Hi everyone, How are you all doing? Its raining here which would be great but I have a serious leak in my porch roof. Next weekend there is a work party (brothers) scheduled here to get it fixed so I hope it stops. I have some work to do before then and the rain is seriously in my way. :(

Hi, Sandi! Sorry the roof is leaking, but good that it's not leaking to the inside of your house!

Sandi, I hope it lets up for you soon. Send it my way! I've got cracks in the yard again. (sigh) Tomorrow I'll be transplanting plants and trees, in advance of a couple days of rain.

I agree KW, I've had that in fact I have one spot that leaks when it is really pouring or a lot of snow melting. I have to remember to let them know about it. I have a lot of stuff stored on the porch and there is a lot of water damage so it is going to be a job to go through it all.

Hi, Ann! I wish I could send you some of our rain here in Oregon. It poured down at times. I hold my breath a little each Fall to see if our roof is watertight. So far so good!

I hope you can save most of what's stored on the porch, Sandi. :)

I thought well its one way to get rid of stuff--I can be a pack rat (its a family failing) I try but it is so hard to do.

Goodnight, Ange. Sweet dreams and cuddles with Max Max!

I wish you could send me some too, KW! The ironic part is that so far this year, we're ahead in rainfall. I should just give up and plant only quasi-xeriscape plants suitable for savannah, desert, and bluff oak woods habitat only.
I think next year I'll be giving buffalograss a try. It's already growing naturally in a section of my orchard (that never gets water other than rainfall).

I will put you on the rain list, Ann! What kind of trees are you transplanting?

Sandi, I hear you on the pack rat thing. I look around in my house and despair sometimes! I swear, I just need a good friend, a dumpster, a pickup truck to take usable items to the thrift store 6 blocks away, and some sort of way to reward myself for the effort, once it's done. (And another recurring weekly or monthly award, if I'm able to keep it that way.)

I agree, Ann and a good chunk of time to deal with it all would be nice, too.

Let's see... cherry, nectarine, apple, pear, apricot, redbud, hawthorn, DED-resistant American elm, Shumard oak, ginkgo, seedless sweet gum, and chocolate summer mimosa.

Good lord, Ann!! Are you transplanting an entire orchard or are these young starts??

Sandi, for me it's not so much the time as the effort. I look at all that needs to be done, and get overwhelmed just thinking about it.
(I've found that throwing things away or donating them actually goes pretty fast, but only if I get into a fast, snappy, decision-making kind of mood. That's the hard part for me.)

Oh, and honeylocust and Purple Robe locust. These are full trees in pots, not little sticks. (Except for the 3 trident maples and the dozen shellbark hickories.)
And that doesn't include the trees I've already planted in the past several years; two tulip poplars, a DED-resistant elm, 3 apricots, 2 peaches, 2 pears, and 2 apples.

KW, I have 2 acres. It's hot and dry in the summer. Most of existing trees on the property are in a hedge arrangement, around the perimeter. And most of those trees are very drought-resistant; hackberry, Osage orange, thorny locust, Siberian elm, and black walnut.

I hope these provide you with lots of shade and fruit in the years to come, Ann!

Ann, I agree the effort has a lot to do with it. I just have to be in the right mood or something and getting mood and time together isn't often. *sigh* I hope you have good luck with your trees. I love trees although all mine are just volunteers

Here's one of the tulip trees I planted 5 years ago; it started out about 4 feet tall.

And here are the ancient male locust (on the left) and male Osage orange (on the right) that are in my front yard, off to one side.

I'm counting on it, KW! But even if they don't, they'll provide someone else with shade and fruit and nuts, if they leave them alone.
(Next year I'd like to add pawpaws and almonds. Maybe butternuts, too. And there will be the beginning of a crabapple gazebo.)

You must have a green thumb, Ann. :) Our lot has probably ten Douglas fir trees on it. I can't grow anything that requires much sun. They are pretty tall.

I'm going to call it a night. Our beloved University of Oregon Ducks are getting their tailfeathers kicked by USC. 37 to 10 in the third quarter! Arghh! ;)

The Montana Grizzlies lost today also. Its a sad day in mudville

See ya later, KW!
Thanks, Sandi! I like trees. They're one of the things that I can help nurture, that may endure beyond my lifetime.
You wouldn't believe how many people have told me that I should cut down that big old Osage and locust. I figure if they've been here 100 or 200 years, they've demonstrated a distinct ability to thrive where they were planted. And I'm not going to disturb them. (Though I will probably perform some minor pruning for health purposes this winter.)
