  1. Ah, i need to know about using fedex. I want to send a couple of packages back to nz and saw that you can sign up online for sending packages. But it asks for a credit card number, does it cost just to sign up or are they just wanting it for payment of shipping?
Also, do they come out and pick up the packages free or do i get charged?

  2. Airy, they should just want it for shipping charges, and they will pick it up at your place. I haven't used fedex but have used ups and that's how they did it for me.

  3. Airy, I think they just want a credit card for billing purposes. I don't think it would cost to sign up and I would not think they would charge you for picking up packages. However, I have not used FedEx at my home and it's been years since I have used them at an office setting as well. You can call them at
1.800.463.3339 and ask the representative, they would be more knowledgeable than I :)

  4. Would people recommend ups more?

  5. I have never had a problem with either one, I would go with the most affordable, since they are both dependable carriers.

  6. they both will take care of you equally.

  7. Research DHL as well - they have a much better overseas network. It might be a little less money. If it's not too big a package, even regular mail might work. You can determine pricing for US Mail at: http://postcalc.usps.gov/
    and DHL at http://www.dhl.com/splash.html

  8. I have shipped with both FedEx and UPS for my business...FedEx has always been great overseas, UPS lost half of one of my overseas shipments so I have shipped overseas with them anymore. DHL is more expensive than FedEx and UPS.

  9. My experience with FedEx and UPS is as a recipient, rather than a shipper. UPS is always willing to leave my stuff for me; FedEx isn't.

  10. according tomy tomato gtroup you should avoid UPS at all costs for shipping to another country as they have exporbidant handling fees that the shipee is expected to pay. I personally would use the USPS (united states post office) they have the cheapest rates of anyone and you can track all your shipping.

  11. Airy
I agree with Theknittingninja The post office is the way to go to ship to another country, it's much cheaper!
So what are you sending Mom? I won't tell!! LOL

  12. Airy, a friend of mine has recently had several Fedex packages sent to her in NZ from the US of fragile stuff that she didn't want to entrust to the mail. I have to say, though everything arrived in perfect condition, it sounded like a hassle to me. There were delays at their Auckland office, she seemed to spend hours on the phone to them, geeing them up and sending them forms -- mind you, that was complicated by Customs -- and it seemed to me to take weeks longer than ordinary mail. So if it's not precious, I would go with ordinary mail too...

  13. It had better be candy for your favourite Aunt, Airy!

Posted 3 years ago by KapitiKats in NZ #

  14. Hehe :) It is candy. In nz it will no doubt get delivered by nz post (the national postal carrier). I think i got confused by usps and ups, but will compare them tonight :) Thanks all

  15. Ah, but i'm not sure how much of the candy will make it down your way KK :( It's going to my sis first and she has very good reason to eat all the chocolate that arrives on her doorstep :(

  16. Don't we have DHL here? KK, any input on that one? Make my candy the right stuff Airy. I promise I'll get onto your sis to make sure this months "care package" gets sent in the next few days.

  17. We do have DHL but I would go with using the Post Office.

  18. I'm going to go with the post office (usps) as they're the only ones to quote shipping as under $100!!!! And i have two packages to send :( They seemed to have a reasonable price, only trouble is getting to one of their branches, they're aren't any near us.

  19. Airy, I sent loads of stuff home from the States through the mail when I was staying with friends over there and it always arrived just fine. The only thing I'd be careful about is, if it's breakable, pack it with heaps of bubblewrap and double box it and fill any left-over space in each box with those little polystyrene peanuts. I'd probably even bubblewrap candy so it doesn't arrive as crumbs.... :-) Hope you find a post office not too far away...

  20. All I can say is pack whatever you are sending really well with bubble wrap or plastic bags because the mail gets tossed around. I always get comments and praise for the way my packages are packed and wrapped. They make it there in good condition. Be sure and tape it up well, also put your name and address, and the person you are sending it to on the box, in case the shipping paper gets torn off (if you use shipping paper. I would if you are shipping overseas). I've always used my local post office for shipping. They have priority mail and general delivery. I've shipped overseas and it averaged a little over $4.00 a pound. Good luck. Just thought I'd give you a little info on my experience. If I send any kind of food or candy, I put mine in a ziplock bag, in case it breaks or busts, so it won't be all over the place. Anything breakable I put in another box with padding or use a cookie tin of some sort and pack it in the main box. I give my package the shake test. Once packed before wrapping, I gently shake it, if I hear it move around much, it needs more packing material.

  21. woohoo, so much knowledge :) One package I'm sending is just a forwarded package for some of Jim man's family so i'm not even opening it before reposting. But the package i'm sending to my sis is actually one of the boxes we got our housewarming presents in (sylvesterandmiasmomas) and i'm going to wrap it in brown paper that also came in a housewarming present. Is that shipping paper?
Anyway all the lollies in that pack come in plastic bags, except the junior mints which i will wrap in glad wrap (clear film if that makes more sense).
Oh well, i'm off with my three packages (one's a set of speakers i'm retunring through fedex cause they didn't work) and one letter for Brazil :)
I do have one more question. When we moved in it was mentioned that next to our mailboxes is a drop off mailbox (for packages and letters). In future could i use this instead going to the post office, and just print off the postage label (i've seen you can do that)?

Posted 3 years ago by Airyshone #

  22. Yes brown paper is shipping paper. Not sure about the drop-off box you are talking about. I live in a dinky town that is only big enough for a post office! lol, population 357!
