how did you come up with your cats names?

(51 posts)
  1. I had never lived with a cat until I met my husband, in fact all of my experiences with cats until that time were not good. But Tigger quickly convinced me that those were just the rare occasions and that cats can be very loving and hard to live without. She adopted me while my husband and I were still dating.

  2. "Gir" is from the old Nickelodeon cartoon called Invader Zim. Gir is named after Invader Zim's really cute robot sidekick who is always full of energy and loves food!!!

  3. Bogman was named after one of our favorite actor.... want to guess which one? Yep, you all got it in one! KING HUMPHREY BOGART aka Bogman.... He was called by the breeder, Rascal because he was always getting into stuff, but when we brought him home, he was so laid back I thought he was comatose! Hence the change in the name. He's much more like Bogie than a rascal!

Clark is named sort of after a character in Gilliagan's Island.. Thurston Howell III, but Clarkie is named Clarkston Howell III

Andy was originally named Andy Rooney (I screwed up and got Mickey Rooney and Andy Hardy mixed up and the poor baby was named after a commentatory from 60 Minutes). His name now is Andy Jetstream, the tail-less wonder aka 'Nilla Bean (because when he stretches out he looks like a vanilla bean).

  5. Oh, I like this :-) We wanted herb-related names for our kitties when our Siddhartha (Buddha) cat passed away.

Basil was of course...for the herb and also for Basil Fawlty, of Fawlty Towers (John Cleese british comedian). We used to call Baz "Basil Farty" because when we first got him, he had kitty gas (lol)

Tansey I wanted to name for the herb (Sweet Tansy), but my husband named her Tansey with an "e" for a piece of mandolin music he likes to play called "Tansey's Fancy".

Hermes....well...he was SUPPOSED to have been a girl kitty we were going to name Luna Eclipse, after her grand champion grandkitty Lunar Eclipse, but SHE turned out to be a HE, and we scrambled...the spouse suggested Hermes, and it stuck. He has a number of nicknames: Hermworm, Squirt, Herman Munster, Happy Butt, Boom Bottom, Buddy (that one's used a LOT), Hermadude. I also sometimes croon "Hermanooooooodle" when I want him to come upstairs and cuddle with me.

  6. BCAM,
Oh, and all this time I thought 'Clark' was for Clark Gable. :(

  7. Chloe: came from the shelter with the name Isabelle. Co-worker had just had a baby girl names Isabella. Hmmm... had to change. Standing in the living room one day, and the name just popped in my head. It fits.

Mili: came to me from Anncetera with the name Amelia - because likes high places. Since I love the Hawaiian culture I wanted something Hawaiian... yet didn't want to change her name too much. Gradually went from Amelia, to Melia, to Mili (pronouned me-lee) The word means pet. Milimili means favorite, and it is also a hand motion in hula.

  8. I like the story of the visitor who asked the little boy holding a cat what its name was.

    "Ben-Hur," answered the boy.

"Ben-Hur? That's an unusual name for a cat. How did you decide on that?" asked the incredulous visitor.

"It was just 'Ben,'" replied the boy, "until she had kittens."

  11. Well... mine are a bit difficult to explain because they are Spanish names but here I go:
Melon- I was given Melon when he was a kitten by my evil ex boyfriend. He bought it in a pet shop as if he was buying peanuts, he saw a baby meezer thought it was cute and bought it! He brought it to my tiny one bedroom flat and I was horrified and in love with the kitten at the same time! The poor baby had been drugged so it would stay quiet and when I left him on the floor he just stumbled around... it was heart wrenching. As he stumbled he fell over and all his paws were in the air and I said "Será melón" which in Spanish slang means something like "how clumsy!"... and that's what he is called Clumsy! But it so happens that the word Melon means clumsy AND also the fruit melon. So people think that he is called Melon because he is nice and round!!!
Melon is my baby and he has a sweet and quiet character.

Pipa- Pipa was adopted from a woman that was going to be evicted because she had lots of cats in a flat that had animals prohibited. So all her cats were adopted and I got the baby meezer so Melon would have a sister. When I got her home my brother said that if this kitten would be the seed (pip) of the melon! I loved it! Sooo Pipa is (seed) in Spanish. I have a Melon and the seed (PIPA and MELON).

Yes, kind of weird but I love the sound! And my life would not be complete without my cats. The sweetest, best humoured and lovesome cats in the world.

  13. I know, he meowed all night that first night... I figure his little head hurt.

  15. PM, I love the story of your cats' names!

It reminded me of a friend I had in grade school; her name was Alexandra but everyone called her Moon. When her parents brought her home from the hospital her older brother said, "If I'm your son, she must be your moon".

  20. Hi Y'all,
Maybelline is my calico girl, she was and is really skinny, so she became May-b-lean!
Randel, It just rolled off our tongues one day, he is a huge, round, fat gray and white tuxy.
Stink, is a black fluffy fellow, he literally was sitting in the middle of my street when he was a tiny fella, he tricked me into picking him up, I named him Trick but my kids renamed him Stink because he stunk so bad. His body, his ears, his bum, his breath, his everything stunk? He is also known as the Ninja Stealth Kitty because he can't meow very loudly and he is solid black.
Junebug, is a boy kitty. We got him in June but that was a girls name. He is neurotic and pulls his fur out. He is a black and white tuxy.
Charli, my son adopted Charli with his brother Lucy (rip)and named them. Charli had to have his tail amputated. He is my free spirit kitty that is black. He spends alot of time visiting neighbors.
Ellie aka Ellie Bellie. Calico, feral rescued by my son from my neighbors down spout. She has a very flabby belly since her spa visit and she is a scardy cat, she hates the outdoors.
    DOGS
Tallulah, jack russell, mama to all of the cats. Short and fat and used to be bouncy. Tallulah rolled off my daughters tongue when going down a list of possible names. When she said Tallulah, everyone stopped and looked at her including Tallulah!
Bleau, was named that because he was the saddest, lonliest, dirtiest little puppy at the humane society.
    That's all folks!
