  1. The University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) has finally aproved the group that has been trying to start a TNR program for the freal cats on the campus. This is a huge step in this area, once this get out hopefully we can get other areas in the city/ state to do the same.

  5. Wow Athena...what a great story! I'm sure this will be a great example to the other areas in Nebraska. What a wonderful campas crowd to be so caring and actively taking care of a big problem and in such a loving manner. Thanks for sharing that and best of luck to those involved. It's gonna be a long road but it's all worth while. =)

  6. Athena...That's great that the University is working with the Husker cats to solve some of the problems that stem from feral cats. I know all too well how fast they can multiply. I've been rescuing ferals for years. In fact, the last 2 intact male & female were finally caught,& spayed & neutered as of about 5 mos. ago. The male (I call him Hopper) took me 6 yrs. to catch. The female (Ms.Hissy)took me 3 yrs. to trap, but, not before she had 5 litters.

I must say...when I saw the pics on your first link, I couldn't help but laugh because it looks as tho they're all getting 3rd & 4th helpings from the chow line.

I wish the campus & all those involved with Huskers Cats the best of luck & who knows...maybe some of the beauties may even find forever homes. :)

  7. Truly wonderful. Maybe they can be Heros too. Afterall, this is such an incredibly needed service. I hope others will jump on board and be open to the same mind set. Thanks for posting this.

  11. Oh Athena...Great pics. I squeeled out loud when I came to the first shot of Fuzzyferal. It's gorgeous. Is it the angle of the shot or does he/she have an unusual short tail?
Looking at them, you almost feel like your looking into their souls thru their eyes.
I wish nothing but the best of luck for all involved in trying to save & control all these beautiful babies.

  12. Athena, this is great news! Does your organization have a recommended plan of action, yet, based on best practices/results at the other existing university programs?

Also, just to let you know... in terms of helping provide trap-neuter-release services for feral cats, the University of Missouri-Columbia's College of Veterinary Medicine runs Project H.O.P.E. ("Helping Overpopulation Through Education"). I don't know if they have a similar project running on their campus, but they help with large-scale canine & feline TNR clinics in Kansas City for Spay & Neuter Kansas City. Dr. Meadows and Dr. Kuntz are the contacts; the clinics provide invaluable training for veterinary students at the university.

(One minor difference between that and some other programs is that FIV and FeLV testing isn't performed, due to overall low percentage of infected individuals in the population, highly effective vaccinations being administered to the rest of the population, and low feline-to-feline transmission rates after treatment.)

Perhaps, eventually, the campus TNR program can become a model for TNR in the entire Lincoln metro area. Wouldn't that be great!

  13. I think the fuzzyferal is a about half grown at the awkward age. He/she reminds me so much of my Rocky. Alot of these cats I have not seen. I am only employed part time (my 2nd job) for UNL event staffing. But I do hope to get involved now that my kids are both married and gone my daughter just got married 3 weeks ago. I was looking for a project to get involved in. And i will forward any good Ideas or links to them.
