy). I did have new kitchen counters put in last year and I wouldn't touch that job (although I did have fun tearing the old ones out, I worked out alot of frustrations with that)!

  8. After seeing what was done, I am sure I could have done better. 20/20 hindsight. Yes, I do lots of things on my own... but thought it best to get a pro on this one. HA! Guess I was wrong. I did the demo myself... with a little help from my son - he's stronger than I am. ;)

  9. so sorry to hear about this hassle, 2P..everyone given you great suggestions; I will add some {{hugs}}

  10. I think watching a "This Old House" demonstration video on how to do tile work would be better than what the supposed workers done for you. Maybe "This Old house" would come out and do the job for you. I don't know what they charge but they make a video of the jobs they do and air them on PBS.

  11. Well... the tile guys came over last night. I pointed out all the issues. They stayed long enough to fix the opening for the stove (had to remove and replace 4 tiles and Mikita (grind down) 4 others) and moved in my stove. Will need electician friend this weekend .. she'll move or invert the outlet so stove can be moved closer to the wall - and then we'll level it. Tile guys will be back on a Saturday to make all the other repairs. I should be cooking by Saturday !

Thank you all for the hugs, prayers and suggestions. I needed to calm down before dealing with them. I am glad I gave them the opportunity to make it right.

  12. I'm glad you were able to get a satisfactory response from the tile guys! Hurray for cooking on your own stove again!!!!

  13. HUUUUGGGSSS.. how awful! I say you take them to small claims court. That is ridiculous.

Posted 3 years ago by Kusaki #

  14. Oh that is wonderful 2P...So what is the first thing you plan to cook??

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  15. 2bp... can't decide. Either split pea soup or kalua pork. Hmmmm... since one is in the oven and the other on the stove top - I could do both! I'd have enough left overs I would have to cook for a week LOL

  16. So happy you got this resolved 2P, I would soon become miserable without a stove. My husband does carpentry(not tile)but he has names of many happy customers willing to talk to or show people his work if they are considering hiring him. He is also liscensed but that doesn't always mean the work will be what you like. You'll probably never hire anyone from Craigslist again but if they can at least show you some examples of their work you may get good results. I know a few people who have had great luck with Handyman help they found on Craigslist.

  17. Hey, 2P, while you're making Kalua pork, howzabout making a pot of Portugese bean soup? All you'll need then is a "Zippy's" sign out front! ;D

Posted 3 years ago by gatakitty #

  18. So glad they at least fixed the stove opening and I hope they come Saturday and re-do the rest of the problem areas. Happy cooking!

    Posted 3 years ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  19. LOL @ Gatakitty... No kidding. MMmmm... Portugese sausage, eggs and rice !
KK - been pretty much 2 months without a stove ACK !
KyKAT - thanks.... so anxious for some favorites!

  20. Yay, 2P. Alls well that ends well. Hugs to you.

  21. 2P, I am so happy your pain seems to end. Enjoy your cooking!

Posted 3 years ago by miu #

  22. Hugs >> 2P,I'm glad they are fixing it so you can cook.
Krazikat,I wouldn't NOTICE if I didn't have a stove. Unless I'm cooking for someone else I don't even use the oven. LOL

  23. {{{{hugs}}}}

    Posted 3 years ago by Cats4Cats #

  24. Buttercup - I don't use the oven much, but the stove top - that's a different story! Hard to make eggs in a huge electric fry pan... ya know? LOL

Posted 3 years ago by 2 Popoki #

  25. Not unless you are doing eggs for 40 like I do at my family get-togethers!

    Posted 3 years ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  26. LOL @ KYKAT - um no... It's just me! Those 2 little eggs look so lost in the pan...

Posted 3 years ago by 2 Popoki #

  27. 2P I hadn't even seen this before--what a nightmare you have gone through!! Your patients astound me! I would have been screaming to report them and find a lawyer to sue if I had to live without a stove all those days because they didn't do the job right! I am so thankful that they are making it right. Hang in there and know a prayer is being said that your remodeling goes better.

Posted 3 years ago by SoxsMom #

  28. Soxsmom - most the time without a stove was my removing the old stove, waiting for man-friend to cut the old counter; removing the old counter when man-friend didn't use enough finesse and chipped the formica, and then waiting to decide if I was going to do the work myself - or hire somebody. I get tired all over thinking about it ! Tile guys did the work 9/20 and 21 - then it was wait for help to move the stove - and THEN finding it didn't fit. And start calling the tile guys. So it's been a long drawn out saga. It's not quite over, but close !

  29. *bites tongue to keep from saying one of my favorite phrases (and the one students most often use when imitating me)*

"Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades."

    Dang. Shoulda bit my fingers.

Posted 3 years ago by gatakitty #

  30. LOL Yep... I'm not counting ANYTHING until it's finished.
