  1. Something rather interesting came in to me a couple of days ago. If you looked at the Heros page on my site you will see that I mention PETA as being on of the large organizations who work on behalf of animals. I was not making a stand or offering any opinions about PETA I merely used them as an example. Someone wrote to me and said that as long as I have PETA on my website they will never donate anything to any of the Heros. I damned near fell off my chair.

I am in Canada and wondering if something is going on in the U.S. with PETA that maybe we haven't heard of yet. Do any of you have a problem with PETA and if so, could you tell me what it is? I don't know the person who wrote and if they are some kind of a nut or if they really have a valid objection.

  2. Petpntr, I don't have any experience. But I did find this article. I wonder if this is what people have seen?

  3. I'm not 100% sure why some people don't like PETA, but I'm not all for them myself. I think they need to change their priorities. They insult people who eat meat or wear fur, and since most of us enjoy a nice Filet Mignon, we're not going to go for a Tofu Mignon just because the cows aren't treated nice.
I think for PETA to gain the respect of people they should go more towards how people treat cats and dogs. I'd support them if I saw them attacking animal abusers. I guess it's a double standard, but I don't see how throwing blood onto a coat helps anyone. But showing a golden retriever that had something happen to it, and then showing us a picture of the person they Charged for the crime would probably get a lot more attention.

That's just my thoughts. I was once a PETA member and bought stuff from them, but I'm over it because I enjoy Ribs and Hamburgers. Although, I do buy the cagefree eggs, and try to go for the anti-biotic free meats when my mom lets me.

  4. They used to be a good organization that campaigned for more humane treatment of cats and dogs and for no-kill shelters and the like. Then they got taken over by extremeists and have forgotten what they originally stood for.

  5. Thanks Willow for sending this information. I bet you are right. This may be exactly what that person was referring to without looking any deeper into the accusations. Whenever I read something like that I just have to check out the sources. The organization who is putting these ads out is a front for restaurants and alcohol and tabacco companies. Of course they want everyone to think the worse of PETA or anyone else who can prevents the people they represent making money. I guess for every good thing someone can say we will always find someone willing to say something bad about any person, organization or group. Here is what I found out about the people who are putting these ads out about PETA:

    CENTER FOR CONSUMER FREEDOM

The Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) (formerly called the "Guest Choice Network") is a front group for the restaurant, alcohol and tobacco industries. It runs media campaigns which oppose the efforts of scientists, doctors, health advocates, environmentalists and groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, calling them "the Nanny Culture -- the growing fraternity of food cops, health care enforcers, anti-meat activists, and meddling bureaucrats who 'know what's best for you.' "

Over 40 percent of the group's 2005 expenditure was paid to Rick Berman's PR company, Berman & Co. for "management services. [1] As part of its operations CCF runs a series of attack websites, including "consumerfreedom.com, activistcash.com, cspiscam.com, animal-scam.com, fishscam.com, obesitymyths.com, physiciansscam.com [and] petalkillsanimals.com".[2]

  6. KyKat pretty much summed it up. The end NEVER justifies the means. If PETA really cared about the animals, they wouldn't go to such great lengths to peeve humanity. I am not giving up my right to enjoy meat with my meal, freezing my butt off in a deer stand, or wearing one of the three fur capes older than I am that I inherited from my grandmother if I so choose just because they get in my face spewing hate and venom.

I'll contribute all day to HSUS, or local shelters, but not one dime for PETA or their affiliates. It's a simple fact: one catches more flies with honey than vinegar. Too bad PETA never learned that.

  7. I second what Gatakitty mentioned, I am not giving up my right to enjoy meat with my meal or my right to wear fur if someone in my family were to give me a coat or I had the means to purchase one. Each person is entitled to their opinion but for someone to go and defile one's property or threaten one's health as PETA has done is an organzation that I want nothing to do with. If you want to be a vegan, that is your choice, not mine and I respect your choice just as I would want you to respect mine.

  8. I think PETA has ended up with a reputation like the Muslim faith is getting. There are lots of quiet members who work diligently for what they believe in. Then there are the loud fanatical ones who, like terrorists, get all the attention and give the whole religion a bad name. Unfortunately, until PETA gets better at policing itself and does some serious repair to its reputation, most of the people I know don't want anything to do with the entire organization.

  9. Hear Hear CBM. I couldn't quite figure out how to word it, but you did just awesome. :)

  10. PETA is on the side of extremeism that most people find distasteful. There are also people who say they are affiliated with them and a few other animal rights organizations that will attack researchers and thier families. I do not like PETA and will not support them either.

