CM, I had speech therapy for three years -- I knew what I was saying, but other's didn't. Now I speak more clearly, but people still don't understand me.....
I am reminded of the story of the six year old whose entire family thought he was deaf-mute. One day at dinner (the noon meal in the Southern US) he said "the soup is cold". After coming to, the family asked him why he had never spoken. His reply "Up 'til now, all was up to snuff".
I could tell you stories of many children I have known through the years who seemed to speak later than they should and who turned out fine or better. I guess that two is just so young, and that there are so many other things going on that kids pick it up at different times.
I think you are doing the right thing by checking out all possibilities, but the chances are well in Maddie's favor that all will be fine. Just don't worry too much.
