  1. The idiot and I were headed to work yesterday. We were in my car and had just pulled out of the driveway when my car quit. It just stopped running and would not start again. Thanks to a neighbor and a passerby who stopped to help us, we managed to push the car back into the driveway. Thankfully, we were able to go to work in Teresa's car.

We haven't checked my car out yet to see if there is anything that we can fix, but if it is something that we cannot take care of, I will be without a car indefinitely since I do not have the money to get it fixed.

As if that wasn't enough, last night my blood pressure was running 160/105. After taking my nightly dose of medicine, it only came down to 135/95. Today it is running 140/90 - and that is with medicine.

I have no way of seeing a doctor, no money - no transportation. I have no way of getting my car fixed unless my roommate is somehow able to fix it. And I cannot miss any more days in either of my on campus classes or I will be dropped from those classes. *sighs* No wonder my blood pressure is high.

    I really need a vacation.....

  2. Sorry your car and blood pressure are giving you trouble, OW. {{{hugs}}}

  3. OW, I hope its nothing more serious than a dead battery in your car (that's what mine did this week, just wouldn't start again after I stopped @ Office Max) and that your bp becomes more reasonable soon.

  4. It's not the battery.... the car just stopped running as I pulling out of the driveway. It has plenty of power, just acts like there is no spark. I have a bad feeling that something has gone horribly, horribly wrong with it. *sighs*

  5. Oh, OW, I wish I could help. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. OW, I hope it's something as simple as getting a sensor replaced, or perhaps the alternator or distributor cap.

  7. OW, so sorry for the problems with the car AND even more important, the high BP. I had to quit my meds because my medicare plan didn't cover what my dr. had prescribed because it has no generic avail.
Take care of yourself. You're the most important part.
    Peace, hugs and purrs.

  8. It sounds like a timing belt to me. That will cause a car to stop in its tracks. If it is an american made car, timing belts aren't expensive and fairly easy to fix. Good luck

  9. I'm sorry about your travails with your car OW,,watch that b/p.
Bobbi are you still off your antihypertensives? Please let your doc know that you are, there are many, many b/p pills that are generic that only cost $4 at walmart. Please get back on something. Uncontrolled high b/p will damage your organs as bad as uncontrolled diabetes.

  10. {{{HUGS}}} and prayers OW. When I didn't live in a city with public transportation I was often a car repair away from disaster. Well, what I felt was a disaster. Check the water level in your battery (as well as timing belt) if you have that type of battery. I had a car just shut off on me once and there were several dry cells in the battery. The key still buzzed in the ignition when I opened the door so I didn't think it could be a battery problem. I'm praying that someone with some mechanical knowledge comes your way.

  11. OW...I'm not sure how much you know about cars, but, with my old Chevy, when I couldn't afford to replace something (which was usually all the time) that's when I'd tinker around on it. Check your spark plugs & wires. There were times when I'd have to take an emery board & clean the connections on them & regap them myself (Thank goodness I had the tools). It made all the difference in the world as to how it ran. Even your air cleaner can affect your car starting.

I wish I were there,I would check it out with the knowledge I've accumulated over the yrs. I'm no certified mechanic, but,I kept my car out of the shop & running for yrs. with no cash. I had that car for 38 yrs. & only had it in the shop for a few serious things like the flywheel needing changed & when the brakes or bearings (suspension stuff) had to be replaced. I was single back then (shoulda stayed that way) so I basically had to learn to take care of my own car.

Best of Luck to you & I also hope you can find someone near you that can help you.

  12. There isn't much that can be tinkered with on this car. My roommate checked to see if there was spark going to the spark plugs... nothing. The distributer doesn't seem to be getting any electricity either. I agree with the mechanic that says it's probably a fuse, but my roommate insists that it isn't a fuse. I think I will go pull the fuses later when it's a little cooler outside. I do not want to keep driving my roommate's car -- even though I am unbelievably grateful that he is letting me use it. Still, our class schedules do not allow us to use the same car. We can get by like this for maybe a week before my English instructor starts getting uptight at me wanting to leave early to take my roommate to his school.

  14. I'm sorry OW. I remember one time when I was having a problem w/the starter on my Nova. For about a month I used a dang screwdriver to jump the car to running. With the old cars you can do things like that & get away with little to no damage. They just don't make them like that anymore.