  11. I had no idea that opinions about PETA were so strongly negative. I have taken my reference to them off the site even though I was not saying anything about them. The sentence I had was something like "large organizations like PETA, WWF, Greenpeace, etc". I have left it at "large organizations" without naming any. It still gets the point I wanted to make across just fine.

Thanks folks for all your input.

  12. Wow, this is really interesting to hear. In NZ we never heard anything too terrible about PETA (just paint thrown on fur and such). I never knew they had such underhanded methods. I was of Petpntr's opinion of them. Interesting

  13. Well, what really got PETA dragged into the light was the fact that their animal shelter euthanized over 90% of the animals in it's shelter last year. Can't say I think that is 'ethically treating animals'

And what is so wrong with the restaurants and others resisting the nanny culture that is slowly being forced down our throats by those who have decided they know what is best for all of us? Are you saying that PETA's actions are fine and that anyone that opposes them are wrong? Why is it wrong to have a different opinion?

  14. my brother is in Peta membership and they stopped giving him mail stamp and stuff

Posted 3 years ago by neelaANDcharlie #

  15. Instinct I am not sure who you are directing your questions to but I don't think anyone is saying anything about PETA's actions being fine or not or that anyone said those who oppose them are wrong. People are stating opinions which is what I asked for and so far no one is challenging anything that another has said. Which is as it should be because this was not meant to be a debate.

  16. Petpntr, My advice hun is to let this be! If you keep this up a memeber or two will get going and start lobbing pointed objects at each other causing unfluffiness!

Posted 3 years ago by Momma to 2 MaineCoons #

  17. Hmmmm pointed objects aye? I would not feel the need to ask if anyone else had made this comment LV but it absolutely begs the question. If others are lobbing pointed objects.........what may I ask will you be lobbing and do I need to duck or just keeping my eyes and nose alert for mail at Christmas?

  22. PETA is an organization that has too many radicals in its ranks. I went to meetings many years ago, and although there are good people who belong to PETA, the extremism was too much for my tastes. I agree with what someone said previously, that they started out with good intentions, but radicalism is not the answer.
I am a vegetarian (mostly) and when folks ask me, I will tell them why I am, but I don't shove it down their throats. (I tend to get up on a soapbox from time to time, but mostly about spay/neuter LOL)
But on the other hand, I don't try to tell PETA folks that they are wrong, either. I'll talk to them and tell them my views - PERIOD.
    'nuff said.

  23. I lost any respect I might have had for PETA when they killed all those animals they had taken from various places under the guise of trying to find homes for them. They didn't even intend to give the animals a chance -- they just took the dogs and cats to their van and killed them then dumped the bodies in a dumpster.

    Posted 3 years ago by owlwatcher_974 #

  24. Ohmigod Owlwatcher can that be true??? I have never heard of anything like this. What the hell would they do that for? I didn't even know PETA had an actual brick and mortar building to house animals.

Posted 3 years ago by petpntr #

  25. Well, Petpntr, if you would have read through the site petakillsanimals.com you would have found full coverage of the trial and all kinds of nifty information that PETA doesn't want you to know about.

But hey, I'm just the unfluffy trouble maker around here, right?

Posted 3 years ago by Instinct #

  26. Instinct, you always make us think - not a bad thing to think outside of one's comfort zone.

Is LV going to start flinging poo? (does anyone remember that line from the movie Madagascar? "If you have any poo, fling it now!!") Because, if so I personally am running for cover!

Posted 3 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  27. Not poo throwing again <I'm running with you WWM!>
    ;)

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  28. Quick, Buttercup - let's don our water and poo proof, head to toe, suits!!! Oh, and grab a can of air freshener.... just in case.

Posted 3 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  29. Sigh!!!!!!
Instinct my reason for posting was not to verify, validate, agree or disagree with anyone's opinion of PETA. I only wanted to get a general idea if people had an issue with them and what the issue might be because we don't hear about PETA much where I live. Whether those opinions are based on fact or fiction isn't the issue in this context and I don't really care who says what about them one way or the other.

As much as I detect it will be a disappointment for you, you won't be getting any arguments from me.

    Bored Sigh!!!!
I will repeat in case you missed it first time around. This was not meant to be a debate so I think you need to take your bows and arrows or poo as the case may be and look for another thread to throw them at or start your own and argue all you want with anyone who responds.
