  1. It may be that Ellis and Otto have found their home, at last! A friend of mine has neighbors who would love to have Otto and Ellis join their family on Christmas.

After many questions and much discussion, it sounds as if Otto and Ellis would fit in just fine, after an initial period of adjustment. The family has one very senior kitty (20 yrs), and two elderly sheepdogs. They also have 3 girls, all of whom are very good with the current pets (gentle and kind).

First, Otto and Ellis would stay with my friend for 7 weeks, though. I think that since she has a friendly dog, it would be good for them to adjust to being around a dog, first.

They would be indoor-only kitties, and they would not be declawed. Though the family would be noisier and more active than mine, they would likely do just fine, after an initial adjustment period and confined area. The parents are responsible pet owners, and their pets receive appropriate veterinary care.

I will meet this family in a week. If I have any misgivings after meeting them, I will not go through with the adoption. Likewise, if things somehow don't work out, I'd take them back rather than see them surrendered to a shelter.

This week I'll be getting Otto and Ellis accustomed to traveling, and pulling together their records and supplies. Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts and prayers! I'll keep you all updated as things progress toward the boys finally going home.

  2. Wow Ann that is SO good to hear. After their excellent fortune to be found and taken care of by you now it sounds like that is an ideal family to be owned by the wonderful kits. Whoo hoo!

  4. Oooh, this is great news, Ann! It's got to be so hard to give tehm up, though!
I hope everything works out perfectly and that Otto and Ellis will have a furrever home by Christmas. Great job!

  5. Thanks, all! And yes, GD, the hardest part will be giving them up. I've gotten very fond of them! But I'm not doing anybody any favors by having too many cats in my home, if these little brothers will be just as happy with this family.

  9. Oh Ann...Your news brings tears to my eyes. You have to be the most incredible kitty caregiver I've ever known and I've known alot of them. What a wonderful, selfless thing to do for Otto and Ellis...you've done so much for them and now they will have a perfect, loving home furrever. You are so special Ann. *someone pass the tissues please*

  10. Ann, that's just the best news. I'd only sound one note of caution, and that's the timing : here in the UK most animal shelters and charities specifically stop homing cats & dogs for the Christmas period. This isn't just to deter people giving pets as presents, but because any family home is hyper chaotic at this time of year, which can make adjustment on both sides harder than it needs to be. But that aside, this is just fantastic news, I'm so pleased! Give them both a special ear tickle from me :o)

  11. Thank you all so much! I'm truly hopeful that this home will turn out to be their forever home. I'd so much like to see these brothers find a home together!

GD, they're doing great. They're even managing to get Sweet Pea to play with them (when she's not hissing at them). She might even miss them - she won't have anyone to pick on!

And thank you for the reminder, MCW. The timing is part of the reason they'd be staying at my friend's house until Christmas day. Not only do they need to get adjusted to being around a dog, but my friend's house will be more similar to my house (and less chaotic than the family's home). Plus, it will also be a bit of a happy surprise for the girls (ages 13, 7 and 2). It's best that Otto and Ellis aren't tiny little 8 week old kittens, especially with such a young girl in the family.

I've been reassured by my friend that all of the girls are outstanding with animals, especially their existing pets. This was very important for me to know, as well as the entire family's track record with pets. I'm also reassured that my friend is in regular touch with this family, in person; she could always follow up a few times to help make sure they're doing well. That's more follow-up reassurance than one can usually get through local rescues and shelters.

  15. Oh, Ann, such happy, happy news! Kids who love animals are awesome; they treat their animals like best friends, not like 'pets', and the pets get lots of play and loving time (and a bed to sleep on). Hope SO MUCH it all works out!

  18. I'm looking forward to meeting the family on Sunday morning. I'm crossing my fingers! I trust my friend's judgment, because she's another very devoted person, when it comes to her pets.

Otto and Ellis will go for a short ride today in separate carriers. They'll come along when I have to take the recycling in, and also to pick up a prescription at the pharmacy. Tomorrow, it'll likely be a slightly longer trip. I'm hoping to get them a bit more used to travel, and help give them the idea that treats await them at the end of their trip. Much nicer than a vet visit, I think!

  19. I'm sure they will like just going out shopping with momma, and yes, much nicer than a vet visit!!!

  20. Anncetera, I really hope that all works out for Otto and Ellis. I think it is wonderful that they can stay together!! Maybe them staying together will help their move easier and they will adjust faster. It is always good to have a buddy in unchartered territory!!!