Another time...the first & only time I ever had a car stolen (& it was on a Monday morning), I lived in Walnut Creek. My Chevy was parked in the stall right under my bedroom. The dang thing ran so quiet, the jerk that stole it (he was a parole come to find out)was able to start it & take offwithout me hearing a sound. They found it that evening in the worst possible spot ever in Oakland (Embarcadero). The cops told me another hour & there would've been nothing left of it.

Long story short,I spent a couple of wks. using the same screwdriver to start my car till I could afford to replace it,that the parole used to popped my ignition out. BTW...What year is your car?

  15. It's a 1991 Toyota Tercel. We've checked everything - fuses, relays, spark plugs. There is no spark going to either the spark plugs or the rotor. It could be a number of things - none of which we know anything about. *sighs*

There is only one other time I saw a car stopped in its tracks like that... when I had my 1974 Pontiac (I got the 974 for my name from its license plate). I was driving home one night and had some friends with me. We got to the street I lived on and the car just quit running and wouldn't start again. In this case, there was a problem with the timing. My dad had it running again in a couple of days. *sighs* I wish my dad were still alive. He could fix this.

But in this situation it isn't the timing... there is just no spark at all. The car is too new... my roommate and I are totally out of our depth.

  17. Good News!!!

First of all, my brother says he will come over tomorrow to take a look at my car, which means I might be able to get one of his mechanic friends to fix my car if my brother doesn't know how to fix it. But if my brother flakes out or cannot get the car running and cannot get one of his friends to fix it for me, my roommate's mom said that we could use her credit card to get my car fixed!!! Either way, I should have my baby running again soon!

Also, I noticed that I started feeling better physically when my roommate gave me the news so I checked my blood pressure. It has come down from 139-145/89-95 to 124-128/74-78!!! It is amazing what getting rid of a huge amount of stress can do for a person! *smiles happily*

  18. OW, that's FANTASTIC! Good news about the car, great news about your bp. {{{HAPPY HUGS}}} this time!

  19. Good news about your blood pressure coming down OW. I really hope one of your brothers friends can fix your car. I had a car simply stop like that once, turned out to be the cam belt. Don't know if your car has a cam belt, not all cars do. fingers crossed that it is quick and cheap to repair. My current car is still at the mechanics getting a power steering leak fixed and as each day goes by I'm sure the bill is going up.

  20. Great to hear the news...especially the blood pressure!

I'll also see if non-helper here might have an idea on what it could be. He's a retired mechanic, but,he's also lost alot of brain cells from all the drinking & pot smoking. The commercials are pretty accurate when they say "The Brain is a Terrible Thing to Waste, & he seems to be wasting his pretty good.

I hope your brother keeps his word. Fingers crossed that he does.

  21. Bumpity-bump...OW...I asked non-helper If he had any suggestions on your car & he said it sounded electrical in sonme way & to see if you can find someone to check the rotor under the cap to see if it turns when you try to start it.

HE thinks it might be in the distributor area (not necessarily the distributor itself) but, maybe the pin under the distributor.

I hope your son was able to come out & look at it. If not,I'd be glad to ask my non-helper here if he could be more specific.

  22. I will mention this to my brother when he comes back over tomorrow. So far they (my brother and my roommate) have checked the timing belt, all of the fuses they could find, and they checked to see if the spark plugs were getting any electricity. My brother seems to think it might be an inline fuse somewhere so I am trying to find a wiring diagram.

  23. I'm glad to hear that you will be able to get your car fixed and that your blood pressure came down. Whew!!

  24. Well, my roommate just pointed out to me that it is not a sure thing that his mom will be able to help me. He said that we need to get an estimate then he will tell his mom the cost and ask her if it will be a hardship for her to pay for the repairs. He seems to think that I can find a good car to replace mine for about $600 and is kind of pushing me in that direction. Beggars can't be choosers, so I may have to get another car - if I can find something half-way reliable for that price. If I do go that route, it will just be a temporary solution because I will find a way to get my baby fixed eventually. To be honest, I don't want another car -- I want my car. I guess I should quit complaining and be grateful for whatever help I get though.

    Posted 1 year ago by owlwatcher_974 #

  25. OW, that seems like kind of a waste of money to me, to spend $600 on a 'new' car when what you really want is your old car to keep working. $600 would surely be a hefty chunk of any repair bill! I hope that it is something your brother and his friend can fix and am keeping my fingers crossed for you!
